Engine oil and filter change
Engine · when needed
The service manual sends you to the operator's handbook for the oil and filter interval, so check your handbook. It also says to halve that interval with fuel of 5–10 ppm sulphur, and quarter it above 10 ppm. The filter is changed every time.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 1 | 10W-40. AKCELA UNITEK No.1 SBL CJ-4 10W-40; quantity: check your handbook (see engine notes). Aztec Oils match: EMPROTEC UHPD-X 10W-40 | check your handbook |
| Engine oil filter | 1 | Check your handbook | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, lower any implement to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Warm the engine first, then stop it and wait a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
- Remove the sump plug and drain fully. Refit the plug with a new seal.
- Change the oil filter: clean round the head, remove the old one, oil the new seal and fit it by hand.
- Fill to the top mark on the dipstick with CJ-4 oil.
- Run the engine briefly, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level after a few minutes.
Tools: Drain tray (20 L), Socket for sump plug, Filter wrench, Funnel, Rags, Gloves
Fuel filter change
Fuel · when needed
Common-rail injection needs very clean fuel. For the interval, check your handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel filter (spin-on) | 1 | Agriline lists 84565884 (also 90412128) under the Maxxum 110 but gives no build dates; check against your serial number | 84565884 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine, take the key out, chock the wheels and keep naked flames away.
- Clean around the filter head.
- Unscrew the old filter and catch the fuel.
- Wet the new seal with clean diesel and fit the filter by hand.
- Prime the fuel system as your handbook shows before starting. Never open high-pressure common-rail pipes.
Tools: Filter wrench, Container for fuel, Rags
Transmission and hydraulic oil and filter change
Transmission · when needed
The gearbox, rear axle and hydraulics share about 62 L (16x16) or 65.5 L (24x24) of Hy-Tran Ultraction. The filters are changed with every oil change. For the interval, check your handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transmission/hydraulic oil | 1 | UTTO tractor transmission-hydraulic oil. AKCELA Hy-Tran Ultraction, ≈62 L (16x16) or ≈65.5 L (24x24) | check your handbook |
| Secondary hydraulic filter | 1 | Agriline lists it for the Maxxum 110 (also 47617638, 47617642), Tier 3 and Tier 4 | 87708150 |
| Other transmission filter(s) | 1 | Check your handbook | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, lower the linkage and any implement fully to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- With the engine off, move each spool valve lever both ways to release trapped hydraulic pressure.
- Let the oil cool for a while; hot oil burns. Then drain through the drain plugs.
- Refit the plugs, then change the filters, oiling each new seal.
- Refill with Hy-Tran Ultraction to the correct mark.
- Run the engine, work the linkage and steering, lower everything, stop and recheck the level. Check the filters for leaks.
Tools: Large drain tray (70 L), Spanners for drain plugs, Filter wrench, Oil pump
Front axle and hub oil change (4WD)
Front axle · when needed
The front differential holds about 9 L and each hub has its own oil, more if the axle has front brakes. For the interval, check your handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front axle oil | 1 | UTTO tractor transmission-hydraulic oil. AKCELA Hy-Tran Ultraction, ≈9 L differential plus each hub (see fluids) | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Drain the differential and both hubs (turn each wheel so its plug is at the bottom).
- Refit the drain plugs and fill each part to its level plug.
- Refit the plugs and check for leaks after a short drive.
Tools: Drain tray, Spanners for plugs, Oil pump
Coolant change
Cooling · when needed
Use either CNH XHD coolant mixed 50/50 or AKCELA Actifull OT extended-life coolant, never a mix of the two (service manual). For the interval, check your handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coolant | 1 | CNH XHD 50/50 or AKCELA Actifull OT, ≈21 L (check your handbook) | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Only work on a cold engine. Open the header tank cap very slowly to let pressure out; hot coolant scalds.
- Drain the coolant into a tray and dispose of it properly.
- If you are changing coolant type, flush the system as your handbook describes.
- Refill with the right coolant, run the engine with the heater on until warm, let it cool and top up.
Tools: Drain tray, Antifreeze tester, Funnel
Air cleaner elements
Engine · when needed
Dust past the filter wears the engine fast. Change the elements when the warning shows or as your handbook says.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outer and inner air filter elements | 1 | Check your handbook | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run it with the element out.
- Remove the outer element carefully so no dust falls inside.
- Wipe the housing clean with a damp rag. Leave the inner element in place unless changing it.
- Fit the new element and check the cover seals all round.
Tools: Torch, Clean damp rag, Dust mask

Known problems
High-sulphur fuel shortens the oil interval
The service manual says halve the oil and filter interval with fuel of 5–10 ppm sulphur and quarter it above 10 ppm. Use road-grade low-sulphur diesel.
Do not mix coolant types
Conventional (CNH XHD) and organic (Actifull OT) coolants must not be mixed. Follow the handbook's flushing steps if you switch.
Use CJ-4 engine oil
This engine has SCR exhaust treatment, and Case IH specifies CJ-4 oils. Older CH-4 oils are not on the list.
Hub oil depends on the axle
Front hub capacity differs with the axle class and whether front brakes are fitted, so check which axle you have before filling.

Repair guides
- Brake fluid top-up and bleeding (LHM mineral fluid) (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Brake pedal soft or travels further than usual, uneven braking, low level in the brake reservoir, or someone may have topped up with ordinary brake fluid.
- Milky, dirty or overheated transmission/hydraulic oil (Moderate, 2–4 hours plus the oil change): Oil on the dipstick milky, dark or smelling burnt; filters blocking early; whining pump; slow lift or steering. One oil serves gearbox, back axle, lift and (on the T5) steering, so trouble spreads.
- Water in fuel, fuel filters and priming (common-rail engines) (Moderate, 1 hour): Water-in-fuel warning, engine hesitating or losing power, hard starting after a filter change, or a fault code for low rail pressure.
- AdBlue (SCR) warnings and power loss: owner checks (Specialist, 30 minutes of checks; dealer for faults): AdBlue level or quality warning, SCR fault light, engine power reduced (derate), white crystals around the dosing parts.
- Identify your gearbox and build before ordering parts (Easy, 30 minutes): Wrong filter or part arrives, oil quantity does not match the handbook, or a parts list shows several numbers for one model.
- Coolant types mixed: flush and refill (Moderate, 3–4 hours): Coolant looks brown, cloudy or has sludge; someone topped up with a different coolant; overheating after a top-up.
- Electro Command / semi-powershift: harsh shifts, no drive or fault codes (Specialist, 1 hour of checks; dealer for calibration): Jerky take-off, powershift steps slow or missing, no drive in one direction, transmission fault code, gear display flashing.
- Wet disc brakes worn: checks and disc replacement (Hard, 1 hour of checks; a day per side for discs): Brakes need a long push, tractor pulls to one side, brakes judder or squeal, friction dust in the transmission filter.
- Water pump and thermostat replacement (FPT common-rail engines) (Moderate, 3–5 hours): Overheating, coolant leak from the pump weep hole, squeal or rumble from the belt area, slow warm-up or a coolant temperature fault code.
- Electronic draft control (EDC) lift faults: owner checks (Specialist, 1 hour of checks): Lift will not raise, raises on its own, hunts up and down, EDC warning on the dash, mudguard buttons not working.
- Electro-hydraulic PTO will not engage or switches off (Moderate, 1 hour of checks): PTO will not start, starts then cuts out, PTO light flashing, PTO slips under load.
- 4WD front axle: kingpin play, hub leaks and oil level (Hard, 1 hour to check; most of a day per side to repair): Clunk over bumps, steering wander, play when rocking the wheel top to bottom, oil on the inside of the wheel or the hub, axle oil low.
- Air conditioning not cooling: owner checks (Specialist, 1 hour of checks; specialist to recharge): Air con blows warm, compressor clutch not engaging, ice on the pipes, musty smell, weak airflow.
- Starter motor clicks or will not turn: testing and replacement (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Single click or rapid clicking, slow cranking, nothing at all when the key is turned, starter keeps running after the engine starts.
- Battery light on or not charging: alternator and drive belt (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Battery warning light on, flat battery each morning, belt squeal, voltage gauge low, lights dim at idle.
