Service jobs and parts

Greasing loader pivots (every 10 hours)

Chassis · every 10 hours

Bobcat names the grease points for the 763: lift arm pivots, lift links, lift and tilt cylinders, and the Bob-Tach pivots and wedges, every 10 hours, with multipurpose lithium-based grease. Every 250 hours it also lists the steering lever pivots (if fitted), and every 100 hours the engine-to-pump drive coupler (if fitted).

Step-by-step
  1. Park level, lower the arms with the bucket flat on the ground, stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Wipe each nipple clean before greasing.
  3. Grease the lift arm pivots, lift links, both ends of the lift and tilt cylinders, and the Bob-Tach pivots and wedges until fresh grease shows.
  4. Every 250 hours also grease the steering lever pivots, and every 100 hours the drive coupler if your machine has a nipple there.
  5. Wipe off the surplus grease.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 250 hours or every year

Bobcat's 763/763H service manual schedule says the first oil and filter change must be at 50 hours, then every 250 hours or 12 months, using CD-or-better oil and a Bobcat filter.

Step-by-step
  1. Park on firm level ground, lower the lift arms with the bucket flat on the ground, stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Let the engine cool until it is warm, not hot. Wear gloves: hot oil burns.
  3. Open the rear door, remove the sump plug and drain the oil into the tray.
  4. Unscrew the old filter and make sure its seal comes off with it.
  5. Oil the new filter seal and screw the filter on by hand only.
  6. Refit the sump plug and fill with oil to the full mark. Do not overfill.
  7. Start the engine, check for leaks, stop it, wait a few minutes and recheck the dipstick.

Tools: Drain tray (10 L), Filter wrench, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel, Gloves, Rags

Fuel filter change

Fuel · every 250 hours or every year

Bobcat lists replacing the fuel filter every 250 hours (or every 12 months, per the 763/763H service manual), and draining trapped water from it every 10 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Park level, lower the lift arms to the ground, stop the engine and take the key out. No smoking or naked flames.
  2. Clean around the filter head so no dirt gets in.
  3. Drain the filter into a container, then unscrew it.
  4. Fill the new filter with clean diesel if your handbook says to, oil its seal and fit it by hand.
  5. Bleed air from the fuel system as your handbook shows, then start the engine and check for leaks.

Hydraulic / hydrostatic filter and reservoir breather cap

Hydraulics · every 500 hours or every year

Bobcat lists replacing the hydraulic/hydrostatic filter and the reservoir breather cap every 500 hours or 12 months (the 763/763H service manual puts the filter itself at 1,000 hours, with the fluid, and the breather cap at 500 hours; we keep the shorter figure). This is more often than the fluid change (1,000 hours), so it is a separate filter task. Change the filter sooner if the transmission warning light stays on for more than 5 minutes once the fluid is warm.

Step-by-step
  1. Park on firm level ground, lower the lift arms with the bucket flat on the ground, stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. With the engine off, move the lift, tilt and auxiliary controls a few times to let out trapped pressure. Oil under pressure can pierce skin.
  3. Clean around the filter, unscrew it and catch the oil.
  4. Oil the new filter seal and fit it by hand.
  5. Change the reservoir breather cap.
  6. Start the engine, check for leaks, lower the arms and top up the reservoir to the mark.

Tools: Filter wrench, Drain tray, Lint-free rags, Gloves

Hydraulic fluid, filter and case drain filters change

Hydraulics · every 1,000 hours or every year

Bobcat lists replacing the hydraulic reservoir fluid and the drive motor case drain filters (if fitted) every 1,000 hours or 12 months, with the case drain filters also done at 50 hours on a new machine. The main hydraulic filter is changed with the fluid as well. A blocked case drain filter can blow the drive motor shaft seal (see known problems).

  2. With the engine off, move the lift, tilt and auxiliary controls to let out trapped pressure.
  3. Drain the reservoir into a container. Wear gloves; warm oil can scald.
  4. Change the main filter and the case drain filter elements (the small canisters in the lines from each drive motor back to the tank).
  5. Refit the drain plug and fill with Bobcat Hydraulic/Hydrostatic Fluid to the mark. Do not mix in other fluids.
  6. Start the engine, work the lift and tilt slowly through their travel, lower the arms, stop and top up the reservoir.

Tools: Container for at least 35 L, Spanners, Filter wrench, Funnel or pump, Gloves

Chaincase (final drive) oil change

Final drive · every 1,000 hours or every year

The drive chains run in oil in the chaincase under the cab. Bobcat lists checking the level every 50 hours and replacing the oil every 1,000 hours or 12 months (763/763H service manual).

PartQtyNotesPart number
Chaincase oil1≈34 L (36 US qt). Type: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Take the bucket or attachment off first so there is no weight on the arms.
  2. If you need the arms up for access, raise them and fit the lift arm support device before you go near them: Bobcat says never work under raised arms without it. Then stop the engine and take the key out.
  3. Place a large tray under the chaincase. The level plug is at the front of the machine.
  4. Remove the drain plug and let the oil drain fully. If more oil comes out than the chaincase should hold, suspect a leaking drive motor seal.
  5. Refit the drain plug and fill through the filler until oil reaches the level plug.
  6. Refit the plugs, remove the support device, lower the arms and check for leaks.

Tools: Large drain tray (40 L), Spanners, Pump or funnel, Gloves, Jack stands

Engine air filter elements (when the indicator shows)

Engine · when needed

Bobcat says check the air filter condition indicator every 10 hours and service the filter only when the indicator shows it is needed. It also says do not clean the elements with compressed air.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Outer (primary) air filter1Genuine Bobcat; Bobcat's parts shop lists the 763. Supersedes 6655888 and 886525B. Fit can vary by serial number and engine, so check with your dealer6598492
Inner (safety) air filter1Genuine Bobcat; Bobcat's parts shop lists the 763. Supersedes Donaldson P123160. Check your serial with the dealer6598362
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine with the filter out.
  2. Open the air cleaner and take out the outer element. Do not blow it out with compressed air: Bobcat says this damages it.
  3. Wipe the inside of the housing with a damp cloth.
  4. Fit the new element, check the seal sits evenly and close the housing. Change the inner element if your handbook calls for it.
  5. Reset the condition indicator if it has a reset button.

Known problems

Hydraulic oil vanishing into the chaincase

A worn drive motor shaft seal lets hydraulic oil leak into the chaincase, so the tank drops with no oil on the floor. Check by removing the chaincase level plug: if extra oil pours out, the seal is leaking. The motor may need replacing, not just the seal.

Blocked case drain filters

A clogged or restricted case drain filter on the line from each drive motor back to the tank is the usual cause of that shaft seal failing. Clean or change both filters whenever you change a seal.

Transmission warning light

If the transmission warning light stays on for more than 5 minutes once the hydraulic fluid is warm, Bobcat says change the hydraulic/hydrostatic filter early.

Never work under unsupported arms

Bobcat says never work on the machine with the lift arms up unless they are held by the approved lift arm support device. Take the attachment off first.
