Service jobs and parts
Pump oil level check
Pump · every 10 hours
Amazone's maintenance table lists the pump oil level for each day and after the first load. Froth or cloudy oil means a split pump diaphragm.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pump oil | 1 | 20W-30 branded oil or 15W-40 multigrade. Never too low or too high | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- With the pump stopped and level, check the oil is visible at the mark on the pump.
- On the hitch drawbar the pump sits at a slight angle, so take the reading as an average.
- If the oil is not at the mark, take off the cap and top up with 20W-30 branded oil or 15W-40 multigrade.
- Foam or cloudy oil means a damaged diaphragm: stop and have it checked.
Tools: Funnel, Rags
Daily checks and clean-down
General · every 10 hours
Amazone's daily list covers the whole machine for obvious faults, the oil filter dirt indicator on hydraulic fold, the spray pump, the spray tank, the nozzle line filters, the nozzles and draining the air reservoir. Clean the pump by pumping clear water for a few minutes after each use.
Step-by-step
- Look over the machine for obvious faults and leaks.
- Check the hydraulic oil filter indicator (hydraulic fold) and replace the element if needed.
- Pump clear water around for a few minutes after use, and rinse the tank and filters.
- Check the nozzles, drain the air reservoir, and check the tyre pressures weekly or every 50 hours.
Tools: Hose, Gloves
Grease to the lubrication chart
Lubrication · every 50 hours
Amazone's chart gives the drawbar bearings and drawbar eye at 50 hours, and the support leg ram, parking brake cable and pulleys at 100 hours. Other points (suspension rams, lift rams, driveshaft, axle) have intervals printed on the chart that I could not read cleanly, so check your handbook's chart. Grease again after pressure washing.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grease | 1 | EP2 grease. Lithium soap multipurpose EP grease (Aralub HL 2, Marson L2, Beacon 2 or Retinax A; Aralub HLP 2, Marson EPL-2, Beacon EP 2 or Retinax AM in hard use). Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Wipe the nipples and gun clean first so dirt is not pushed in. Push out the dirty old grease and replace it.
- Grease the drawbar bearings (2 points) and drawbar eye every 50 hours.
- Grease the support leg cylinder (2 points) and the parking brake cable, pulleys and spindle every 100 hours.
- Grease the other nipples to the chart on the machine. No grease or oil must get into the brake.
- In winter grease the driveshaft guard tubes so they do not freeze solid, and the driveshaft joints.
Tools: Grease gun, Rags
Brake system and wheel hub checks
Brakes · every 200 hours or every 3 months
Amazone's quarterly or 200 hour list covers the brake system (leak test, reservoir and cylinder pressure, joints, adjustment, linings, ALB regulator), the parking brake cable, and the wheel hub bearing play. Brake work is for trained staff.
Step-by-step
- Check the brake lines, hoses and coupling heads for damage and corrosion, and the joints are secure and free.
- Test for leaks, check air reservoir pressure and brake cylinder pressure, and check the lining wear and brake settings.
- Check the parking brake holds when applied.
- Check the wheel hub bearing play and tighten the wheel nuts to 510 N·m. Leave brake adjustments to a trained workshop.
Tools: Torque wrench
Line filters, pump belt and boom check
Spray system · every 200 hours or every 3 months
Amazone's 200 hour list includes cleaning the nozzle line filters and replacing damaged inserts, checking the pump belt tension on drawbar machines, and checking the boom for cracks.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Line filter insert | 1 | Replace if damaged. Check your handbook for sizes and numbers | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Clean the line filters in the nozzle lines and replace any damaged filter insert.
- On drawbar-type pump drives press the belt with a 75 N test force: the deflection must not exceed 14 mm at 540 rpm drive or 16 mm at 1,000 rpm. If it does, move the pulley in its slots to tighten.
- Check the boom for cracks and the folding hinges for wear.
Tools: Soft brush, Tension gauge
Spray pump oil change
Pump · every 1,000 hours or every year
Amazone's maintenance table puts the pump oil change at one year or 1,000 hours, and says change it before winter. The pump has no filter. Check the level again after a few hours.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pump oil | 1 | 20W-30 branded oil or 15W-40 multigrade. Quantity: check your handbook | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Take the pump off, take off the filler cap and turn the pump upside down.
- Turn the drive shaft by hand until all the old oil has run out. You can also use the drain screw, but some oil stays in the pump.
- Stand the pump on a flat surface and turn the shaft left and right while slowly filling with new oil. It is full when the oil shows at the mark.
- Check the level again after a few hours of work. Dispose of old oil properly.
Tools: Drain tray, Funnel, Rags
Pump valves and diaphragms
Pump · every 1,000 hours or every year
Amazone says check the pump valves and the piston diaphragms at least once a year; replace all diaphragms together even if only one is damaged. It is workshop work.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Piston diaphragms | 6 | Replace all together. No Amazone number in the manual: get it from your dealer with the pump type | check your handbook |
| Valve O-rings | 1 | Fit new on reassembly. Get the numbers from your dealer | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Do one piston at a time and finish it before starting the next. Swing the piston up so the pump oil does not run out.
- Look at the valve seat, valve, spring and guide for damage and wear. Replace damaged parts and fit new O-rings.
- Tighten the valve nuts crosswise to 25 N·m (BP 160-185 pump) or 20 N·m (AR 250-280 pump); check your handbook for the AR 185.
- Check every diaphragm and replace all of them if any is swollen, split or porous.
Tools: Torque wrench, Spanners
Nozzle check and flow meter calibration
Spray system · every 1,000 hours or every year
Amazone's yearly list says calibrate the flow and return meter, measure the output (litre check) and test the cross-distribution of the sprayer, and replace worn nozzles.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spray nozzles | 1 | Replace worn nozzles; check your handbook for the type | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Calibrate the flow meter and set the return flow meter as the handbook describes.
- Check the output of each nozzle against the table and replace those that are worn.
- Check the pump output and pressure.
- Check the spray pattern across the boom.
Tools: Measuring jug, Stopwatch, Pressure gauge
Winter lay-up
Storage · every year
Amazone's overwintering list: clean thoroughly, drain all lines, remove a diaphragm valve from one nozzle body per boom section, take the filters out, grease the shaft joints and tubes, change the pump oil, drain the hoses on the induction bowl and injector, and empty the rinse water tank.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pump oil | 1 | 20W-30 or 15W-40. Quantity: check your handbook | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Clean the machine thoroughly while the tank is empty and drain the last of the liquid.
- Run the pumps slowly and pump air until no liquid comes from the nozzles.
- Open the drain tap on the suction side and the distribution valve on the pressure side, move the valves through all positions and close them again.
- Remove one diaphragm valve from a nozzle body in each boom section so the nozzle lines empty.
- Take out and clean the suction and pressure filters.
- Take off the pump pressure hose so the water drains away, and run the pump for about half a minute until nothing comes out.
- Cover the pump pressure connection, grease the driveshaft joints and the guard tubes, and change the pump oil.
- Drain the hoses on the induction bowl and the injector, and empty the rinse water tank by loosening the union nut.

Known problems
Frost damage to the pump
Ice can destroy the pump pistons and diaphragms. Drain the pump and lines completely before frost.
Foam or milky pump oil
Means a damaged diaphragm: stop before chemical gets into the oil.
Pump over-speed
Never run the pump faster than 540 rpm.
Brake grease
Do not allow oil or grease into the brake drums.
German manual
The only edition I could read is the German one; English wording here is my own translation. Check the English edition (MG3403) for the pump oil quantity.
