Service jobs and parts

Check and adjust drive chain tension

Drives · every 50 hours

Claas: check all chains for tension after the first 10 hours, then regularly. The maintenance table puts the check at every 50 hours.

Step-by-step
  1. With the tight side loaded, push the middle of the slack side with your thumb.
  2. The chain is right when the slack side moves about 2% of the shaft centre distance (500 mm centres gives 10 mm).
  3. Adjust if needed. Grease the pivoting segment and other points on the lubrication plan.

Tools: Rule or tape

Wheel nuts, hub play, tyres and hitch bolts

Running gear · every 50 hours

Per the maintenance table: wheel nuts and hitch eye / drawbar clamp bolts after the first 10 to 15 hours and then every 50 hours, hub clearance after the first 50 hours then every 100 hours, tyre condition and pressure checks as necessary. The torque and pressure figures were not read from this copy, so use the Specifications page.

Step-by-step
  1. Retighten the wheel nuts to the torque in your handbook.
  2. Check the hitch eye and drawbar clamp bolts and tighten.
  3. Check hub play and adjust if needed, and check tyre condition and pressure.

Tools: Torque wrench, Tyre gauge

Angle drive gearbox oil and level

Gearbox · every 500 hours or every year

Claas says to change the gearbox oil after the first 50 hours (or after overhauling the gearbox), then every 500 hours or once a year, whichever comes first. The maintenance table also has an oil level check every 50 hours. The gearbox has no filter.

Step-by-step
  1. Stand the baler on level ground, as the level must be checked horizontal.
  2. Take out the bleeder with the dipstick (E) and remove the drain plug (A). Drain the oil while warm.
  3. Refit the drain plug and fill with SAE 90 gear oil through the bleeder hole to the right level, then refit the bleeder.
  4. Check the level every 50 hours and do the first oil change after 50 hours on a new or overhauled gearbox.

Hydraulic oil filter insert (machines with a filter system)

Hydraulics · every 500 hours or every year

Claas: change the filter insert for the first time after 150 hours, then every 500 hours or once every year.

Step-by-step
  1. Relieve the pressure in the hydraulic system before opening the filter.
  2. Unscrew the bottom section of the housing from the top section and remove the old insert.
  3. Fit the new insert, refit the housing and check for leaks.
  4. Collect any leaked oil and dispose of the old insert as the manual says.

Check shear bolts on main and pick-up drive

Drives · every year

The pick-up and cross augers are protected by a shear bolt, and the main drive has a shear bolt or cam clutch on the 240/250/254. Claas says to replace a broken bolt with one of equal quality. No interval is given, so this is a yearly check that spares are in the cab.

Step-by-step
  1. Look at the shear bolts on the pick-up drive and main drive.
  2. If one has gone, fit a new bolt of the same quality, never a stronger one.
  3. Keep spare bolts with the baler.

Clean the baler and compressed air tubes

General · every year

The maintenance table has cleaning straw and dirt from the baler, especially the wrapping units, before starting up, and cleaning the rollers (Rollant 255) and roller openings every 50 hours. Check the compressed air tubes and coupling heads for condition.

Step-by-step
  1. Clean dirt and straw off the baler, especially the wrapping units.
  2. On the 255, clean the rollers and roller openings every 50 hours.
  3. Check the compressed air tubes and coupling heads are in good condition.
