Angle gearbox oil change

Gearbox · every 500 hours or every year

Claas: first change after 50 hours (and after any gearbox overhaul), then every 500 hours or once a year. About 2.5 L of SAE 90 hypoid oil. There is no filter.

  2. Remove the breather (L), the filler and level plug (E) and the drain plug (A), and drain the oil into the tray.
  3. Clean and refit the drain plug.
  4. Fill with SAE 90 hypoid oil through E until it reaches the level hole (about 2.5 L).
  5. Refit the filler plug and check the breather is clear.
  6. On a new or overhauled gearbox, change it after the first 50 hours.

Tools: Drain tray (5 L), Spanners for plugs, Funnel, Gloves

Chain oiler refill

Chains and lubrication · every month

Claas says refill the automatic chain oiler after about 150 bales. The app can't count bales, so this is a monthly reminder: refill by bale count in between.

  2. Fill the reservoir (T) with clean SAE 90 gear oil or HD 20 / HD 30 engine oil.
  3. Never mix in diesel or any other flammable liquid.

Start-of-season checks: chains, clutch, shear bolt, tyres

Storage · every year

Claas gives chain tension, slip clutch and shear bolt settings but no interval for checking them. They are gathered here as a pre-season check, with the tyre pressure and wheel bolt torque.

Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower the pick-up and tailgate fully, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes. Wait until every chain and roller has stopped.
  2. Roller chains (press roller drives): loosen the lock nuts and turn the spring cylinders until the spring length (X) is 140 mm, then retighten the lock nuts.
  3. Pick-up drive chain: tension it moderately with the tensioning sprocket.
  4. Pick-up slip clutch: set to 280 Nm. Never tighten it so far that it can't slip.
  5. Main drive: unlock the guard, fold it up and hang it on the winch crank. Oil the chain of the chain coupling with SAE 90. Check the shear bolt is an M10 × 55 grade 8.8 and carry spares.
  6. Refit every guard.
  7. Tyres: 2.5 bar (35 psi). Wheel bolts: 150 Nm.
  8. Check the twine tubes and twine ropes run freely, and the twine box is clean.
  9. Hitch up and turn slowly left and right to check the PTO shaft doesn't bind. Engage the PTO only with the engine at idle.

Winter storage

Storage · every year

Claas's winter storage steps: clean, grease to the chart, look after the chains and take the weight off the tyres.

Step-by-step
  1. Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine and take the key out. Lower the tailgate and pick-up.
  2. Clean the baler inside and out. Wash old grease and dust off the bearings with diesel.
  3. Grease every point on the lubrication chart until grease comes out of the bearings, then, with everyone clear, run the baler briefly.
  4. Clean the chains and grease them.
  5. Note any worn or damaged parts and get them repaired before the season.
  6. Coat the tyres with a tyre protection treatment.
  7. Store it under cover, somewhere dry and away from fertiliser.
  8. Jack it onto blocks and drop the tyres to about 0.5 bar. If you can't block it up, keep them at 2.5 bar.

Tools: Diesel and a brush (for cleaning bearings), Grease gun, Axle stands or blocks, Tyre pressure gauge

Known problems

Shear bolt grade

Only use an M10 × 55 grade 8.8 bolt in the main drive. A stronger bolt passes the overload on to the gearbox and chains.

Slip clutch seized

A pick-up slip clutch that has rusted solid or been overtightened no longer protects anything. Claas sets it at 280 Nm.

Never use diesel in the chain oiler

Claas forbids diesel or other flammable liquids in the chain oil tank.
