Engine oil and filter change

Honda says replace the engine oil and filter at the first 20 hours (or 1 month), then every 100 hours, 1,000 km or 12 months. The oil also serves the transmission.

Step-by-step

Park level, remove the front seat and the maintenance lid under the body.
Remove the drain plug and drain the oil.
Remove the right rubber dust cover, then the oil filter bolt and cover, and let the rest drain. Keep the spring and washer.
Fit new oiled O-rings to the filter bolt and cover, put in a new filter and tighten the filter bolt to 18 N·m.
Fit a new sealing washer and O-ring to the drain plug and tighten it to 25 N·m. Refit the maintenance lid at 12 N·m.
Fill with about 2.9 L, idle 3–5 minutes, stop, wait 2–3 minutes and check between the dipstick marks.

Air cleaner clean

Engine · every 100 hours

Honda says clean the foam air cleaner and check the housing drain tube every 100 hours or 1,000 km, more often in dust, sand, snow or wet.

Step-by-step

Lift the cargo bed (on the 700-4 remove the rear centre cover), unclip and remove the housing cover.
Loosen the screw and lift out the assembly, undo the clamp and take the foam off its body.
Wash it gently in a high flash point solvent (not petrol) and squeeze it out. Do not twist or wring it.
Replace it if torn. Oil it as your handbook says, refit and check the drain tube.

Spark plug check

Honda says check the spark plug every 100 hours or 1,000 km.

Step-by-step

With the engine cold, remove the plug.
Check it, set the gap to 0.8–0.9 mm or fit a new one, and refit it.

Step-by-step

Let the exhaust cool fully.
Remove the spark arrester, brush off the carbon and refit the bolts at 12 N·m.

Valve clearance check

Honda says inspect the valve clearance at the first 20 hours, then every 100 hours or 1,000 km, adjusting only if noisy. Dealer job unless you have the service data.

Fuel lines and connections check

Honda says check the fuel lines and connections every 200 hours or 2,000 km (dealer job unless you have the service data).

Look along the fuel lines for cracks, chafing or leaks at the joints and have any fault fixed.

Brake check

Brakes · every 300 hours

Honda says check the front and rear brakes at 20 hours and every 300 hours or 3,000 km (more often in mud), check the fluid level monthly and replace the brake fluid every 2 years.

Check the fluid level and look for leaks.
Look at pad wear through the calipers and replace in axle sets if worn.

Front and rear final gear oil change

Transmission · every 2 years

Honda says check the front and rear final gear oil at 20 hours and then every 300 hours or 3,000 km, and replace both every 2 years regardless of hours.

Step-by-step

Warm the gears with a run and park level.
Remove the filler cap and drain plug from each case and drain.
Refit the drain plugs with new sealing washers at 12 N·m.
Fill the front with 665 ml and the rear with 140 ml to the lower edge of the inspection hole. Fit greased new O-rings and tighten the caps to 12 N·m.

Coolant change

Cooling · every 2 years

Honda says replace the engine coolant every 2 years regardless of hours, and check the level at each fuel stop.

Known problems

Oil serves the gearbox too

The Pioneer 700's automatic transmission shares the engine oil, so use the right JASO MA oil and keep to the 100-hour change.

Underbody checks

Honda says check the underbody whenever the under guard has been hit.

Repair guides

Brake pad wear and fluid level (Moderate, 20 minutes to check): Continuous metallic scraping from the front when braking, rear pad wear indicator at the mark, fluid at or below MIN, or a spongy pedal.
Transmission not shifting or vehicle will not move: MIL and emergency valve (Specialist, 10 minutes to get it moving; dealer to repair): PGM-FI warning lamp on with the gear position indicator blinking, gears not changing, or the engine runs but the Pioneer will not move.
Starter will not work or engine will not start: fuses and battery (Easy, 20–45 minutes): Nothing on the key, starter turns slowly, starter works but the engine will not fire, or lights and accessories dead.
High coolant/oil temperature light on (Easy, 30 minutes): Temperature gauge up to H with the warning light on, steam from the engine bay, or the fan not running.
Driveshaft and ball joint boots, and changing a wheel (Easy, 20 minutes to check; 30 minutes per wheel): Split boots or grease splattered round a wheel, clicking from a driveshaft, or a flat tyre to change.
