Gearbox leak check and oil level (transfer case and swath gearbox)

Gearbox · every 10 hours

Claas's maintenance table has the leak check and oil level for both gearboxes as regular checks, including before harvest and daily on a hard-worked machine. Check the level at the inspection opening: oil should reach its lower edge.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Gear oil1SAE 90 hypoid, API GL-5 (MIL-L-2105), for topping up. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-5 90check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, put the rake in working position, switch the PTO and tractor off, take the key out and apply the parking brake.
  2. Look over both gearboxes for oil leaks.
  3. Take the screw plug out of the inspection opening. Oil must be up to the lower edge. Top up through the filler opening if it is low.
  4. Clean the plug and tighten it so it seals.

Greasing (20, 50, 100 and 250 hour points)

Lubrication · every 20 hours

Claas's lubrication chart has four groups of points: 20 h (points 1–8), 50 h (9–17), 100 h (18–28) and 250 h (29–32). Under difficult conditions the intervals are shorter. Grease points get grease; hinges and linkages get chain oil.

Chain oil1Claas Roller chain oil BIOHEES 465, 5 L can. Biodegradable only. Aztec Oils match: AGRITEC CHAINSAW 100XT000 147 457 0
Step-by-step
  1. PTO off, tractor stopped, key out, hydraulics locked, and support the machine if it is raised.
  2. Clean the nipples. Grease every 20 hour point every 20 hours, the 50 hour points every 50 hours, and so on up to 250 hours. The numbered chart in your handbook shows where each point is.
  3. Oil the joints and once-through lubrication points with chain oil as needed.
  4. The tractor-end universal drive shaft is on the 20 and 50 hour list; the transfer case shafts are on the 100 and 250 hour list.

Re-tighten the bolts and check all fixings

Frame · every 50 hours

Claas ticks the bolt check and the joining-element check at several intervals, including the first run and every 50 hours, and says to check the torques regularly.

Step-by-step
  1. Check the swath gearbox bolts (85 Nm), rotor suspension bolts (304 Nm), tine bolts (75 Nm), rotor frame nuts and bolts (207 Nm and M10 48.5 Nm), longitudinal frame nuts (304 Nm), crossmember bolts (323 Nm), cover bolts (10 Nm) and coupling frame M10 nuts (48.5 Nm).
  2. Retighten any that have moved. Replace worn or bent fixings and any missing pins.
  3. Wheel nuts: 300 Nm on the road running gear and 417 Nm on the guide wheel axle nuts. After fitting a wheel retighten after 10 hours and then every 50 hours.

Tools: Torque wrench, Spanner set

Transfer case and swath gearbox oil change

Gearbox · every year

Claas's table ticks the oil change twice for each gearbox, but the columns could not be read from the copy found: check your handbook for the first-change hours. A yearly change (the 'annually' column, equal to 500 hours) is the safe interval.

Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground with the rake in working position, the PTO off, the tractor stopped and the key out.
  2. Put a container under the drain plug, unscrew the drain plug and drain all the old oil.
  3. Clean the plug and tighten it so it seals.
  4. Fill through the filler opening (screw plug 1) and check the level at the inspection opening.
  5. On the transfer case, unscrew and clean the breather valve and check it works, then refit it.

Tools: Drain tray (6 L), Spanner, Funnel, Rags

Tines, tine arms and spring brackets

Rotor · every year

Claas says to check the spring bracket setting and the tine bolt torque at regular intervals. Broken tines leave strips of crop behind.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Spring tine1Genuine Claas tine. Part number: check your handbook or parts cataloguecheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Look at every tine for bending or breaks. Replace damaged tines.
  2. Tighten the 12 tine bolts to 75 Nm.
  3. Open the spring bracket on each arm and check the holder is at dimension X = 14 mm. If not, slacken the nut, move the holder, retighten and close the bracket.
  4. Blow out the open sections of the arms with compressed air every day in harvest, so residues cannot jam the arms.

Tools: Torque wrench, Spanners, Tape measure

Overload protection and PTO shaft

Drive · every year

The overload protection saves the drive when the rotor hits something. Claas says its maximum torque (basic setting 945 Nm) must not be altered and only a workshop works on it.

Step-by-step
  1. Look at the overload protection for damage and signs of slipping. Have a workshop work on it if it is worn.
  2. Service the PTO shaft following its maker's instructions. Replace damaged guard tubes, cones and chains.
  3. After the season, clean and grease the shaft in all parts. In winter, grease the guard tubes so they cannot freeze up.

Tools: Spanner

Track and toe-in check (road running gear)

Running gear · every year

Claas says check the rake follows the tractor in a straight line before first use. Wrong track or toe-in wears tyres and swings the rake sideways.

Step-by-step
  1. Drive straight for about 100 m and check the rake tracks centrally behind the tractor.
  2. If it runs to the right, lengthen the connecting rod; if to the left, shorten it. Refit the pin and split pin and tighten the lock nut.
  3. Check the toe-in: the distance between the wheels at the rear rim flange (X2) should be 1–4 mm less than at the front (X1). Adjust the steering rods and tighten the clamps to 50 Nm. Recheck the track.
  4. Check the tyre pressure to your handbook.

Tools: Tape measure, Spanners

Hydraulic hoses and accumulator

Hydraulics · every year

Claas says check the hoses before first use and at least once a year, and replace any older than 6 years. The accumulator (only with individual rotor lifting) loses 2–3% a year.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Hydraulic hose1Only if damaged or over 6 years old. Genuine Claas hosecheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the machine, release the pressure and stop the engine.
  2. Check each hose and fitting. Find the leaks with a piece of card or wood, never your hand.
  3. Read the date on each hose (for example 1Q/08 is the first quarter of 2008) and replace hoses over 6 years old.
  4. If fitted, have the accumulator checked at a workshop every 5 years (50 bar nitrogen).

Tools: Rags, Card (for finding leaks)

End-of-season clean and lay-up

Storage · every year

Claas says to clean and grease the universal drive shafts after the work season and again after any long stoppage, and to check them before restart.

PartQtyNotesPart number
EP2 grease1Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Clean the rake and take off dirt and stalks, especially in the arms.
  2. Grease every point in the lubrication chart, then check the oil levels.
  3. Clean and grease the PTO shaft and grease the guard tubes.
  4. Check the wheel nuts, hoses and tines and make repairs before the next season.

Arm sections blocked with residue

Claas says to blow out the open sections of the arms with compressed air every day, or crop packs in and damages the machine.

Overload setting

The overload protection must not be reset or altered. Only a workshop touches it.
