Service jobs and parts

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 100 hours or every year

Honda's schedule says replace the engine oil and filter at the first service (20 hours or 150 km) and then every 100 operating hours or 1,000 km. The maintenance minder shows it. Change more often in very dusty work.

Filter cover and crankcase O-rings2Genuine 54x2.4 mm oil filter cover O-ring for Pioneer 500 (SXS500M) 2016 (per Elliott Bros fiche); smaller cover O-rings 91303-HA0-004, 91307-KF0-003 also on the fiche; 520 and other years not checked91302-KF0-003
Drain plug sealing washer1Genuine 12 mm drain-plug washer for Pioneer 500 (SXS500M) 2016 (per Elliott Bros fiche); 520 and other years not checked94109-12000
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, set the parking brake, jack up and support the vehicle. Take off the seat bottom and fold back the rubber dust cover on the left, and take out the oil filler cap/dipstick.
  2. Put a drain pan under the crankcase and take out the drain plug and sealing washer.
  3. To reach the filter, remove the seat back and centre rear panel, then the clips and screws on the right seat bottom cover and flip it forward (leave the ECU and wiring in place).
  4. Undo the filter cover bolts, let the oil drain, throw away the filter and coat new O-rings with engine oil. Fit the spring, then the new filter with the rubber seal facing out (the filter is marked OUT-SIDE toward the cover). Fitted the wrong way round it can wreck the engine.
  5. Refit the cover and tighten the bolts to 12 N·m. Refit the right seat cover screws to 8 N·m.
  6. Refit the drain plug with a new washer at 25 N·m, lower the vehicle and fill with about 3.0 L.
  7. Idle for 3–5 minutes, stop, wait 2–3 minutes and check the dipstick (resting in the hole, not screwed in) is between the marks. Check for leaks.

Tools: Drain pan (5 L), Socket set, Torque wrench (8–30 N·m), Axle stands, Funnel, Gloves

Air cleaner (foam) clean and oil

Engine · every 100 hours or every year

Honda's schedule says clean the air cleaner element every 100 hours or 1,000 km, and more often in dust, sand or snow. A dirty or torn element lets dirt into the engine.

Tools: Spark plug spanner (tool kit), Wire feeler gauge, Wire brush

Valve clearance inspection

Engine · every 100 hours or every year

Honda's schedule lists valve clearance inspection at the first service and then every 100 hours or 1,000 km, otherwise adjust only if noisy. Honda marks it as a job for the dealer or a person with the service manual.
