Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 500 hours

Fendt's official engine oil interval is 500 hours, and the dealer changes the oil and filter at every service. UK dealer Pyketts recommends every 250 hours on hard-worked tractors to keep the oil clean and protect the valves.

Step-by-step
  1. Warm the engine, then park on level ground, lower implements to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand for a few minutes. Hot oil burns: wear gloves and keep your arms clear of the stream.
  3. Remove the sump drain plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the oil filter, check the old seal has come off, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight.
  6. Fit a new gasket to the drain plug, refit it, and fill with 15W-40 to the full mark on the dipstick.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level. Look at the oil colour at each check: sooty oil is a warning sign.

Tools: Drain tray (25 L), Filter wrench, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel, Rags, Gloves

Fuel filter change

Fuel · every 500 hours

The dealer changes the fuel filter at every 500-hour service. Water and dirt in diesel damage the injection pump and injectors. The tractor also has a fuel pre-filter and a hand-pump strainer; check your handbook for when to change those.

Known problems

Over-revving the engine

Farmers Weekly says over-revving, often when hauling downhill, is the main engine killer. Maximum is 2,600 rpm (on a cab sticker); ease off gently and use the foot brake and exhaust brake on hills.

Vario transmission abuse

Lifting off the throttle sharply at speed and heavy field work in range two can wreck the main bearing and the hydraulic pump in the Vario. A well-kept box can pass 15,000 hours. Sniff the dipstick for a burnt smell and listen for rattles.

Wrong oil in the wrong tank

Transmission and hydraulics have separate tanks. Owners do put hydraulic oil in the transmission tank by mistake; check which filler you are using.

Chafed transmission oil pipes

Pipes can rub through and leak. Lazy shuttling when warm is the usual symptom. Replace worn pipes early.

Brakes binding

Muck on the brake cables can stop the brakes releasing fully, causing heat and binding. Only the right-hand brake has a wear sensor. Badly adjusted rear brakes overload the front brake.

Oil cooler and boost hoses

A leaking oil cooler puts oil in the coolant (murky expansion tank). Boost hoses can chafe on the bonnet or pop off, causing whistling and black smoke.
