Service jobs and parts
Air cleaner (foam) clean and oil
Engine · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda says clean the foam air cleaner every 1,000 km or 100 hours, and more often in dust, sand or snow. The TRX250 Recon manual adds 6 months. The TRX250 sub air cleaner is cleaned at 1,000 km and replaced at 2,000 km by the dealer.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air cleaner element (foam) | 1 | Genuine for TRX300FW 1999 (per Elliott Bros fiche); TRX250 Recon is a different element | 17254-HC5-900 |
| Foam filter oil | 1 | Pro Honda foam filter oil or equal | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine, take the key out and remove the seat to reach the air cleaner case.
- Take out the screws and lift out the air cleaner assembly. Undo the clamp and bracket and slide the foam off its frame.
- Wash the foam gently in non-flammable solvent such as paraffin, never petrol. Squeeze it out; do not twist it.
- Replace it if it is torn. Let it dry fully, then work foam filter oil through it inside a plastic bag and squeeze out the excess.
- Refit the foam, clamp and bracket, put the assembly back and refit the screws and seat.
Tools: Screwdriver, Bowl of high-flash-point solvent (such as paraffin), Plastic bag, Gloves
Air cleaner housing drain tube check
Engine · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda says inspect the drain tube every 1,000 km or 100 hours, and more often after riding through water. If you can see deposits in it, clean it before starting the engine.
Step-by-step
- With the engine off, find the drain tube under the air cleaner case.
- If you can see water or dirt in it, remove the clip and pull the tube off.
- Drain the deposits, refit the tube and secure it with the clip.
Tools: Pliers for the clip
Spark plug inspection
Engine · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says inspect the plug every 1,000 km or 100 hours.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spark plug | 1 | NGK DPR8EA-9 or Denso X24EPR-U9, gap 0.8–0.9 mm | DPR8EA-9 |
Step-by-step
- Let the engine cool and clean dirt from round the plug before taking off the cap.
- Unscrew the plug and look at the electrodes. Replace it if fouled, worn or cracked.
- Set the gap to 0.8–0.9 mm by bending the side electrode only.
- Screw it in by hand first, then tighten as the handbook says, and refit the cap.
Tools: Plug spanner (in the tool kit), Wire-type feeler gauge, Wire brush
Valve clearance check
Engine · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says check the valve clearance at 150 km and then every 1,000 km or 100 hours. It is marked as a dealer job unless you have the tools and service manual.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |

Step-by-step
- Only check with the engine cold.
- Follow the Honda service manual to take off the tappet covers and set the piston at top dead centre on the compression stroke.
- Check the gaps: TRX300FW 0.15 mm; TRX250 Recon 0.13 mm inlet and exhaust.
- Adjust if needed, recheck, and refit the covers. Otherwise have your dealer do it.
Tools: Feeler gauges, Spanners and adjusting tool, Service manual
Clutch adjustment
Transmission · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule lists the clutch system for inspection at 150 km and then every 1,000 km or 100 hours. A clutch that is out of adjustment slips or drags.
Step-by-step
- Make sure the ignition is off and the engine is cool.
- Loosen the lock nut on the clutch adjuster on the right crankcase cover.
- Turn the adjuster anticlockwise until you feel slight resistance, then turn it back 1/4 turn clockwise.
- Hold it there and tighten the lock nut. Test ride to check the clutch works properly. If it will not adjust, the plates may be worn: see your dealer.
Tools: Spanner for the lock nut, Flat screwdriver
Spark arrester clean
Exhaust · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says clean the spark arrester every 1,000 km or 100 hours.
Step-by-step
- Let the exhaust cool fully.
- Follow the handbook to clean out the spark arrester, and refit everything securely.
- If you are unsure, have your dealer do it.

Front gear case, rear final gear and differential oil change
Transmission · every 1,000 km or every 2 years
Honda's schedule says inspect the gear oils every 1,000 km and 2,000 km and replace them every 2 years. The TRX250 Recon has only the rear final gear case.

Step-by-step
- Change the oil warm, with the quad on level ground.
- For each case, put the tray under it and remove the filler cap and drain plug.
- When it has drained, refit the drain plug at 12 N·m.
- Front gear case (TRX300FW): fill with 190 ml of 10W-40 engine oil, then take out the level check bolt and make sure oil reaches the level hole.
- Rear final gear: fill with the stated amount until oil reaches the lower edge of the inspection hole (TRX250: until it reaches the level check hole).
- Front differential (TRX300FW): fill with 190 ml until oil reaches the lower edge of the inspection hole.
- Refit the filler caps and level bolts and check for leaks.
Tools: Drain tray, Socket set, Torque wrench (12 N·m), Oil pump or squeeze bottle
Engine oil and filter change
Engine · every 1,000 km
Honda's TRX300FW schedule says replace the engine oil and filter at 150 km (20 hours) and then every 1,000 km (600 mi) or 100 hours. The schedule gives no months, so do it at least yearly if you use the quad little. The TRX250 Recon has no paper filter: its oil is changed every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 12 months, and its centrifugal filter is cleaned by the dealer every 2,000 km.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 1 | TRX300FW: SAE 10W-40, ≈2.2 L. TRX250: 10W-30 JASO MA, 1.5 L. Aztec Oils match: MOTOTEC ENDURANCE 10W-40 | check your handbook |
| Oil filter (cartridge, TRX300FW) | 1 | Genuine Honda oil filter element for TRX300FW FourTrax 1999 (per Elliott Bros fiche); other years may differ | 15412-HM5-A10 |
| Drain plug sealing washer | 1 | Genuine 12 mm drain-plug washer for TRX300FW 1999 (per Elliott Bros fiche); other years may differ | 94109-12000 |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, stop the engine and take the key out. Change the oil while the engine is warm, but take care: oil and exhaust are hot.
- Take out the filler cap/dipstick on the right crankcase cover, put the tray under the engine and remove the drain plug.
- TRX300FW: undo the bolts and take off the oil filter cover. Let the last oil run out and throw the old filter away.
- Check the cover O-rings. Fit the new filter with its rubber seal facing out, away from the engine. It is marked OUTSIDE (TOWARDS FILTER COVER). Fitted the wrong way it can wreck the engine.
- Refit the cover and tighten the bolts to 10 N·m.
- Refit the drain plug with a good washer at 25 N·m.
- Fill with about 2.2 L (TRX300FW) or 1.5 L (TRX250) of the right oil and refit the dipstick.
- Idle for a few minutes, stop, wait and check the level with the dipstick resting in, not screwed in. Top up to between the marks; do not overfill.
- Take the old oil to a proper disposal point.
Tools: Drain tray (4 L), Socket set, Torque wrench (10–25 N·m), Funnel, Shop towels, Gloves
Brake shoe wear and brake adjustment
Brakes · every 2,000 km
Honda's schedule says check brake shoe wear every 2,000 km or 200 hours, and the brake system at each service. On the TRX300FW the front drum linings are 4.0 mm new with a service limit of 1.0 mm.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brake shoes | 0 | Genuine front shoe set for TRX300FW 1999 (per Elliott Bros fiche); rear shoe set 06430-HM5-A80; other years may differ | 06450-HN0-A00 |
Step-by-step
- With the quad on level ground, pull out the inspection hole plug on each front brake drum.
- Measure the lining thickness. If either lining is worn to 1.0 mm or less, have both shoes replaced by your dealer.
- If the lever free play is too great but the linings are fine, adjust the brake lining clearance as the handbook shows.
- Refit the inspection plugs so they seat fully. Check the rear brake and parking brake work properly.
Tools: Pliers or screwdriver for the inspection plugs, Steel rule

Known problems
Filter fitted backwards
The TRX300FW cartridge filter must have its rubber seal facing out, towards the cover. Fitted the other way it starves the engine of oil.
Two very different machines
The TRX250 Recon is a two-wheel-drive quad with no paper oil filter and no front gear case. Check which one you have before buying parts.
Repair guides
- Front drum brakes: lever free play, lining wear and adjustment (Easy, 30–45 minutes): Front brake lever comes too close to the bar, weak front brakes, one side grabbing, brake fluid level near the LOWER mark.
- Rear drum brake: pedal and lever free play, shoe wear and water in the drum (Easy, 20–40 minutes): Rear brake pedal or left lever travels too far, parking brake won't hold, weak rear brake after wading, brake arm arrow near the reference mark.
- Clutch adjustment and reverse lock cable (Easy, 20 minutes): Harsh or creeping take-off, clutch slipping, gear changes clunky, reverse hard to select or the reverse assist lever slack.
- Misfire, hard starting or tappety engine: spark plug and valve clearance (Moderate, 20 minutes for the plug; 1–2 hours for valve clearances): Hard starting, misfire, loss of power, plug fouled or burnt, ticking from the top of the engine.
- Engine starves or stutters: cleaning the fuel strainer screen (Easy, 20 minutes): Engine runs fine at idle but starves or cuts out under load, dies after a while and restarts after resting, dirt seen in the fuel cup.
