Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 200 hours or every year

BRP's schedule says replace the engine oil and filter every year or 3,000 km or 200 hours in trail use, and every year or 1,500 km or 100 hours in severe (dusty, muddy or heavy-load) use, whichever comes first.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Engine oil15W-40. BRP XPS 4-stroke synthetic oil (293 600 112), or 5W-40 API SJ/SL/SM/SN. 2 L with filter as printed in the guide293600112
Oil filter (paper cartridge)1Genuine BRP Rotax filter. This number is listed in a dealer catalogue for the Defender HD10 (same 976 cc engine); the 2018 Traxter page could not be read, so confirm it with your dealer420256188
Filter cover O-ring1Genuine BRP O-ring for Traxter HD10 2018 (per Partzilla fiche); HD8 and other years not checked420230923
Drain plug gasket ring1The guide says never reuse it: check your handbook or dealer for the numbercheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground with the engine warm, not hot. Open the cargo box and take out the dipstick. Remove the passenger seats and engine service cover if you need room.
  2. Put the drain pan under the engine drain plug, clean around it, undo the plug and throw away the gasket ring. Let the oil drain completely. Clean any metal from the magnetic plug: debris is a sign of internal damage.
  3. Refit the plug with a new gasket ring and tighten to 30 N·m.
  4. Clean around the filter cover, undo the three cover screws and take off the cover and filter. Fit a new O-ring, put the new filter in the cover and lightly oil the O-ring and filter seal.
  5. Refit the cover and tighten the three screws to 10 N·m.
  6. Fill with the recommended oil, check on the dipstick (engine cold, dipstick screwed in fully, then pulled out) and top up to the upper mark. Do not overfill. Run, check for leaks and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain pan (4 L), Socket set, Torque wrench (10–30 N·m), Funnel, Shop towels, Gloves

Air filter inspect, clean or replace

Engine · every 200 hours or every year

BRP's schedule says inspect and clean the engine air filter at the same 200 h (100 h severe) interval and replace it if needed. In dry sand, dry dirt or gravel conditions, do it more often. Riding in a group makes it worse.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Engine air filter1Genuine BRP number listed for Traxter HD5/HD8/HD10 2017 to 2019 and Defender HD10 (parts-site cross-reference)715900394
Step-by-step
  1. Open the cargo box, unlatch the air filter cover on the right-hand side and take the filter out. It fits tightly on the outlet tube: rock it gently, then twist and pull straight out.
  2. Look for dust streaks on the clean side: they mean a leak. Find and cure the leak before fitting a new filter.
  3. Tap heavy dust out of the paper element. Replace it if it is damaged, oily or will not come clean.
  4. Refit the filter, check the duck-bill valve in the cover and latch the cover.

Tools: Soft brush, Clean rag

Valve clearance adjustment

Engine · every 200 hours or every year

BRP's schedule lists adjust valve clearance at the same 200 h (100 h severe) interval. Clearances are inlet 0.06–0.14 mm and exhaust 0.11–0.19 mm. It needs the service manual and tools, so most owners leave it to a dealer.

PartQtyNotesPart number

  2. Follow the BRP service manual to remove the covers and turn the engine to the right position.
  3. Check against 0.06–0.14 mm (inlet) and 0.11–0.19 mm (exhaust) and adjust as the service manual describes.
  4. If you do not have the manual and tools, have your dealer do it.

Tools: Feeler gauges, Service manual

CVT belt and drive pulley inspection

Transmission · every 200 hours or every year

BRP's schedule says inspect the CVT drive belt and clean the pulleys, inspect the centrifugal levers and rollers of the drive pulley and the hub needle bearing, at the 200 h (100 h severe) interval. Keeping the CVT air filter clean also lengthens CVT life.

Step-by-step
  1. Never touch the CVT with the engine running and never drive with the CVT cover off.
  2. Take off the cover, look at the belt for cracks, glazing, missing teeth and fraying, and clean dust from the pulleys.

Steering, wheel bearings, CV joints and driveline inspection

Chassis · every 200 hours or every year

BRP's schedule lists these checks at the 200 h (100 h severe) interval: steering for play, tie-rod ends and ball joints and boots, wheel bearings, suspension arm bushes and wear plates, CV joints and boots, propeller shaft U-joints, brake pads, discs, lines and calipers, battery connections, and cage and seat belt fasteners.

Step-by-step
  1. Lift each wheel in turn and check for play in the steering, ball joints, tie-rod ends and wheel bearings.
  2. Look at every CV and tie-rod boot for cuts and grease leaks.
  3. Check the propeller shaft U-joints for play.
  4. Check brake pad thickness (minimum 0.5 mm), disc condition, lines and calipers.
  5. Tighten the cage fasteners and check seat belt retractors and buckles.

Known problems

Service reminder on the gauge

The multifunction gauge shows MAINTENANCE REQUIRED after every 200 hours and the message has to be reset.

Oil capacity looks low

The 2018 guide's specification table gives 2 L with filter. Always set the final level on the dipstick and check your own handbook.

Air filter in dust

BRP says to service the air filter more often when riding on dry sand, dry dirt or gravel. In a group it is worse.
