Battioni says change the gearbox oil first after about 100 working hours and then about every 300 hours, with new ISO VG 460 mineral oil. The oil should always show at the level plug.

Step-by-step

Disconnect the PTO, stop the tractor and take the key out.
Drain the gearbox, refit the drain plug and fill through the top plug until oil shows at the side level plug.
Make the first change at about 100 hours, then every 300 hours.
Use only new, clean oil.

Clean and check the valves

Valves · every month

Battioni says clean and service the valves at least once a month, and regularly check that the overflow valves and the pressure/vacuum valves still work. Clean them with water or a non-corrosive detergent.

Step-by-step

Turn the pump off and disconnect the PTO.
Take out and clean the overflow (shut-off) valve and the pressure and vacuum relief valves with water or a non-corrosive detergent.
Check each valve moves freely and seats properly. Replace any that stick.
Also empty and clean the tanker's overflow trap or float chamber if fitted (see the tanker maker's handbook).

Vane wear check and replacement

Vanes · every year

Battioni says replace the vanes when their width is down to 90% of new, checked through the inspection plug against the reference ring on the rotor. Replace the whole set, with new seals and gaskets from the overhaul kit. Battioni gives no fixed check interval, so check at least yearly. Overheating, lack of oil, slurry getting into the pump or rust from standing all shorten vane life.

Step-by-step

Turn the pump off and disconnect the PTO.
Remove the threaded inspection plug and turn the rotor until a vane lines up with the hole.
Compare the vane with the reference ring on the rotor. If it is below the ring (about 90% of new width), replace the whole set.
When fitting new vanes, check spare vanes are no longer than the nominal size, coat them with oil, and make sure each slides freely in its slot. Fit new seals and gaskets.
Pour a little oil into the inlet and run slowly until oil shows at the drip.

Wash the oil tank and flush the pump

Pump lubrication · every year

Battioni says wash the oil tank at least once a year with solvents, after removing the manifold. If slurry has got into the pump, flush it by sucking in diesel or fuel oil and then oil. Never use water, as it causes rust.

Step-by-step

Turn the pump off and disconnect the PTO.
Remove the manifold and wash out the oil tank with solvent once a year.
If slurry has entered the pump, run it with the suction open and draw in diesel or fuel oil, then oil, to flush it.
Do not wash the inside with water. Before laying up, run some oil through so the vanes and body do not rust.

Vane lubrication oil: fill and set the drip

Pump lubrication · when needed

The MEC pump burns its lubricating oil, so there is no oil change. Battioni says always check the pump has oil before starting and use only new vacuum pump oil. The drip rate is set at the factory; on the MEC 8000 it is 40–50 drops a minute at full vacuum.

Step-by-step

Stop the tractor and take the key out before opening the oil tank.
Top the tank up with new vacuum pump oil (or new ISO VG 100 mineral oil). Never use gear, hydraulic, transmission or used oil.
Run the pump and count the drips in the sight. MEC 6500/8000: 40–50 drops a minute at full vacuum, 20–25 at free air.
To adjust automatic lubrication: remove the pin cover, loosen the lock nut and turn the pin. Clockwise gives less oil, anticlockwise more. Retighten the nut and refit the cover.

Known problems

Slurry in the pump

The tanker's overflow valve and trap must work. Slurry drawn into the pump strips the oil and breaks vanes.

Overheating

Never run near 130 °C or keep the pump at high vacuum for long: 6–8 minutes at −0.8 bar with standard vanes.

Repair guides

Vane (blade) inspection and replacement (Hard, 3–5 hours): Tanker slow to fill or empty, weak vacuum or pressure, more noise than usual, or a knocking from inside the pump body.
Vacuum pump overheating (Moderate, 1 hour to check; longer if vanes must be changed): Pump body too hot to touch, paint discoloured, smell of hot oil, loss of vacuum as it heats up, or vanes that have seized or broken.
Little or no vacuum or pressure (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Tanker takes far longer to fill, will not lift slurry, will not discharge under pressure, or the vacuum gauge stays low with the pump running.
Oil not dripping, smoke from the exhaust or using too much oil (Moderate, 1–2 hours): No oil dripping in the sight, the oil tank not going down, smoke from the discharge elbow, oil mist everywhere, or the tank emptying much faster than usual.
Slurry in the pump: flushing and valve cleaning (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Slurry coming out of the discharge elbow, the tank overfilled, vacuum dropping off after a fill, or the overflow or relief valves sticking.
