Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 750 hours

Case IH says the Stage V Puma engines are designed for 750-hour oil and filter change intervals. Oil and filter are changed together. Case IH gives no months figure, so check your handbook for a yearly limit.

Step-by-step
  1. Warm the engine, then park on level ground, lower the linkage, front hitch and any loader or implement to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully. Refit the plug with a new seal if your handbook calls for one.
  4. Clean round the filter head, remove the old filter and check its seal came off with it.
  5. Oil the new filter seal with clean engine oil and fit it by hand.
  6. Fill to the top mark on the dipstick with the oil your handbook gives.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level after a few minutes.

Tools: Drain tray (25 L), Socket for sump plug, Filter wrench, Funnel, Rags, Gloves

Engine air filter elements (outer and inner)

Engine · every 1,200 hours

Case IH sells one genuine air filter kit for the Puma covering both elements, and calls it right for the 1,200-hour service. Change sooner if the air filter warning comes on or in dusty work.

Transmission, rear axle and hydraulic oil and filters change

Transmission · every 1,500 hours

Case IH's UK magazine says the engine and rear axle oil are drained at the Puma 1,500-hour service and checked for metal shavings. The oil quantity and filter numbers were not in any source we could read, so check your handbook. The filters are changed with every oil change.

Transmission/hydraulic filter(s)1Check your handbook. The genuine kit for earlier Pumas (to Oct 2018) lists hydraulic filter 47617638; not confirmed for Stage Vcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower the linkage, front hitch and any implement fully to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. With the engine off, move each spool valve lever both ways to release trapped pressure.
  3. Let hot oil cool for a while; it burns. Then drain through the drain plugs.
  4. Look at the drained oil and the plugs for metal shavings. Case IH says these are rare at 1,500 hours and can point to a deeper problem, so tell your dealer if you find any.
  5. Refit the plugs and change the filters, oiling each new seal.
  6. Refill with the oil your handbook gives to the correct mark.
  7. Run the engine, work the linkage, steering and spools, lower everything, stop and recheck the level. Check the filters for leaks.

Tools: Large drain tray (100 L), Spanners for drain plugs, Filter wrench, Oil pump, Magnet or clean cloth to check for metal, Gloves

Cab activated carbon filter (spray tractors)

Cab · every 2 years

Carbon filters protect the driver when spraying, better than the standard pollen filter. Case IH says they typically need replacing every two years.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Remove the carbon filter, wearing gloves and a mask as it may hold spray residue.
  3. Bag the old filter and dispose of it as chemical waste.
  4. Fit the new filter and check the cover seals. Refit the standard filter when you are not spraying, if your handbook says so.

Tools: Screwdriver, Dust mask, Gloves

Fuel filter and pre-filter (water separator)

Fuel · when needed

Common-rail injectors are easily damaged by dirt and water. Case IH says the Stage V fuel filter sits low on the right-hand side of the engine bay, but no source we could read gave the change interval, so check your handbook. Drain water from the pre-filter whenever it shows.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Fuel filter1Check your handbookcheck your handbook

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean round both filter heads before opening anything.
  3. Drain any water from the pre-filter bowl into a container.
  4. Remove the old filters and catch the fuel. Fit the new ones with clean seals wetted with diesel.
  5. Prime the fuel system as your handbook describes. Never open the high-pressure common-rail pipes.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves

AdBlue (DEF) filter and supply module: dealer service

Exhaust · when needed

Case IH calls the HI-eSCR2 system maintenance-free, with no regeneration and no DPF, but the AdBlue system still has a supply module. No source we could read gave a filter interval or part number, so check your handbook or ask your dealer.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Book this with a Case IH dealer unless your handbook gives an owner procedure.
  2. Keep the 48 L tank topped up with clean AdBlue only, from a clean container, and keep the cap shut.
  3. Never work near the exhaust until it has cooled; it runs very hot.

Tools: Dealer service tool

Front axle and hub oil change

Front axle · when needed

The front differential and each hub have their own oil. No source we could read gave the interval, quantities or oil type for the Stage V Puma 185, so check your handbook.

PartQtyNotesPart number

  1. Park on level ground, lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn each wheel so its hub plug is in the drain position your handbook shows.
  3. Drain the differential and both hubs.
  4. Refit the drain plugs and fill each part to its level plug.
  5. Wipe the axle clean and check for leaks after a short drive.

Tools: Drain tray, Spanners for plugs, Oil pump

Coolant change

Cooling · when needed

Coolant protects against frost, corrosion and liner pitting but wears out. No source we could read gave the coolant type, quantity or interval for this model, so check your handbook and test the coolant every year.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Coolant1Type and quantity: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Only work on a cold engine. Open the header tank cap slowly to let pressure out; hot coolant scalds.
  2. Drain the radiator and block into a tray and dispose of old coolant properly.
  3. Refit the plugs and fill with the coolant your handbook gives. Do not mix coolant types.
  4. Run the engine with the heater on until warm, let it cool and top up.

Tools: Drain tray, Coolant tester, Funnel

Cab fresh air and recirculation filters

Cab · when needed

Case IH says the cab air filter is checked at every dealer service and most often replaced at the 1,500-hour service, to keep out pollen, insects and dust. No set interval or Stage V part number was in any source we could read, so check your handbook.

Known problems

Earlier Puma parts may not fit

Genuine Case IH filter kits for earlier Pumas run to October 2018, and part numbers have changed over the years. Order Stage V filters by your serial number.

No DPF, no regeneration

Case IH says the Stage V Puma uses HI-eSCR2 only, with no exhaust gas recirculation, no DPF and no regeneration. Clean AdBlue is the main thing the system needs.

Metal in the oil

At the 1,500-hour service Case IH checks drained engine and rear axle oil for metal shavings. They are rare at that age; Case IH says trouble more often shows around 5,000 to 6,000 hours.

HVO approved

Case IH says the Stage V FPT engine is fully compatible with HVO renewable diesel.
