Re-tighten nuts and bolts after the first 10 hours
Frame · every 10 hours
Claas says to recheck every nut and bolt on a new machine after 10 hours and tighten them. Check the wheel nuts after the first 10 hours too, then every 50 hours, to the torque in your handbook.
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, switch off the tractor, take the key out and disconnect the PTO shaft.
- Go over every nut and bolt on the frame, headstock, skids and covers and tighten any that have moved.
- Check that all split pins and roll pins are in place.
- Check the wheel nuts if the machine has transport wheels. Afterwards check them every 50 hours.
Tools: Spanner and socket set, Torque wrench
Mower knives: check, turn or replace
Cutterbar · every 10 hours
Claas says to check the knives before every use and after hitting anything. Replace cracked, bent or worn knives at once. Both knives must be fitted on every disc, or the cutterbar goes out of balance. A blunt knife can be turned over to use its other edge.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mower knife, anti-clockwise rotating disc | 2 | Per disc. Number from the Disco knife box listing and the Disco Contour manual | 000 952 043 0 |
| Mower knife, clockwise rotating disc | 2 | Per disc | 000 952 042 0 |
| Knife securing screw and nut | 1 | Replace if the screw is bent, worn from 18 mm to 15 mm, or the thread coating has gone. Claas part numbers: check your handbook | check your handbook |
| Thread locker, Loctite 243 | 1 | Also sold as DELO ML 5328 (Claas 201 802.1). Needed every time the nuts are done up | 666 285.0 |
Step-by-step
- Switch off the tractor, take the key out and remove the PTO shaft. Wear gloves.
- Measure each knife 10 mm in from its edge: it should be at least 36 mm wide. The drilled hole may be widened from 18 mm to 20 mm at most. Replace knives outside these limits. Never weld or straighten a knife.
- To change knives on the Plus models, put the fitting lever between the disc and the knife holder, turn the disc until the holder sits over the dip in the skid, then push the lever down and lift the knife off.
- Fit the new knife with its cutting edge down and the arrow on the blade pointing the way the disc turns. The holding pin must sit straight in the disc hole.
- On the Disco 3050 and 2650 (nut-fixed knives): clean the seat, fit the knife with Loctite 243 on the screw and tighten to 120 Nm.
- Check that each knife swings freely and can be moved easily both ways. Take the fitting lever off and refit it in its bracket on the headstock.
- Spare knives live in the knife box on the left of the headstock.
Tools: Knife fitting lever (kept on the machine), Socket and torque wrench (120 Nm), Gloves, Eye protection
Knife holders and cutting discs
Cutterbar · every 10 hours
Claas says the holders and discs must be checked before every use. Worn or bent holders or widened disc holes let knives fly off. Use only genuine Claas holders.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knife holder (blade holder) | 1 | Genuine Claas holder, listed by Partao for Disco 2650, 3050 (incl. C, TC, TRC, Plus) and 3450 (incl. C, TC, TRC, Plus). Claas also lists 0006889550 for Disco 3050 / 3450 / 2650; check which your disc takes in the parts book | 0000625090 |
Step-by-step
- Replace a holder if its wear section is down from 15 mm to 12 mm, its thickness is down from 3 mm to 4 mm worn, the welds at the retaining pin are cracked, or it is bent.
- Replace the holder if the retaining pin no longer sits straight in the disc hole, has a gap round it, or is worn down to 13 mm.
- Replace a disc if its hole is widened, worn or damaged anywhere round its diameter.
- When fitting discs, keep the long axis of each disc at right angles to its neighbour so the knives cannot collide.
- Tighten the disc bolts to 80 Nm and the centre nut to 350 Nm.
- Refit the plastic cover on each disc centre at once if it is damaged or missing, or the hub fills with crop and goes out of balance.
Tools: Vernier calliper, Spanners, Torque wrench
Greasing (20, 100 and 250 hour points)
Lubrication · every 20 hours
Claas's lubrication chart has three groups of grease points, every 20, 100 and 250 hours, and says to grease more often in hard conditions. The chart shows which point is in which group. Use the chart in your handbook as you go round.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| EP2 grease | 1 | Good-quality EP2 lithium grease, as in the fluids list. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Switch off the tractor, take the key out and clean every nipple before greasing.
- Grease the points marked for 20 hours every 20 hours, the 100 hour points every 100 hours and the 250 hour points every 250 hours.
- On the Disco 3050 C and 2650 C, unscrew cover D to reach the conditioner point. Grease only the disc seating on the double joint.
- Grease the PTO shaft following the shaft maker's instructions.
Tools: Grease gun, Rags
Angle drive gearbox oil change (left and right)
Gearbox · every 100 hours or every year
Claas says to change the oil after the first 10 hours on a new or rebuilt gearbox, then every 100 hours and at the latest after each harvest season. Check the level daily and clean the breather valve after the first 10 hours.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear oil | 1 | SAE 85W-90, API GL-5 (MIL-L-2105B). Right-hand gearbox 1.0 L, left-hand gearbox 1.5 L, so about 2.5 L for both | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Swing the cutterbar into the horizontal position and park on level ground.
- Turn each angle drive until its drain screw is at the lowest point.
- Undo the breather valve and drain screw and let the oil run out. Replace the drain screw.
- Refill through the filling hole (the right-hand gearbox 1.0 L, the left-hand gearbox 1.5 L) until the dipstick shows the full mark.
- Clean the breather valve after the first 10 hours and then at regular intervals, so it stays free.
- If you take the angle drive apart, the flange faces must be resealed with Claas CASCO adhesive (part no. 201 802.1) when you put it back.
Tools: Drain tray (3 L), Spanner for the drain screws, Funnel, Rags
Conditioner gearbox oil change (3050 C and 2650 C)
Gearbox · every 100 hours or every year
Claas says the first oil change is after 30 hours (also after a gearbox overhaul), then every 100 hours and at the latest at the end of harvest. Only the C models have this gearbox.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear oil | 1 | SAE 85W-90, API GL-5 (MIL-L-2105B). 1.0 L (version A) or 0.8 L (version B) | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Look at your gearbox. Version A has an oil filling and check screw and is emptied by sucking the oil out. Version B has a filler cap with dipstick and a drain screw.
- Drain the old oil.
- Fill with the right quantity: 1.0 L for version A, 0.8 L for version B.
- Check the level at the check screw (version A) or the dipstick (version B).
Tools: Drain tray, Oil suction pump (version A), Spanner, Funnel
Mower head (cutterbar) gear oil change
Gearbox · every 200 hours or every year
Claas says to change the cutterbar oil after the first 50 working hours (and after any overhaul), then every 200 hours and at the latest after each harvest season. Check the level daily. Use only EP SAE 90 gear oil.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear oil | 1 | EP SAE 90. Disco 3450 5.0 L, Disco 3050 / 3050 C 4.5 L, Disco 2650 / 2650 C 4.0 L. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-4 90 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Warm the cutterbar up by running it for about 8–10 minutes, then swing the mower unit into the horizontal position.
- Stop the PTO and the tractor and take the key out. Wait 10 minutes for the oil to settle before checking the level.
- Drain the oil through the opening with the magnetic plug. Clean the magnetic plug before refitting it.
- Pour fresh oil in through the filling opening up to the level of the check opening.
- Claas says a warm cutterbar is no worry as long as the discs still turn by hand at working temperature.
Tools: Drain tray (6 L), Spanner, Funnel, Rags
V-belt tension and replacement
Drive · every year
Claas says check the belt tension after the first 5 hours, then at regular intervals but gives no hour figure, so this is set to once a year. Check sooner if the belts slip. A worn or broken belt means replacing the whole set.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| V-belt set | 1 | Replace as a complete set. Claas part number: check your handbook | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the mower and make sure it cannot restart. Take the PTO shaft off.
- The belts are right when the notch on the crank lines up with the welded strap. Turn the crank to tension.
- Check that the crank link pin sits in the hole for your PTO speed (540 or 1000 rpm).
- If one belt is worn or broken, replace all of them together.
Tools: Crank (on the machine)
Hydraulic hoses and cylinders
Hydraulics · every year
Claas says to check the hoses before first use and at least once afterwards, and to replace a hose 6 years after the date on it. Hydraulic repairs are for Claas workshops only.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic hose | 1 | Only if cracked, rubbing or older than 6 years. Genuine Claas hose from a dealer | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Fold the mower out and release the pressure in the circuit.
- Look at every hose and fitting for chafing, cracks and leaks. Never feel for a leak with your hand.
- Find the date on each hose (for example 1Q2006 is the first quarter of 2006) and replace any hose more than 6 years old.
Tools: Rags, Card (for finding leaks)
End-of-season storage
Storage · every year
Claas lists eight steps at the end of the season. The oil is changed so the gears are not left standing in used oil all winter.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear oil | 1 | 85W-90. As in the oil change tasks | check your handbook |
| EP2 grease | 1 | Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Clean the dirt off the mower unit.
- Drain the oil from the angle drives and the mower head and refill to the right level with new oil.
- Grease every lubrication point until grease comes out of the bearings. Let the mower run for a short time.
- Check the machine for wear and damage and have repairs done.
- Take the V-belts off and store them in a dry place.
- Clean off rust marks and touch up the paint.
- Grease the PTO shaft guard tubes so they do not freeze, and clean and grease the shaft.
- Store the machine in a dry building, in working position, away from any fertiliser.

Known problems
Plastic disc covers missing
A missing cover on a cutting disc lets crop pack into the hub and sets up vibration. Replace it straight away.
Wrong oil in the mower head
The cutterbar takes EP SAE 90 gear oil only. The angle drives take 85W-90 GL-5.
Mixed knife fitting
Fit the knife whose arrow matches the disc's direction of rotation. Always fit both knives on a disc.
