Engine oil and filter change
Engine · when needed
Clean oil protects the bearings and turbo. No source we could read gave the JX90 oil change interval, so check your handbook (the service manual says use AKCELA No.1, API CH-4). The filter is changed every time.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 1 | AKCELA No.1 Engine Oil, API CH-4 / ACEA E5, ≈11.2 L with filter. Aztec Oils match: EMPROTEC SHPD 10W-30 | check your handbook |
| Oil filter (spin-on) | 1 | Agriline lists 47128196 (crosses to 1909102, 925229C91, Fleetguard LF682) for the JX90; Tier 1 and 2 engines | 47128196 |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, lower any implement to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Run the engine for a few minutes to warm the oil, then stop it and wait a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
- Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully. Refit the plug with a sound washer.
- Clean around the filter head, unscrew the old filter and check its seal has come off with it.
- Smear clean oil on the new filter's seal, screw it on by hand until it touches, then tighten by hand as the filter says. Do not use the wrench to tighten it.
- Fill with new oil to the top mark on the dipstick (about 11.2 L).
- Start the engine, check for leaks around the filter and plug, stop it, wait a few minutes and recheck the dipstick.
Tools: Drain tray (15 L), Socket for sump plug, Filter strap wrench, Funnel, Rags, Gloves
Fuel filter cartridge change
Fuel · when needed
The rotary injection pump is easily damaged by dirt and water. The service manual says the system has a mesh filter in the lift pump and a replaceable cartridge before the injection pump; for the interval, check your handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel filter cartridge | 1 | Agriline lists 84217953 (also 1931163, 1930581) for JX Tier 2 and Tier 3 engines; it also lists 1931128 for JX tractors, so give the dealer your serial number | 84217953 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine, take the key out, chock the wheels and keep naked flames well away.
- Clean the outside of the filter head before you start.
- Unscrew the old cartridge and catch the fuel in a container.
- Wet the new cartridge's seal with clean diesel and screw it on by hand.
- Bleed the air out of the system as your handbook shows before starting.
- Do not crank the starter for more than 30 seconds at a time; let it cool between tries.
Tools: Filter wrench, Container for fuel, Rags, Spanners for bleed screw
Air cleaner elements
Engine · when needed
The JX90 has a dual dry-element air cleaner with a blocked-filter warning, a pre-cleaner and an automatic dust valve (service manual). Dust past the filter wears the engine fast. Service it when the warning shows; for the change interval, check your handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outer air filter element | 1 | Round-element air cleaner (Agriline kit 1930588; the kit page also prints 47135972). Tractors with the panel-type cleaner take outer 87037984 | 47135976 |
| Inner (safety) element | 1 | Round-element air cleaner, 316 mm long. Panel-type cleaner: inner 87037985 | 1930588 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine with the element out.
- Undo the housing cover and take out the outer element carefully so dust does not fall inside.
- Wipe the inside of the housing with a clean damp rag. Leave the inner element in place unless you are changing it.
- Check the rubber dust valve at the bottom of the housing is soft and not blocked.
- Fit the new element and the cover, and check the cover seals all round.
Tools: Torch, Clean rag, Dust mask
Transmission and hydraulic oil and filter change
Transmission · when needed
The gearbox, rear axle, lift and PTO share one oil (about 46 L). Dirty or milky oil wears the pump and gears. No source gave the interval, so check your handbook. The hydraulic filter is changed with every oil change.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transmission/hydraulic oil | 1 | ISO VG 32 or 10W-30. AKCELA Nexplore, ≈46 L. Aztec Oils match: AGRITEC UTTO | check your handbook |
| Hydraulic oil filter (spin-on) | 1 | Agriline lists it for the JX90 (also 84160465, 47425202) | 1931127 |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, lower the linkage and any implement fully to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Move the spool valve levers back and forth with the engine off to release any trapped hydraulic pressure.
- Let hot oil cool for a while first; it can burn. Then take out the drain plugs and let the oil drain fully.
- Clean and refit the drain plugs.
- Unscrew the hydraulic filter, oil the new filter's seal and screw it on by hand.
- Fill with AKCELA Nexplore to the correct mark on the dipstick or sight glass.
- Run the engine, raise and lower the linkage a few times, lower it again, stop the engine and recheck the level. Check the filter for leaks.
Tools: Large drain tray (50 L), Spanners for drain plugs, Filter wrench, Pump or large funnel
Rear final drive oil change
Transmission · when needed
The service manual lists a separate oil fill for each rear final drive (about 5.3 L each). For the interval and plug positions, check your handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final drive oil | 2 | UTTO tractor transmission oil. AKCELA Nexplore, ≈5.3 L each side | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Let the oil cool if the tractor has been working.
- Drain each final drive through its plug and refit the plugs.
- Fill each side with about 5.3 L to the level plug, then refit the level plug.
Tools: Drain tray, Spanners for plugs, Funnel or oil pump
Front axle and front final drive oil change (4WD)
Front axle · when needed
The 4WD front axle housing holds about 7.0 L and each front final drive about 1.25 L (service manual). For the interval, check your handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front axle oil | 1 | UTTO tractor transmission oil. AKCELA Nexplore, ≈7.0 L housing plus ≈1.25 L each final drive | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Drain the axle housing and both final drives. Turn the wheels so the hub plugs are at the bottom to drain, and at the level mark to fill.
- Refit the drain plugs and fill each part to its level plug.
- Refit all plugs and check for leaks after a short drive.
Tools: Drain tray, Spanners for plugs, Oil pump
Coolant drain and refill
Cooling · when needed
Antifreeze protects against frost and corrosion but wears out. The system holds about 14 L (16 L with cab) of 50/50 water and AKCELA Premium antifreeze. For the change interval, check your handbook, and test the strength each autumn.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Antifreeze and water | 1 | 50/50 AKCELA Premium antifreeze, ≈14 L (≈16 L with cab) | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Only work on a cold engine. Loosen the radiator cap very slowly to let pressure out before taking it off; hot coolant scalds.
- Open the drain taps and drain into a tray. Coolant is poisonous to animals, so dispose of it properly.
- Close the taps and fill with the 50/50 mix.
- Run the engine with the heater on until warm, let it cool fully, then top up.
- Clean dirt and chaff off the radiator fins.
Tools: Drain tray, Antifreeze tester, Funnel
Valve clearances
Engine · when needed
Wrong clearances burn valves or make the engine noisy and down on power. The service manual gives 0.30 ± 0.05 mm inlet and exhaust with the engine cold. For the interval, check your handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rocker cover gasket | 1 | Also J902666, J929795 | 2852033 |
Step-by-step
- Only do this with the engine cold. Take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Remove the rocker cover.
- Turn the engine until the valves of the cylinder you are checking are fully closed.
- Check the gap between rocker and valve with a 0.30 mm feeler. It should be between 0.25 and 0.35 mm.
- If needed, slacken the locknut, turn the adjuster until the feeler is a light drag, hold it and tighten the locknut. Recheck.
- Repeat for every valve, refit the cover with a sound gasket and check for oil leaks.
Tools: Feeler gauges, Ring spanner and screwdriver, Socket set, Tool to turn the engine

Known problems
Gear shift and shuttle faults
Owners report shifting trouble and gears not engaging on JX tractors; check linkages and bolts before suspecting the gearbox itself.
PTO clutch wear
One owner reports that a worn PTO clutch means splitting the tractor to repair. Treat the PTO gently when engaging under load.
Brake fluid is LHM, not DOT
The brake circuit uses AKCELA LHM mineral fluid (service manual). Topping up with ordinary brake fluid ruins the seals.
Oil, filter and engine numbers vary by build
JX tractors were sold with Tier 1, Tier 2 and later engines and different air and fuel filters, so give the dealer your serial number before buying parts.
Repair guides
- Brake fluid top-up and bleeding (LHM mineral fluid) (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Brake pedal soft or travels further than usual, uneven braking, low level in the brake reservoir, or someone may have topped up with ordinary brake fluid.
- Milky, dirty or overheated transmission/hydraulic oil (Moderate, 2–4 hours plus the oil change): Oil on the dipstick milky, dark or smelling burnt; filters blocking early; whining pump; slow lift or steering. One oil serves gearbox, back axle, lift and (on the T5) steering, so trouble spreads.
- Identify your gearbox and build before ordering parts (Easy, 30 minutes): Wrong filter or part arrives, oil quantity does not match the handbook, or a parts list shows several numbers for one model.
- Gears or shuttle hard to select, jumping out of gear (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Gear lever stiff, gears will not go in or jump out, shuttle lever vague, or grinding when selecting with the clutch down.
- PTO clutch slipping or not freeing (dual clutch) (Hard, 1 hour to adjust; 1–2 days if the tractor must be split): PTO slows or stops under load, smell of hot clutch, PTO keeps turning when disengaged, or grinding when engaging the PTO lever.
- Main clutch slipping, dragging or judder (Hard, 1 hour to adjust; 1–2 days to replace): Engine revs rise but the tractor slows on a hill or under load; gears grind because the clutch does not free; judder when moving off.
- Wet disc brakes worn: checks and disc replacement (Hard, 1 hour of checks; a day per side for discs): Brakes need a long push, tractor pulls to one side, brakes judder or squeal, friction dust in the transmission filter.
- Water pump and thermostat replacement (Moderate, 3–4 hours): Temperature gauge into the red, coolant leak at the pump, noisy pump bearing, engine slow to warm up.
- Bleeding the fuel system and injector checks (Bosch VE pump) (Moderate, 1 hour to bleed; 2–3 hours to remove and test injectors): Engine will not start after running out of fuel or a filter change, misfire, knocking, black smoke or lumpy idle.
- Hydraulic lift slow, weak or drops (mechanical draft control) (Moderate, 1–4 hours): Linkage lifts slowly or not at all, will not hold an implement up, hunts up and down, or lifts with a groan.
- 4WD front axle: kingpin play, hub leaks and oil level (Hard, 1 hour to check; most of a day per side to repair): Clunk over bumps, steering wander, play when rocking the wheel top to bottom, oil on the inside of the wheel or the hub, axle oil low.
- Air conditioning not cooling: owner checks (Specialist, 1 hour of checks; specialist to recharge): Air con blows warm, compressor clutch not engaging, ice on the pipes, musty smell, weak airflow.
- Starter motor clicks or will not turn: testing and replacement (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Single click or rapid clicking, slow cranking, nothing at all when the key is turned, starter keeps running after the engine starts.
- Battery light on or not charging: alternator and drive belt (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Battery warning light on, flat battery each morning, belt squeal, voltage gauge low, lights dim at idle.
The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your tractor.
