Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 3,000 km or every year

BRP's regular-duty schedule says replace the engine oil and filter every year, 100 hours or 3,000 km (2,000 mi). For severe duty or deep mud and water, do it every 6 months, 50 hours or 1,500 km. BRP says the oil and filter must be changed together.

Filter cover O-ring1Genuine BRP O-ring for Outlander 650 EFI 2019 (per Partzilla fiche); other years may differ420230920
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, warm the engine to normal temperature and stop it. Take care: the oil can be very hot.
  2. Remove the dipstick, clean round the drain plug (reached through the frame), put the tray under and unscrew the magnetic drain plug. Throw the gasket ring away.
  3. Let the oil run out of the engine and filter. Clean the magnetic plug; metal debris points to engine damage.
  4. Fit a new gasket ring and tighten the drain plug: M12 plug 20 N·m, M18 plug 30 N·m.
  5. Remove the oil filter cover and filter. Clean the inlet and outlet bores, fit a new O-ring to the cover, oil the O-ring, grease the end of the new filter and fit it in the cover.
  6. Refit the cover without pinching the O-ring and tighten the screws to 10 N·m.
  7. Fill with about 2.0 L of the right oil, idle for a few minutes, check for leaks, stop and let it settle, then check the level and top up.

Known problems

Mud and water

BRP gives a separate deep mud and water schedule, with the oil, filter and air filter done every 6 months, 50 hours or 1,500 km. Farm quads used in wet yards should follow it.

Old and new

This entry follows the 2023 guide for the G2 chassis. The first-generation Outlander 650/800 (G1, to 2012) has different service data: use its own handbook.

Repair guides

The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your quad.
