Service jobs and parts

Drain water from fuel filters

Fuel · every 50 hours

Water in diesel rusts the injection pump and injectors. The handbook says drain the rear filter (where fitted) and then the front filter every 50 hours.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Open the drain plug on the rear filter (where fitted) until clean fuel shows. Close it.
  3. Repeat on the front filter.
  4. If a lot of fuel came out, bleed the system as in the fuel filter task.

Tools: Small container, Rags

Oil-bath air cleaner: clean cups

Engine · every 50 hours

The handbook says check the oil and dirt level daily (clean it if more than 6 mm of dirt has settled) and drain and clean both cups every 50 hours. In heavy dust or chaff, service both bowls twice a day.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Engine oil for the cups1SAE 10W or 20W and others (see the handbook chart). Same grade as the engine, to the level mark. Aztec Oils match: EMPROTEC SDX 10Wcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Remove the cups, tip out the old oil and dirt, and clean both cups.
  3. Clean the dirt off the mesh screen in the base of the air cleaner body.
  4. Refill both cups to the level mark with engine oil. Do not overfill.
  5. Refit the cups securely.

Tools: Drain tray, Paraffin or parts cleaner, Rags

Clutch pedal free travel check

Clutch · every 50 hours

The handbook says check clutch pedal free travel at the 50-hour service. Too little free travel makes the clutch slip and wear.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out, lower implements and chock the wheels.
  2. Measure how far the pedal moves before the clutch starts to work.
  3. Compare with the figure in your handbook (Section G); check your handbook, as the 5000 figure was not readable in the source.
  4. Adjust as the handbook shows and lock the nut.

Tools: Spanners, Rule

Grease points (50-hour list)

Chassis · every 50 hours

The handbook gives a model-specific list of grease points every 50 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1Good-quality grease; high-temperature lithium grease for the clutch release bearing greasercheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Wipe each nipple, grease until old grease is pushed out, and wipe off the surplus.
  3. Ford 5000 points: front wheel spindles; brake pedal pivots; clutch pedal pivots; lift linkage rods and levelling box; steering centre pivot (power steering models); automatic pick-up hitch locking latch.
  4. Clutch release bearing greaser (where fitted): turn the cap down half a turn every 50 hours, or a full turn on continuous loader work.

Tools: High-pressure grease gun, Rags

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 300 hours

The handbook gives 300 hours for the oil and the filter with low-sulphur fuel (under 1%), and 150 hours below -12 °C or with high-sulphur fuel. Modern road and red diesel is low-sulphur.

Step-by-step
  1. Run the engine up to working temperature, then park on level ground, lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Remove the sump drain plug and let the hot oil drain fully. Wear gloves; hot oil burns. Refit the plug.
  3. Clean around the filter so dirt cannot fall in, then remove the old filter (or canister element) and its sealing ring.
  4. Smear clean oil on the new filter's seal and fit it hand-tight (or fit the new element with a new sealing ring).
  5. Refill to the upper mark on the dipstick.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks, stop it, wait 15 minutes and recheck the dipstick.

Tools: Drain tray (10 L), Spanner for sump plug, Filter wrench, Funnel, Rags, Gloves

Injection pump oil change (in-line pump)

Fuel · every 300 hours

The handbook lists a fuel pump service at 300 hours for the Ford 3000 and 5000 only, which have the in-line pump with its own oil. It is easily forgotten.

  4. Wash the bowl and filter body in clean fuel.
  5. Fit a new element and new sealing rings, and refit the bowl.
  6. Turn the fuel on and bleed: slacken the filter bleed screws and use the lift pump priming lever until fuel comes out with no air, then tighten.
  7. Bleed the injection pump, then slacken the injector pipe nuts and crank until bubble-free fuel flows from each. Tighten them.

Tools: Spanners, Clean brush, Clean fuel for washing, Container, Rags

Oil-bath air cleaner: full strip and wash

Engine · every 600 hours

The handbook lists the oil-bath air cleaner as a 600-hour job, so the inner mesh is washed as well as the cups.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Check with the engine cold.
  2. Remove the rocker cover.
  3. Turn the engine to top dead centre on No. 1 firing stroke (firing order 1-3-4-2).
  4. Check the valves your handbook lists for this position: inlet 0.36–0.41 mm, exhaust 0.43–0.48 mm.
  5. Turn the engine one full turn and check the rest.

Tools: Feeler gauges, Ring spanner and screwdriver, Bar to turn the engine

Gearbox oil change

Transmission · every 1,200 hours or every year

The gearbox has its own oil, separate from the rear axle. The handbook says drain it hot and refill to the dipstick mark on the 5000 every 1,200 hours or once a year.

PartQtyNotesPart number

  2. Let very hot oil cool to warm before opening the plugs. Wear gloves.
  3. Remove the drain plug, let all the oil drain and refit the plug.
  4. Fill with the specified oil to the dipstick mark.

Tools: Drain tray (15 L), Spanners, Funnel or pump

Rear axle and hydraulic oil change (with hydraulic filters)

Hydraulics · every 1,200 hours or every year

The rear axle oil also feeds the hydraulic lift. The handbook says change it every 1,200 hours or once a year, and says a Ford dealer should inspect the inlet and exhaust hydraulic filters every 2,400 hours (every other oil change) and replace if needed. Steve's rule is to deal with them at every change.

  2. With the engine off, move the lift and spool levers to relieve trapped hydraulic pressure before undoing any plug.
  3. Let hot oil cool to warm. Remove the drain plug and let the oil drain, then refit it.
  4. If you are changing the hydraulic filters, follow your handbook or have a dealer do it.
  5. Fill with new oil to the level plug hole.
  6. Start the engine, raise the lift arms fully and extend any external rams, then top up again.
  7. Lower the arms before leaving the tractor.

  2. Drain the radiator and block, and dispose of the old coolant properly.
  3. Flush with clean water.
  4. Refill with 50% antifreeze and 50% water.
  5. Run the engine to warm up, let it cool fully and top up.

Known problems

In-line pump oil forgotten

The 5000's in-line injection pump has its own oil, changed every 300 hours. It is easy to miss.

Select-O-Speed gearbox

Owners report Select-O-Speed 5000s losing drive in all gears, for example from a broken input spline, with repairs costing more than the tractor. Test every gear under load.

PTO faults

PTO problems are a common owner complaint on the 5000. The PTO brake changed from a pad to a band type on 1 June 1973, so check which you have before buying parts.

Steering cylinder and front bolster

Owners say early 5000 steering cylinders are hard to find, and advise checking the front bolster for cracks, especially on loader tractors.

Head gasket

Owners advise warming the engine fully and watching the radiator: a steady stream of bubbles points to a head gasket fault.

Repair guides

The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your tractor.
