Service jobs and parts

Grease PTO shaft cross journals (every 8 hours)

PTO shaft · every 8 hours

Hardi's table gives 8 hours for the cross journals (point 2A) and 40 hours for the sliding tubes. Dry crosses wear quickly and can seize.

Step-by-step
  1. Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine and take the key out. Wait until the shaft has stopped turning.
  2. Grease the nipple on each cross journal until fresh grease shows at the seals.
  3. Check the guard tubes turn freely and the chains are fitted with some slack for turns.
  4. Never touch or stand on a turning shaft: Hardi says keep 1.5 m away.

Tools: Grease gun

Oil the operating unit (every 20 hours)

Controls · every 20 hours

Hardi's table marks the BK/EC and EC operating unit moving parts (point 3) for oil every 20 hours.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the tractor engine, take the key out and switch off the control box.
  2. Wear chemical-resistant gloves. Wipe the operating unit clean.
  3. Put a drop of oil on the points shown in the book (valve spindles and linkages of the operating unit).
  4. Wipe off surplus. Wash your gloves before taking them off and wash your hands.

Tools: Oil can, Rags

Grease all points (every 40 hours)

Lubrication · every 40 hours

Hardi's lubrication table for the MASTER-HYB gives 40 hours for the pump, the PTO shaft sliding tubes, the boom lift and fold pivots, the transport brackets and the boom centre. Use lithium No. 2 grease, and grease everything after pressure washing or spraying fertiliser.

Step-by-step
  1. Lower the boom into its transport brackets or onto stands, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and wait for the shaft to stop.
  2. Wear chemical-resistant gloves: the grease nipples will have spray residue on them. Wipe each nipple clean before greasing.
  3. Pump: grease the crankshaft nipple(s) on the diaphragm pump (point 1 in the book).
  4. PTO shaft: grease the sliding tubes (point 2B). The cross journals are on their own 8-hour task.
  5. Boom: grease the lift frame and slide points, the fold pivots, the trapeze and the breakaway pivots (points 4, 5 and 6).
  6. Wipe off surplus grease so it does not collect grit. Wash your gloves before taking them off and wash your hands.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags

Inspect PTO shaft guards (every 40 hours)

PTO shaft · every 40 hours

Hardi says inspect the shaft protection guards every 40 hours, and at 1,000 hours check them and replace the nylon guard bearings. A shaft without guards can kill.

PartQtyNotesPart number
PTO guard nylon bearings2At 1,000 hours. Genuine Hardi; number not found: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine and take the key out. Wait until the shaft has stopped turning.
  2. Check the guard tubes and cones are not split or dented and that they turn freely on the shaft.
  3. Check both anti-rotation chains are fitted and their anchor points are sound.
  4. Check the push pins or quick-release collars are clean, greased and lock fully.
  5. At 1,000 hours, take the guards off (bolt, lock and grease nipple, twist the cover a quarter turn), fit new nylon bearings and check the crosses for play.
  6. Do not use the sprayer with a damaged guard. Use genuine Hardi parts.

Tools: Screwdriver, Grease gun

Off-season storage and frost protection

Storage · every year

Hardi's off-season list: clean out all chemical, check hoses, touch up paint, protect the control box, and if the sprayer is not stored frost-free, fill the whole system with anti-freeze. Ice will split the pump, valves and gauge.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Anti-freeze1At least 10 L of 33% mixturecheck your handbook
Touch-up paint1check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection. Clean the sprayer fully as in the cleaning task: no chemical residue may be left in the tank.
  2. Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine and take the key out whenever you are working round the pump or shaft.
  3. Check every hose for chafing, sharp bends and leaks; change any you have doubts about.
  4. Remove rust and touch up paint where chemicals have attacked it.
  5. Grease all points. Clean and grease the PTO shaft push pins.
  6. If it will not be stored frost-free: put at least 10 litres of 33% anti-freeze in the tank and run the pump for a few minutes so the whole system, including the spray lines, is filled.
  7. Remove the glycerine-filled pressure gauge and store it frost-free, upright.
  8. Put the control box and multiplug in a plastic bag against damp and dirt.
  9. Wash gloves before taking them off and wash your hands.

Tools: Bucket, Plastic bags for the control box and multiplug, Wire brush, Grease gun

Sprayer test (NSTS)

Legal · every 3 years

UK law (Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations 2012, reg. 11) says a boom sprayer over 3 m used professionally must pass an inspection before it is 5 years old and at least every 3 years after that. The 12 m and 15 m HYB boom is covered.

Step-by-step
  1. Book a test at an NSTS test centre (nsts.org.uk lists them) before the current certificate runs out. Many centres will test on the farm.
  2. Wear the PPE the last chemical label asked for: at least chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection. Wash the gloves before you take them off and wash your hands afterwards.
  3. Clean the sprayer inside and out first: testers will turn away a dirty sprayer. Rinse the tank, filters and nozzles as in the cleaning task.
  4. Check the PTO shaft guards are complete and the chains are fitted, and that there are no leaks, split hoses or dripping nozzles.
  5. Check the pressure gauge works and that the nozzles are all the same type and size.
  6. Keep the certificate and fix the test sticker where it can be seen. Put the next due date in the diary.

Tools: Pressure washer, Bucket and nozzle brush, PPE as the last chemical label says

Clean the sprayer and filters after each job

Spray system · when needed

Hardi says clean the sprayer straight after use. Clean filters protect the pump valves and diaphragms, and a blocked suction filter makes the pump cavitate. Do this after every spraying job; there is no fixed hour interval.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Detergent or deactivating agent1As the chemical label says, e.g. washing sodacheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Wear the PPE the chemical label asks for. Work on a soakaway or in the field just sprayed, well away from drains and watercourses.
  2. Dilute what is left in the tank with at least 10 parts water and spray it out on the crop just treated, at higher speed and lower pressure.
  3. Rinse the outside of the sprayer and tractor.
  4. Stop the pump. Take out the suction filter (pull the steel clip, lift the hose fitting, lift out the guide and filter) and the pressure and in-line filters, and clean them without damaging the mesh.
  5. With the pump running, rinse the inside of the tank, including the roof, and work every valve.
  6. Fill at least a fifth of the tank with clean water and the detergent or deactivating agent. Run it through every valve, leaving the boom valves until last.
  7. Drain the tank and let the pump run dry. Rinse again and let it run dry again.
  8. Take out and clean the nozzles and filters if the product tends to block them. Refit everything.
  9. Wash gloves before taking them off and wash your hands and face. Store the sprayer with the lid open if the solvents are aggressive.

Tools: Clean water supply, Bucket, Soft nozzle brush, Chemical-resistant gloves, Eye protection

Pump valves and diaphragms

Pump · when needed

Hardi gives no fixed interval: change valves and diaphragms when the pump loses output, sucks air or liquid comes from the drain hole under the pump (a split diaphragm). If liquid reached the crankcase, re-grease the pump thoroughly.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Diaphragm (membrane), 1302 pump1Per diaphragm; count on your pump. Hardi number from a parts dealer listing; confirm with your dealer33511300
Valve cover gaskets1Hardi recommends new gaskets whenever the valves are checked; number: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Diaphragms and valves, 361 pump1Check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Clean and rinse the sprayer first. Wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection: the pump will hold spray liquid.
  2. Raise the boom with the hydraulic lift and secure it with the S-hook supplied with the sprayer. Never service the pump under an unsecured boom.
  3. Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and wait for the shaft to stop.
  4. Remove the valve covers. Note which way each valve faces before taking it out (the 361 has one special valve with a white flap in a set position).
  5. Remove the diaphragm covers and change the diaphragms.
  6. If liquid has reached the crankcase, re-grease the pump thoroughly. Check the drain hole under the pump is clear.
  7. Refit with new gaskets. Torque: 1302 valve cover 60 Nm, diaphragm cover 60 Nm; 361 valve cover 70 Nm, diaphragm cover 70 Nm; diaphragm bolt 60 Nm.
  8. Test with clean water for leaks before adding chemical. Wash gloves and hands.

Tools: Spanners and sockets, Torque wrench (to 70 Nm), S-hook supplied with the sprayer, Chemical-resistant gloves, Eye protection

Known problems

Air leaks on the suction side

Hardi lists a leaking suction filter O-ring, loose suction fittings or a badly assembled diaphragm cover as the usual causes of no spray or low pressure.

Liquid from the pump drain hole

Means a split diaphragm. Stop and change it before spray reaches the crankcase bearings.

Worn nozzles

Hardi says replace nozzles whose output is more than 10% above the chart. Check with a jug and stopwatch at the start of each season.

Boom drifts or yaws

A trapeze set too loose lets the boom swing back and forth and spoils the pattern. The book gives the order for re-adjusting the boom after the first few days.
