Service jobs and parts

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 500 hours

The Fendt dealer's Gen6 schedule changes the engine oil, filter and drain plug gasket every 500 hours. It says always do a stationary DPF regeneration before you change the oil.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Engine oil110W-40 Deutz engine oil, ≈16 L (dealer pack 79036470B). Aztec Oils match: EMPROTEC XHPD 10W-40check your handbook
Engine oil filter1F836200510080
Oil drain plug gasket1F731200510060
Step-by-step
  1. Run a stationary DPF regeneration from the terminal first, as the dealer schedule says, and let it finish.
  2. Park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  3. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, and the exhaust and DPF are very hot after a regeneration. Wear gloves.
  4. Remove the sump drain plug and let the oil drain fully.
  5. Remove the oil filter, check the old seal came off, and wipe the filter head clean.
  6. Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight.
  7. Fit a new gasket to the drain plug, refit it and fill with 10W-40 to the full mark.
  8. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (25 L), Filter wrench, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel, Rags, Gloves

Fuel pre-filter (water separator) change

Fuel · every 500 hours

The dealer schedule changes the fuel pre-filter every 500 hours and drains water from it at every service, including the 50-hour one. Water in the diesel ruins common-rail injectors.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Fuel pre-filter1F842201060010
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around the pre-filter so dirt cannot get in.
  3. Drain any water into a container, then remove the old filter.
  4. Fit the new filter with a clean, oiled seal, hand-tight.
  5. Prime the system as your handbook describes. Never crack open the high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves

Cab fresh air filter

Cab · every 500 hours

The dealer schedule replaces the cab fresh air filter every 500 hours. Dusty work may need it sooner.

Tools: Screwdriver, Dust mask

Main fuel filters change

Fuel · every 1,000 hours

The dealer schedule changes the main fuel filters every 1,000 hours. It lists two filters and says most later serial numbers take 72666152, so check your serial number before ordering.

  2. Clean around both filter housings before opening anything.
  3. Remove the old filters into a container and check the old seals came off.
  4. Fit the new filters with new seals.
  5. Prime the system as your handbook describes. Never crack open the high-pressure pipes.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves

Engine air filter, primary (outer) element

Engine · every 1,000 hours

The dealer schedule replaces the primary air filter every 1,000 hours. In between, it checks the maintenance code and cleans the filter, and replaces it sooner if needed.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine with the filter out.
  2. Open the air cleaner housing and take out the outer element. Leave the inner element in place.
  3. Wipe the housing out with a damp cloth. Do not blow dirt down the intake.
  4. Fit the new element, check it seats evenly and close the housing.
  5. Check the intake hoses and clips for leaks and clear the filter warning on the terminal if needed.

Tools: Torch, Damp cloth

AdBlue (DEF) supply pump filter and tank sensor pre-filter

Exhaust · every 1,000 hours

The dealer schedule changes the AdBlue filter and the AdBlue sensor pre-filter in the tank every 1,000 hours. Blocked AdBlue filters cause dosing faults and engine power cuts.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Wait for the AdBlue system to finish purging after shutdown before you open anything.
  2. Clean around the pump filter cap. AdBlue crystals and dirt must not get into the system.
  3. Remove the cap and the old filter, catching the AdBlue in a container.
  4. Fit the new filter and refit the cap to the torque in your handbook.
  5. For the tank sensor pre-filter, remove the sensor unit from the tank as your handbook shows, change the filter, clip and O-ring, and refit it.
  6. Rinse any spilt AdBlue off with water; it corrodes metal and electrical connectors.

Tools: Filter cap spanner for the AdBlue pump, Container, Clean water, Gloves, Eye protection

Vario transmission pressure filter (filter only)

Transmission · every 1,000 hours

The dealer schedule changes the transmission pressure filter at 50 hours and every 1,000 hours, more often than the oil (2,000 hours). So this is a filter-only task between oil changes.

  3. Clean around the filter, remove it and catch the oil.
  4. Fit the new filter with a new O-ring.
  5. Run the engine, check for leaks and top up the transmission oil to the mark.

Tools: Drain tray, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves

Engine · every 2,000 hours

The dealer schedule checks the valve clearance every 2,000 hours, and Farmers Weekly says check and adjust the 6.1-litre engine's tappets every 2,000 hours. The clearance figures were not in these sources: check your handbook.

Step-by-step
  1. Only work on a cold engine. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Remove the valve cover and turn the engine to each setting position your handbook shows.
  3. Check each clearance with feeler gauges and adjust to the handbook figure.
  4. Refit the cover with a new gasket and check for oil leaks after starting.

Tools: Feeler gauges, Spanners, Engine turning tool

Diesel particulate filter (DPF): stationary regeneration and dealer checks

Exhaust · when needed

The dealer schedule says always do a stationary regeneration before each engine oil change. No source we read gave an ash-cleaning or replacement interval for the DPF, so check your handbook and ask your dealer.

Step-by-step
  1. Park outside, away from straw, dust and anything that burns. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Start a stationary regeneration from the terminal and leave the tractor running until it finishes.
  3. Never work near the exhaust or DPF until they have cooled; they run very hot during and after a regeneration.
  4. Get the dealer to look at any DPF or AdBlue warning that comes back.

Tools: Terminal (FendtONE) regeneration menu

Cab activated carbon filter (where fitted)

Cab · when needed

Some 724 Gen6 tractors have an activated carbon cab filter for spraying work. No source we read gave its part number or change interval, so check your handbook.

Known problems

Regenerate before an oil change

The dealer schedule says always do a stationary DPF regeneration before changing the engine oil.

Wrong oil in the wrong tank

The Vario transmission and hydraulics have separate tanks with different capacities. Check which filler you are using.

Injector copper sleeve leaks

Farmers Weekly says on the 6.1-litre engine, coolant that drops while running and recovers when stopped, or a fuel cap blown off by pressure, points to leaking injector sleeves. Seals are about £1,200 a set plus about 15 hours' labour.

ML 180 Vario wear

Rattles and burnt-smelling oil on the dipstick are warning signs. A reconditioned cartridge is about £14,000. Worn input shafts give similar rattles and cost less to fix.

Viscous fan bearing

Farmers Weekly says check the fan for play about every 1,000 hours; a worn bearing can let the blades come off.

Fuel filter part change by serial

The dealer notes most later serial numbers take fuel filter 72666152 instead of the earlier pair. Check your serial number before ordering.

Repair guides

The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your tractor.
