Oil-bath air cleaner: change oil

Engine · every 50 hours

The book says check the air cleaner oil level daily and renew the oil every 50 working hours, cleaning the filter gauze and checking the pre-cleaner at the same time. In very dusty work check it several times a day.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Engine oil1SAE 30 or 20 or 10. To the level mark in the bowl. Aztec Oils match: EMPROTEC SDX 30check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine.
  2. Remove the oil bowl, tip out the old oil and dirt and clean the bowl.
  3. Remove and thoroughly clean the filter gauze.
  4. Check the domed pre-cleaner top and clear any blocked vanes or slots.
  5. Refill the bowl to the level mark with engine oil and refit everything.

Tools: Drain tray, Paraffin, Rags

Clutch and brake pedal free play

Clutch · every 50 hours

The servicing schedule says check clutch and brake pedal free play every 50 hours. Too little clutch free play causes slip and release bearing wear.

Step-by-step
  1. Clutch: free travel should be 1.5–2 in (38–51 mm). Loosen the operating rod clevis locknut, remove the clevis pin, move the clevis along the rod to set the travel, refit and lock.
  2. Double clutch: remove the stop pin, engage the PTO and check it stops when the pedal is fully down; shorten the rod if not. Refit the stop pin and check gears change without clutch spin.
  3. Brakes (housings cold): slacken the lock nut under one brake housing, tighten the adjusting screw until the brake locks, back it off 1.5 turns and lock it.
  4. Disconnect the return spring, set the pull rod nut until the pedal just touches its upper stop, then slacken 1.5 turns to give 1.5 in (38 mm) free travel. Reconnect the spring and do the other side.
  5. Test that both brakes act evenly.

Tools: Spanners, Rule

Grease and lubrication points (50-hour list)

Chassis · every 50 hours

The servicing schedule gives these 50-hour items for the Super Major, alongside the daily steering linkage greasing and clutch bearing greaser.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1Chassis grease; lithium high-melting-point grease for the clutch greasercheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Grease the steering gear upper bearing, rear wheel bearings, front wheel bearings, clutch and brake cross-shaft and the levelling box.
  2. Check the gearbox and rear axle oil levels and the power steering oil level (if fitted).
  3. Check tyre pressures and the battery electrolyte level.
  4. Heavy-duty clutch only: screw the release bearing greaser cap down one turn every day and refill it with lithium high-melting-point grease, not chassis grease.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags

Engine oil and filter element change

Engine · every 200 hours

The servicing schedule says change the engine oil and renew the filter element every 200 hours. The full-flow filter element must be changed no later than every 200 working hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number

  2. Drain the sump oil while warm, then refit the plug.
  3. Remove the filter bowl on the right-hand side of the engine, discard the element, clean the bowl and fit a new element and seal.
  4. Refill to the FULL mark on the dipstick (left-hand side of the engine) with heavy-duty oil of the right grade.
  5. Run the engine, check the oil warning light goes out and there are no leaks, then stop and recheck the level.

Crankcase breather and governor air filter

Engine · every 200 hours

The book says change the crankcase breather oil every 200 hours (more often in dust) and rinse its gauze in paraffin, and wash, lightly oil and refit the governor air filter capsule every 200 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Tools: Paraffin and tray, Rags

Fan belt free play

Engine · every 200 hours

The book says check the fan belt every 200 hours; total movement over 1/2 in (1.27 cm) needs adjusting. A slipping belt causes overheating.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Fan belt1SPA1132 belt (also E1ADKN8620)81718146
Step-by-step
  1. Check the total movement of the belt; it should not exceed 1/2 in (1.27 cm).
  2. To adjust, slacken the generator mounting bolts, move the generator away from the block and tighten the bolts securely.
  3. Also oil the generator rear bearing (200-hour item) and check the chaff screens are clear.

Tools: Spanners, Rule

Steering box level and steering arm bolts

Steering · every 200 hours

The book says the steering box oil never needs changing, but check and top up the level every 200 hours, and check the steering arm clamping bolts at the same interval.

  2. Remove the element and clean the container with a brush and clean fuel. Do not use a rag or touch it with dirty hands.
  3. Fit the new element and a new rubber sealing ring. Tighten the centre bolt with a short spanner and moderate pressure only.
  4. Bleed the fuel system at the filter inlet, filter outlet and injection pump bleed screws until fuel flows free of air.

Tools: Short spanner, Brush and clean fuel, Container

Injectors: remove for testing and servicing

  2. Remove the rocker cover to air cleaner pipe. If a decompressor is fitted, put the lever down, remove its screw and withdraw the lever and flange.
  3. Remove the six screws and lift off the rocker cover and gasket.
  4. Turn the engine until No. 1 valve (from the front) is fully closed and check the gap between the valve rotator cap and rocker: inlet 0.015 in (0.38 mm), exhaust 0.012 in (0.30 mm).

Tools: Feeler gauges, Ring spanner, Screwdriver

Gearbox oil change

Transmission · every 1,000 hours or every 6 months

Known problems

Separate gearbox and rear axle oils

The gearbox and rear axle have separate oils on different intervals (6 months/1,000 hours and 12 months/2,000 hours). Check and change both.

Blocked gearbox breather

The left-hand fuel tank bracket bolt on the gearbox is drilled as a breather. Check it is clear from time to time.

Air cleaner neglect

The oil-bath air cleaner needs its oil changed every 50 hours, more often in dust. A blocked cleaner costs power and fuel and wears the engine.

Non-pressurised cooling

Standard tractors have an unpressurised system, so check the water at least twice a day in hard work. Pressure caps of 4 or 7 psi were fitted for hot climates; never open one hot.
