Fuel water trap check

Fuel · every 50 hours

The water trap is a bowl on the fuel lift pump. Case says check it every 50 hours and drain any water or dirt.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Water trap bowl seal1If damaged; check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine. Undo the screw on the bowl clamp and swing it clear.
  2. Remove the bowl, empty any water and sediment and clean it.
  3. Check the seal, refit the bowl and tighten the clamp. Bleed the fuel system if it will not start.

Tools: Screwdriver, Rag, Container

50-hour greasing and checks (named points)

Chassis · every 50 hours

The Case lubrication chart lists these points every 50 hours. In severe wet conditions the axle pivot, king pins and front hubs are greased every 10 hours. Check the power steering reservoir, transmission oil level and (cab) brake and clutch reservoirs at the same time.

Step-by-step
  1. Wipe each nipple clean before greasing.
  2. Grease: ramshaft (2; 3 on the 1494), front axle pivot (2), king pins (2), front wheel hubs (2), final drive output shafts (2), lift rods (3), levelling lever gearbox (1), top link (1), sensing unit and cable (1).
  3. Grease the PTO clutch release bearing (1) with only two strokes of the gun so it does not get on the clutch. The 1494 chart puts this at 400 hours.
  4. Oil the park brake cables (cab tractors) and the control lever pivot points.
  5. MFD tractors: grease the pivot bushes (2), splined sleeve (2), swivel pins (4) and steering cylinder ends (2), and clean the axle breather.
  6. Check the power steering reservoir, transmission dipstick and coolant level, tyre pressures, wheel nut tightness, brakes and clutch adjustment, and battery level.

Tools: Grease gun, Oil can, Rags

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 100 hours

Case says change the engine oil every 100 hours, and sooner with heavy pulling, lots of stop-start work or very hot or cold weather. The handbook only asks for a new filter every 200 hours (every other oil change), but Steve's rule is to fit one at every change. Change oil and filter after the first 20 hours on a new or rebuilt engine.

Step-by-step
  1. Run the engine warm, park on level ground, stop it and take the key out. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  2. Take out the sump drain plug and let the oil drain.
  3. Unscrew the filter with a strap wrench, wipe the filter seat clean and smear clean oil on the new filter's seal.
  4. Screw the new filter on until the seal touches, then a further ½ to ¾ turn by hand only.
  5. Refit the drain plug and pour in about 7.4 L of oil. The 1494 handbook says measure the oil in rather than filling to the dipstick.
  6. Pull the stop control out and crank for no more than 30 seconds to prime the oil, wait a minute, push the stop in and start. Run at about 1,000 rpm for five minutes.
  7. Stop, wait for the oil to drain back, then check the dipstick on level ground and top up. Check for leaks.

Known problems

Hydraulic filter overdue

The transmission oil also feeds the hydraulics, which run high pressure with small clearances. Case says don't run more than 400 hours on one filter element, and use only the Case element.

Two different MFD front axles

The front axle changed at PIN 11503001 (1394) / 11518001 (1494). The later axle takes less oil in the differential and hubs, so check which one you have before filling.

Wrong brake fluid on cab tractors

The cab tractors' hydraulic brakes and clutch use Agricastrol FBS only. The green reservoir covers or green tape mark this. Don't top up with ordinary brake fluid.
