Spreading vane and swivel blade check

Discs · every 10 hours

Amazone: check the spreading vanes daily and replace vanes or swivel blades as soon as holes are worn in them. Worn vanes ruin the spread pattern and can break up and be thrown out.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the tractor and take the key out. Wait for the discs to stop.
  2. Look for holes worn through the vanes and swivel blades.
  3. To change a vane: take out the fixing bolt and the quick-release bolt, fit the new vane with the open side of the U facing the direction of turn, and put KA059 paste on the threads.
  4. Fit the fixing bolt with a washer and a new self-locking nut, tight enough that the vane can still just be swung by hand.
  5. Fit the quick-release bolt, disc spring (open side towards the disc) and wing nut. Swing the vane to the setting for your width and tighten the wing nut by hand only.

Agitator check

Hopper · every 50 hours

Amazone: every week or 50 hours, check with the guard screen closed that the spring cotter pin is in the agitator. The agitator shaft is protected by safety splints.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the tractor and take the key out. Never reach into the hopper with the drive connected.
  2. With the guard screen closed, check the spring cotter pin is in place in each agitator.
  3. Fit replacement safety splints only as the manual shows.

Tools: Torch

Friction clutch ventilation

PTO shaft · every 200 hours or every 6 months

Amazone: 'ventilate' the PTO friction clutch every 6 months or 200 hours, before first use and after long storage. Rust and damp lock the friction faces.

Step-by-step
  1. Take the friction clutch off the gearbox input shaft.
  2. Undo the nuts to relieve the springs.
  3. Turn the clutch by hand to break any rust between the faces.
  4. Tighten the nuts until the springs are 26.5 mm long, then refit the clutch.

Spread rate check (calibration)

Calibration · every year

Amazone recommends a spread rate check every time the fertiliser changes. It is done on the left side with both discs off, by travelling a measured distance or with the tractor standing.

Step-by-step
  1. Put about 200 kg in the hopper and set the left slider to the expected position.
  2. Take off both spreading discs (wing nut) and screw the thumb screw back into the shaft. Hook the collection bucket under the left outlet.
  3. Travelled test: mark the calibration distance for your width from the manual's table, drive it at working speed with the PTO on, open the left slider at the start and close it at the end.
  4. Standing test: run the PTO and open the slider for the time the table gives for your speed.
  5. Weigh what was collected and multiply by the factor in the table to get kg/ha. Adjust the slider and repeat.
  6. For high rates, halve the distance and double the multiplier. Refit both discs.

Tools: Collection bucket and brackets (supplied), Scales, Tape measure, Stopwatch

Lateral distribution check (tray test)

Calibration · every year

The mobile test rig (collection trays and measuring cup) or the EasyCheck mats check the spread across the bout. Use it when the setting chart does not cover your fertiliser.

Step-by-step
  1. Lay the trays or mats out in the field at the positions the test rig instructions give.
  2. Spread over them by driving back and forth on the tramlines.
  3. Tip each tray into the measuring cup (or photograph the EasyCheck mats in the mySpreader app) and read the result.
  4. Change the vane positions as advised and repeat.

Tools: Amazone mobile test rig or EasyCheck mats

Slider basic setting check

Calibration · every year

If both hopper outlets empty unevenly at the same slider setting, check the slider basic setting: position 8 with a 12 mm pin.

Step-by-step
  1. Open the slide gate hydraulically and open the dosing slider with the setting lever. Never put fingers in the outlet.
  2. Put a 12 mm pin in the opening and swing the lever until it stops on the pin. Lock it with the rotary handle.
  3. Slacken the pointer screw, set the pointer to 8 and tighten it. Take out the pin.
  4. Do both sides.

Tools: 12 mm pin (shank of a 12 mm drill), Spanner

Cleaning and storage

General · every year

Fertiliser is very corrosive. Amazone: wash the spreader, remove deposits from discs and vanes, coat it with anti-rust compound when dry and store it with the sliders open.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Biodegradable anti-rust compound1check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Wash with plain water, paying attention to the outlets and sliders. Keep the jet 300 mm away, under 120 bar, and off bearings, decals and electrics.
  2. Clean fertiliser off the spreading discs and vanes.
  3. When dry, coat with a biodegradable anti-rust compound and grease the machine.
  4. Store with the sliders open.
  5. Gearboxes: they are maintenance-free. Only if there is fresh oil on the floor or a noisy gearbox, find the leak and top up (input 0.4 L, angle boxes 0.15 L each, SAE 90).

Tools: Pressure washer (max 120 bar), Grease gun
