Service jobs and parts

First retighten of nuts and bolts

General · every 8 hours

Bogballe: a new spreader beds in, so retighten every nut and bolt after the first 5–8 hours. The central and angle gear bolts are Loctited and are left alone.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Copper grease1For stainless threadscheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Retighten all nuts and bolts except the central and angle gear bolts.
  2. Stainless nuts and bolts can gall: put cutting lubricant or copper grease on the threads when refitting.

Tools: Spanners and sockets

Daily greasing and oiling

General · every 10 hours

Bogballe's daily list: grease the PTO joints and telescope tubes, and oil the shutter, adjustment axle, setting handle and connecting rods. Grease the agitators very sparingly, about one pump a season: too much pressure stops them turning.

Grease and oil1check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the tractor and take the key out.
  2. Grease the PTO cardan joints and lock (A) and the telescope tubes (B).
  3. Agitators (C, under the cone): one pump a season only. If one is stiff from too much grease, take the nipple out to release the pressure.
  4. Oil the setting and closing shutters (D), the adjustment axle (E), the setting handle (F) and the connecting rods (G).

Tools: Grease gun, Oil can

Friction clutch clean

PTO shaft · every year

The friction clutch protects the Trend gearbox. It must slip 1–2 turns when the PTO starts. Bogballe: separate and clean it if the spreader has stood for more than 6 months, and at least once a year.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Clutch plates2If worn; check your handbook or KRMcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Undo the 6 clutch bolts and separate the clutch.
  2. Clean the rust off all slip faces with a wire brush. Never oil or grease them. Replace the plates if needed.
  3. Refit the bolts and tighten them to 60 Nm. The splined shaft should slip at 180–220 Nm.
  4. Always start the PTO slowly.

Tools: Torque wrench (60 Nm), Wire brush

Spreading vane check

Discs · every year

The vanes are MN12 manganese steel but still wear with abrasive fertiliser. Bogballe: if holes are worn in a vane, change it at once.

Step-by-step
  1. Check the vanes are intact, correctly set and tight before each use.
  2. Change any vane with a hole worn in it.
  3. Clean dust off the vane and disc contact faces before fitting and tightening.

Tools: Spanners

Quadro calibration (flow check)

Calibration · every year

Bogballe advises a new calibration with each fertiliser delivery, as damp and temperature change the flow. If the hopper is damp inside, do at least three and use the last.

Step-by-step
  1. Fix the scale stop at 4.5.
  2. Run the PTO at 200–250 rpm. The flow is constant from 200 to 540 rpm.
  3. Open the outlet for exactly 30 seconds and weigh what comes out.
  4. Work out the flow factor with the formula in the handbook from your kg/ha, width and speed.
  5. Find the nearest flow factor in the list and read off the scale setting, or set the flow factor directly.

Tools: Quadro calibration kit, Scales, Stopwatch

Tray test for spread width

Calibration · every year

Bogballe suggests a tray test when your fertiliser is not in the spread chart or its quality is in doubt. Trays catch only some grains, so expect 10–15% scatter: look for a trend.

Step-by-step
  1. Lay the trays level in a line across the direction of travel. Spacing goes up 0.5 m for every 3 m of width: 12 m 1.5 m; 18 m 2.5 m; 24 m 3.5 m; 30 m 4.5 m; 36 m 5.5 m; 42 m 6.5 m.
  2. Start spreading at least 10 m before the trays and stop at least 35 m after them. Spread on 3 tramlines.
  3. Tip each tray into its tube and compare.
  4. Too little between tramlines: increase the tilt angle by 2°. Too much: decrease it by 2°. Repeat.
  5. Check the PTO speed, tramline spacing, vanes and height over the crop as well.

Tools: Bogballe test trays and measuring tubes, Spirit level, Tape measure

Cleaning and corrosion protection

General · every year

Bogballe: clean the spreader thoroughly after every use. Fertiliser salts can start rust in hours where paint is damaged.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Anti-corrosion oil1check your handbook
Tectyl or similar1For paint damagecheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Wash with water, with soap if needed. Use low pressure only and keep off the gearbox shaft seals.
  2. If you used a degreaser, oil the spreader with anti-corrosion oil as soon as it is dry.
  3. Grease and oil the whole spreader.
  4. Clean and paint any damage, or treat it with Tectyl.
  5. Check the shutters close to 0.5 mm from the hopper bottom; reset them if fertiliser leaks when shut.

Tools: Hose, Low-pressure washer

Known problems

PTO shaft length

With less than 50 mm overlap, or too long, the shaft damages the gearbox input splines. Bogballe does not cover this under warranty.
