Oil-bath air cleaner: change oil and clean gauze

Engine · every 50 hours

The handbook says check the air cleaner oil daily and renew it every 50 hours, cleaning the lower gauze and the pre-cleaner at the same time. In dust, check it several times a day.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Engine oil1SAE 30 or 20 or 10. To the shoulder in the base, ≈0.57 L. Aztec Oils match: EMPROTEC SDX 30check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine. Never run it with the air cleaner base off: the pneumatic governor works from the inlet and the engine could overspeed.
  2. Release the clamp and remove the base and lower gauze.
  3. Tip out the old oil and sludge, wash the base and gauze in paraffin and dry them.
  4. Clear the vanes under the pre-cleaner and the two slots in its dome.
  5. Refill the base with clean engine oil to the level of the shoulder and refit with the gauze. Tighten the ring clamp.

Tools: Drain tray, Paraffin, Brush, Rags

Grease all points (50-hour list)

Chassis · every 50 hours

The Dexta lubrication schedule greases all grease points and tops up the battery every 50 hours, and greases the steering linkage daily.

Known problems

Never run with the air cleaner base off

The pneumatic governor works off the inlet manifold. With the air cleaner base off the governor cannot control the engine and it can overspeed.

Galvanised fuel tanks

The handbook warns that zinc from a galvanised storage tank reacts with diesel and damages the injection equipment. Use a plain steel tank or drums.

Uneven brakes

Using one brake for steering wears it faster, and the tractor pulls to one side when the pedals are locked together. Keep both adjusted and lock the pedals for road work.

Positive earth

The Dexta is positive earth. Connect the battery positive terminal to the earth strap.
