Service jobs and parts

SPB boom breakaway clutch (Navigator 3000-4000)

Boom · every 8 hours

From the Navigator 3000/3500/4000 book: lubricate the clutch every 8 hours, and torque the clutch bolts to 40 ft·lb (55 Nm) every 40 hours to prevent boom damage. The breakaway should release at 18 lb (80 N) at the boom tip. I could not find the same text in the 3100-6200 book, so check your handbook for that range.

PartQtyNotesPart number
NLGI 2 lithium grease1NLGI 2 lithium grease. Slide-bearing moly grease where the plan shows it. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Grease the breakaway clutch.
  2. Every 40 hours, check the clutch bolts are at 40 ft·lb (55 Nm).
  3. To change the breakaway force, slacken the jam nut, tighten the adjusting nut to stiffen the clutch, then retighten the jam nut. Grease the clutch before adjusting.

Tools: Grease gun, Torque wrench (55 Nm), Spring balance

Filters: clean (EasyClean, CycloneFilter, in-line, nozzle)

Spray circuit · every 10 hours

HARDI says clean the main filter every 10 hours even if the clogging indicator does not show. A blocked suction filter starves the pump.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Filter element (EasyClean / CycloneFilter / in-line / nozzle)1Only if torn. Mesh choices: 30, 50, 80 or 100 mesh. Part number: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Grease for O-rings1Grease the filter lid O-rings on reassemblycheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Wear gloves and protective clothing.
  2. CycloneFilter: turn the pressure SmartValve to an unused function or to the tank cleaning nozzles first, then unscrew the lid. If you do not, spray liquid can hit you.
  3. EasyClean: turn the lid anticlockwise, lift out the filter, turn the locks outwards to separate it from the lid, and clean it and the housing.
  4. In-line filters: unscrew the filter bowl and clean the filter. Nozzle filters sit inside the nozzles; check and clean them.
  5. Grease the O-rings before reassembly and make sure the filter catches its guide.
  6. Close the lid fully. Fill with clean water, operate all functions and check for leaks at higher pressure than normal. Look at the nozzle spray patterns with clean water.

Tools: Soft brush, Gloves and protective clothing, Clean water

Pump: grease every 50 hours

Pump · every 50 hours

For the 364 / 464 pumps HARDI says the pump must be greased every 50 hours with 1 oz (30 g) in each lubrication point, using the HARDI pump grease. For the older 363 / 463 pumps the Navigator 3000 book gives no 50-hour pump grease figure in the text I could read, so check your handbook.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Pump grease1Complex lithium NLGI 1 grease, over 460 cSt at 40 degrees C (Shell Gadus S3 V550L 1, Mobilgrease XHP 462 or Total Multis Complex SHD 460 are listed)28164600
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the pump. It must never be greased while running.
  2. Calibrate your grease gun: pump 10 full strokes onto paper, weigh it and divide by 10 to find the grease per stroke.
  3. Clean the nipples. Nipple head is DIN 71412, 6.5 mm.
  4. Give each pump lubrication point 1 oz (30 g) of grease.
  5. After dismantling the pump for a diaphragm job, give each lubrication point 7 oz (200 g) instead.

Tools: Grease gun (calibrated, see steps), Scales or kitchen paper, Rags

PTO shaft: guards and lubrication

Drive · every 50 hours

HARDI says every 50 hours check the guard and lubricate the shaft as the plan and the shaft maker's book say. The protection tube nylon bearings are changed at 1,000 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Protection tube nylon bearings1Change at 1,000 hours as the shaft maker's book describes. Part number: check your handbookcheck your handbook
NLGI 2 lithium grease1NLGI 2 lithium grease for ball bearings. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Check that the guard and chains are whole and working. Replace any damaged part.
  2. Grease the shaft at the points shown in the lubrication plan and on the shaft's own label.
  3. At 1,000 hours, change the protection tube nylon bearings as the shaft maker describes.

Tools: Grease gun, Shaft maker's instruction book

Wheel nuts and tyre pressure

Wheels · every 50 hours

HARDI lists both at 50 hours. Over-inflated tyres can burst, so never go above the pressure in the table.

Step-by-step
  1. Tighten the wheel nuts in the numbered sequence to 250 ft·lb (340 Nm).
  2. Set tyre pressures from the table in your instruction book. 3100-6200 examples: 320/90 R46 single wheel 36 to 52 psi, 380/90 R46 22 to 48 psi, depending on model.
  3. Never inflate above the table figure.

Tools: Torque wrench (up to 340 Nm), Tyre gauge, Wheel chocks

Hydraulic circuit, hoses and tubes

Hydraulics · every 250 hours

HARDI says every 250 hours check the circuit for leaks and the hoses and tubes for damage. Boom-lift hoses are changed after every 5 years of use. ParaLift accumulators are refilled with nitrogen.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Boom lifting hoses1Change every 5 years. Part number: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Look over the whole hydraulic circuit for leaks and repair any.
  2. Check every hose and tube for damage and secure fitting. Replace damaged ones.
  3. Hoses for the boom lifting device must be replaced after 5 years of use.
  4. Accumulators (ParaLift) may be refilled with nitrogen. They can hold oil under pressure, so take the pressure off first.

Tools: Spanners, Torch, Gloves and eye protection

Wheel bearings: check play (250 h) and repack (1,000 h)

Axle · every 250 hours

HARDI lists a play check at 250 hours and a full strip, clean, regrease and new seal at 1,000 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Wheel bearing grease1Fresh wheel bearing grease for repacking and the hub cap. Grade not given: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Hub seal1New seal on every repack. Part number: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Split pin1New pin each timecheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Chock the other wheel, jack the sprayer up and support it on axle stands. Never rely on the jack alone.
  2. At 250 hours: rock the wheel to feel for play. If there is play, remove the hub cap and split pin, tighten the castle nut until there is slight resistance, then back off to the first notch that lines up with the pin hole. Fit a new split pin and the hub cap.
  3. At 1,000 hours: remove the wheel, hub cap, split pin and nut, pull the hub, take out the bearings, clean them and replace if worn.
  4. Pack the bearings with fresh grease, fit a new seal and refit. Set the nut as above, fit a new split pin, fill the hub cap with fresh grease and refit it.
  5. If you are not confident, have your HARDI dealer do it.

Tools: Jack and axle stands, Wheel chocks, Spanners, Wheel puller, Degreaser

Boom lift wear bushings (Navigator 3100-6200)

Boom · every year

HARDI says inspect the wear bushings on the boom lift and replace them before they wear through.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Boom lift wear bushing1Part number: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Connect to the tractor and unfold the boom to working position.
  2. Lift the boom centre frame and support it until the load is off the parallelogram arms.
  3. Take out the screws and pins on the upper arms, replace the bushings, and refit.
  4. Do the same on the lower arms, then grease every nipple.

Tools: Lifting gear, Spanners, Grease gun

Season-end lay-up (off-season storage programme)

Whole machine · every year

This is HARDI's own 16-point list for putting the sprayer away. Residues left in the system shorten the life of the pump, valves and seals.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Anti-freeze1About 50 L of mix: 1/3 automotive antifreeze to 2/3 watercheck your handbook
Anti-corrosion oil1Shell Ensis Fluid or Castrol Rustilo or similar. Keep it off rubber, hoses and tyrescheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Clean the sprayer fully inside and out, flush all valves, hoses and extras with clean water so no chemical is left.
  2. Replace damaged seals and repair leaks. Empty the sprayer, run the pump a few minutes and drain the rinse tank, running until air comes out of all nozzles.
  3. Pour in about 50 L of antifreeze mix (1/3 antifreeze, 2/3 water). With the pump running, operate every valve, the operating unit and chemical inductor, and spray it through the nozzles. A FlexCapacity pump must also be run.
  4. Lubricate every lubrication point at the intervals in the plan. Touch up paint chips.
  5. Take off the glycerine pressure gauges and store them upright out of frost.
  6. Wipe a thin film of anti-corrosion oil over metal parts, not rubber.
  7. Fold the boom to transport position and release hydraulic pressure. Store plugs in dry bags, take the control box and display off the tractor and keep them indoors, and put dust caps on the couplers.
  8. Grease any ram rods not fully retracted. Chock the wheels so the tyres are not distorted and cover the sprayer with a tarpaulin that lets air circulate.

Tools: Water and detergent, Grease gun, Plastic bags for plugs, Tarpaulin

Pre-season start-up after storage and test reminder

Whole machine · every year

HARDI's start-up list after storage. HARDI also notes that national or regional laws may require periodic inspection of sprayers in use. In the UK, check the date of your NSTS sprayer test certificate and book the test if it is due.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Teflon tape1To seal the pressure gauges when refittedcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Take off the tarpaulin and remove the supports from under the axle. Set the tyre pressure.
  2. Wipe the grease off the hydraulic ram rods. Refit the pressure gauges using Teflon tape.
  3. Connect to the tractor, hydraulics and electrics, and check all hydraulic and electric functions.
  4. Empty the leftover antifreeze from the tank, rinse the whole circuit with clean water, then fill with clean water and check every function.
  5. Check the date of your sprayer test certificate and book the test if it is due.

Tools: Water, Tyre gauge, Rags

Pump valves and diaphragms: overhaul

Pump · when needed

HARDI says replacement intervals depend too much on how the sprayer is used to give a figure. Replace all valves and diaphragms together. Do the job before the season starts or when a diaphragm is damaged.

Pump grease1Complex lithium NLGI 1. Re-grease the pump with 7 oz (200 g) per point after reassembly28164600
Step-by-step
  1. Buy the kit for your pump model. Look at the pump plate.
  2. 364 / 464: pull off the plastic covers, undo the 4 head bolts and take off each head. Note the valve positions, then change the valves, using new gaskets.
  3. Undo the diaphragm bolt and washer, change the diaphragm, check the drain hole at the bottom of the pump is clear, and put a little pump grease between the diaphragm and the connecting rod washer.
  4. Turn the crankshaft so each diaphragm is between centre and top of its stroke before tightening the head bolts. If it is at the bottom of its stroke the edge will not seal and the diaphragm is ruined.
  5. 364 / 464 torque: head bolts 67 ft·lb (90 Nm), diaphragm bolt 67 ft·lb (90 Nm). Use Loctite 262 on the diaphragm bolt of 1000 rpm pumps.
  6. 363 / 463 torque (Navigator 3000 book): 463 diaphragm cover 65 ft·lb (90 Nm) and diaphragm bolt 60 ft·lb (80 Nm); 363 diaphragm cover 50 ft·lb (70 Nm) and bolt 45 ft·lb (60 Nm). 1303: valve cover 45 ft·lb (60 Nm), diaphragm cover 50 ft·lb (70 Nm), diaphragm bolt 45 ft·lb (60 Nm).
  7. If liquid has reached the crankcase, re-grease the pump thoroughly. Refit the covers.

Tools: Torque wrench (up to 100 Nm), Sockets, Lifting eye and tackle (pump about 75 kg), Grease gun

Safety valve exercise and drain valve seal

Spray circuit · when needed

HARDI says to open the safety valve on purpose from time to time so it does not clog, and gives the drain valve seal job if the tank drain valve leaks.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Drain valve seal and seat1Only if the valve leaks. Part number: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. With the pump running, turn the pressure SmartValve to an unused function (or TurboFiller without using it) so the safety valve opens briefly.
  2. If the main tank drain valve leaks: empty and clean the tank, close the valve, pull out the clip, pull down the connecting piece and take the valve assembly out from underneath. Never go inside the tank.
  3. Replace the seal and fit a new valve seat, lubricate the O-rings and refit the clip. Test with clean water before filling with chemicals.

Known problems

Pump grease only

Use the HARDI pump grease (part 28164600) or a listed equivalent. HARDI warns that other grease causes excess wear.

Never grease a running pump

The pump must be stopped while you grease it.

Diaphragm position

Tightening the head with the diaphragm at the bottom of its stroke permanently damages the diaphragm edge.

Two ranges in one entry

The 3100/3800/4500/6200 book (2017) and the 3000/3500/4000 book (2010) differ on pump models and the boom clutch. Where the text did not match I have said so and left the figure out.
