Service jobs and parts
Air cleaner (foam) clean and oil
Engine · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says clean the foam air cleaner every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months, and more often in dust, sand or snow. Dirt that gets past it wears the engine quickly.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air cleaner element (foam) | 1 | Replace if torn. 2014-on number from Honda dealer listing; 2007–2013 models are listed by sellers as 17254-HP5-600, so check your handbook | 17254-HN1-000 |
| Foam filter oil | 1 | Honda foam filter oil or equal | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine, take the key out and remove the seat.
- Unclip the air cleaner housing cover, slacken the screw and lift out the air cleaner assembly.
- Remove the clamp and slide the foam off its frame.
- Wash it gently in non-flammable solvent such as paraffin, never petrol. Squeeze it out; do not twist or wring it, or the foam tears.
- Check for tears or split seams and replace it if damaged.
- Let it dry fully, then work foam filter oil evenly through it inside a plastic bag and squeeze out the excess.
- Refit it to the frame, put a thin coat of grease on the sealing face, refit the clamp and put the assembly back in the housing. Tighten the screw and refit the cover so its cut-out fits the tab.
- Check the breather dust cover at the same time and clean it if dirty.
Tools: Bowl of non-flammable high-flash-point solvent (such as paraffin), Plastic bag, Gloves, Grease, Screwdriver
Air cleaner housing drain tube check
Engine · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says inspect the drain tube every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months, and more often after riding through water or mud. If deposits can be seen in the tube it must be cleaned before starting.
Step-by-step
- With the engine off, find the clear drain tube under the air cleaner housing.
- If you can see water or dirt in it, release the clip and pull the tube off.
- Drain the deposits, refit the tube and secure it with the clip.
- If there was a lot of water, check the air cleaner too.
Tools: Pliers for the clip, Rag
Spark plug inspection
Engine · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says inspect the plug every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months. A worn or fouled plug causes hard starting and misfires.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spark plug | 1 | NGK BKR5E-11 or Denso K16PR-U11, gap 1.00–1.10 mm | BKR5E-11 |
Step-by-step
- Let the engine cool, take the key out and remove the seat and tank cover.
- Clean dirt from around the plug, pull off the cap by the cap (not the lead) and unscrew the plug.
- Look at the electrodes. Replace the plug if it is heavily fouled, worn or the insulator is cracked.
- Check the gap with a wire feeler gauge: 1.00–1.10 mm. Bend only the side electrode to adjust.
- Screw the plug in by hand to avoid cross-threading. A used plug: 1/8 turn after it seats. A new plug: NGK 3/4 turn or Denso 1/2 turn after it seats, loosen, then 1/8 turn after it seats again.
- Refit the cap, tank cover and seat.
Tools: Plug spanner (in the tool kit), Wire-type feeler gauge, Wire brush
Valve clearance check
Engine · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says inspect the valve clearance at 150 km, 20 hours or 1 month and then every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months. Honda marks it as a dealer job unless you have the tools and service data.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valve cover gasket/seals | 1 | Genuine Honda, TRX420FM1 (from 2017, fiche undated), per Elliott Bros OEM fiche. Other years may differ: check your model year. Listed as head cover gasket. | 12315-HR0-F01 |
Step-by-step
- Only check with the engine cold. Take the key out.
- Follow the Honda service manual to remove the covers and set the piston at top dead centre on the compression stroke.
- Check the gaps with feeler gauges: inlet 0.15 mm, exhaust 0.23 mm.
- Adjust if needed as the service manual describes, then recheck.
- If you do not have the service manual and tools, have your dealer do it.
Tools: Feeler gauges, Spanners and adjusting tool, Socket set, Service manual
Brake fluid, pads and rear drum check
Brakes · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says inspect the brake fluid every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months and replace it every 2 years, and check pad and shoe wear every 2,000 km, 200 hours or 12 months (more often in mud and water). Honda marks brake work as a dealer job.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brake fluid | 1 | DOT 4. Honda DOT 4, fresh from a sealed container. Aztec Oils match: HYDRATEC DOT 4 BF | check your handbook |
| Front brake pads | 1 | Genuine Honda, TRX420FM1 (from 2017, fiche undated), per Elliott Bros OEM fiche. Other years may differ: check your model year. Pad set, front. | 06435-HP7-A01 |
| Rear drum brake drain bolt washer | 1 | Genuine Honda, TRX420FM1 (from 2017, fiche undated), per Elliott Bros OEM fiche. Other years may differ: check your model year. 8 mm gasket with sealing bolt 90109-371-000 on the rear brake panel page. | 90471-580-000 |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, engine off, parking brake on.
- Check the front brake fluid is between the marks in the reservoir window. A falling level usually means worn pads or a leak.
- Look at the pad wear indicators on both front calipers. Replace both pads on both sides if the indicator reaches the edge of the reference mark.
- Rear drum: apply the brake fully and check the arrow on the brake arm. If it lines up with the reference mark on the brake panel, the shoes need replacing.
- After wet work, remove the drain bolt under the rear brake panel. If water comes out, the brake seals need replacing by your dealer. Refit the bolt with a new washer at 12 N·m.
- Check hoses for cracks and leaks. Brake fluid damages paint and plastics, so wipe up spills at once.
- Every 2 years have the brake fluid replaced.
Tools: Torch, Rag, Torque wrench (12 N·m), Small spanner
Drive shaft and yoke boot inspection
Drivetrain · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says inspect the drivetrain boots every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months. A split boot lets mud and water into the joint and it soon fails.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive shaft boot | 1 | Genuine Honda, TRX420FM1 (from 2017, fiche undated), per Elliott Bros OEM fiche. Other years may differ: check your model year. Boot set (outer) / inboard boot set. | 44240-HR3-A22 / 44230-HR3-A22 |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, engine off, key out, parking brake on.
- Check the propeller shaft boots and the yoke joint boot for cuts, damage or leaking grease.
- On 4x4 models, check the front driveshaft boots at both ends of each shaft, turning the steering to see all round them.
- Have any split boot replaced by your dealer before the joint is damaged.
Tools: Torch, Rag
Engine oil and filter change
Engine · every 1,000 km or every year
Honda's schedule says replace the oil and filter every 1,000 km (600 mi), 100 operating hours or 12 months, whichever comes first, after a first change at 150 km, 20 hours or 1 month. The engine oil also lubricates the clutch, so use motorcycle (JASO MA) oil.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 1 | SAE 10W-30 JASO MA, ≈2.7 L with filter. Aztec Oils match: AGRITEC LAWNMOWER 10W-30 | check your handbook |
| Oil filter (cartridge) | 1 | Fits 2007–2019 TRX420 (Honda dealer listing) | 15412-HM5-A10 |
| Filter cover O-ring | 1 | Manual says fit new O-rings to the cover and crankcase cover; dealer kit lists one | 91302-KF0-003 |
| Drain bolt sealing washer | 1 | 94109-12000 |
Step-by-step
- Park on firm level ground, select neutral, set the parking brake, stop the engine and take the key out.
- Ride or idle the quad briefly so the oil is warm, then stop it. Hot oil and exhaust burn, so wear gloves.
- Take out the oil filler cap/dipstick, put the tray under the engine and remove the drain bolt and its sealing washer.
- Take off the seat and tank cover, put towels under the filter cover on the right of the engine, undo the cover bolts and take off the cover. Let the last oil drain and throw the old filter away.
- Oil the new O-rings and fit them. Put the spring back on the crankcase and fit the new filter with its rubber seal facing out, towards the cover. The filter is marked OUTSIDE (TOWARDS FILTER COVER). Fitted the wrong way round it can wreck the engine.
- Refit the cover and tighten the bolts to 10 N·m. Refit the drain bolt with a new washer at 25 N·m.
- Fill with about 2.7 L of 10W-30 JASO MA oil and refit the dipstick.
- Start the engine and idle for 3–5 minutes, stop it, wait 2–3 minutes and check the level is between the marks with the dipstick resting in, not screwed in. Check for leaks and refit the tank cover and seat.
- Take the old oil to a proper disposal point.
Tools: Drain tray (5 L), Socket set, Torque wrench (10–25 N·m), Funnel, Shop towels, Gloves
Front and rear final gear oil change
Transmission · every 2 years
Honda's schedule says inspect the final gear oil every 2,000 km, 200 hours or 12 months and replace it every 2 years. Water gets into the gear cases on wet, muddy farm work, so check it is not milky between changes.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hypoid gear oil SAE 80W-90 | 1 | Rear 85 ml; front (4x4 models) 210 ml. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-4 80W-90 | check your handbook |
| Drain bolt sealing washers | 2 | Genuine Honda, TRX420FM1 (from 2017, fiche undated), per Elliott Bros OEM fiche. Other years may differ: check your model year. Listed as 8 mm gasket on the front and rear final gear pages; used with the 8 mm sealing drain bolt 90109-371-000. | 90471-580-000 |
| Fill cap O-rings | 2 | check your handbook | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Ride the quad first so the gear oil is warm, then park on firm level ground, set the parking brake and take the key out.
- Rear: put the tray under the case, remove the fill cap and the drain bolt, and let it drain. Refit the drain bolt with a new washer at 12 N·m.
- Rear: remove the level check bolt, then fill slowly until oil starts to run out of the check hole (about 85 ml). Wait 2–3 minutes. Refit the check bolt with a new washer and the fill cap with a greased new O-ring, both at 12 N·m.
- Front (4x4): remove the fill cap and drain bolt, drain, refit the drain bolt with a new washer at 12 N·m.
- Front: fill with about 210 ml to the lower edge of the fill inspection hole, then refit the fill cap with a greased new O-ring at 12 N·m.
- Look at the old oil. Milky oil means water has got in; have the seals checked.
Tools: Small drain tray, Socket set, Torque wrench (12 N·m), Oil syringe or squeeze bottle, Grease
Coolant replacement
Cooling · every 2 years
Honda's schedule says replace the coolant every 2 years and inspect it every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months. Old coolant stops protecting the aluminium engine against corrosion and frost.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coolant | 1 | Honda HP coolant or ethylene-glycol antifreeze for aluminium engines, 50/50 with distilled water, ≈1.6 L | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Work only on a cold engine. Never take the radiator cap off hot: coolant can spray out and scald you.
- Honda says coolant replacement needs the service manual; if you do not have it, have your dealer do the drain and bleed.
- Mix antifreeze 50/50 with distilled water only (not tap water). Do not go below 40% or above 60% antifreeze.
- For top-ups, always add to the reserve tank up to the UPPER mark, not through the radiator cap.
- Clean mud from the radiator core with low-pressure water only. Pressure washing damages the fins. Have it checked if more than 20% of the core is blocked.
- Coolant is poisonous to animals: catch it all and dispose of it properly.
Tools: Drain tray, Funnel, Antifreeze tester, Soft brush and low-pressure hose for the radiator

Known problems
Oil filter fitted the wrong way round
The cartridge filter must go in with its rubber seal facing out towards the cover (it is marked OUTSIDE). Honda warns that fitting it wrongly can cause serious engine damage.
Water in the rear drum brake
The sealed rear drum has a drain bolt. If water comes out after wet work, the brake seals have failed and need replacing.
Water in the air box
Riding through water or deep mud fills the air cleaner housing drain tube. Check it and drain it before starting, or water can be drawn into the engine.
Electric shift (ESP) faults
Owners of FE models report gear changes failing or the gear display blanking, often traced to the shift angle sensor or water in its connector. Cleaning and greasing the connector sometimes cures it.
Wrong oil makes the clutch slip
The engine oil also lubricates the clutch. Use JASO MA motorcycle oil, not car oil marked energy conserving.
Repair guides
- Oil filter fitted the wrong way round: check and put right (Easy, 45 minutes): Oil warning or rattling valve gear soon after an oil change, engine running hot, or you are simply not sure which way the cartridge went in last time.
- Water in the sealed rear drum brake: drain, reseal and overhaul (Hard, 3–4 hours): Water runs out of the rear brake drain bolt after wet work, the rear brake grabs or fades, the parking brake will not hold, or the wear indicator has reached its limit.
- Water, petrol or oil in the air box: drain and dry before starting (Easy, 30–60 minutes): Liquid or dirt visible in the air box drain tube or check hose after wading or deep mud, engine misfiring or stalling after water, or a soaked foam element.
- Clutch slip from the wrong engine oil (Honda) (Easy, 1 hour): Engine revs rise but the quad does not pull, especially on hills or with a trailer; slip got worse after an oil change or an oil additive.
- Electric shift (ES / ESP) will not change gear (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Pressing the shift buttons does nothing, gear changes are missed, the gear display flashes or goes blank, or the fault came on after washing or wading.
- Brake fluid change and brake hose replacement (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Dark fluid in the reservoir, spongy lever or pedal, hoses cracked or swollen, or no record of a fluid change in the last 2 years.
- Front CV boots and drive shafts (TRX420 4x4) (Hard, 2–3 hours per side): Split boot throwing grease, clicking from a front wheel when turning on full lock, or knocking from a drive shaft.
- Wheel bearing check and replacement (Moderate, 1.5–3 hours per wheel): Wheel rocks top to bottom when gripped, rumble or growl that changes on turns, uneven tyre wear or a hub running hot.
- Ball joints, tie-rod ends and toe setting (Moderate, 1–2 hours per side): Steering wander or knock over bumps, play when you rock a front wheel side to side, split rubber boots on the joints, or front tyres scrubbing.
- Disc brake pads, discs and caliper slide pins (Moderate, 1–2 hours per axle): Grinding or squeal, pads down to the wear grooves, lever travel growing, brake pulling to one side, or a caliper sticking and the wheel running hot.
- Will not crank or cranks slowly: battery, connections and starter motor (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Click and nothing, slow cranking, starter spins without turning the engine, or starting only works on the recoil.
- Recoil starter rope and spring repair (Moderate, 1–1.5 hours): Rope snapped or frayed, rope will not rewind, or the pulley spins without turning the engine.
- Overheating: cooling fan, radiator and cap (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Temperature warning light, coolant boiling into the reserve tank, fan not running when hot, or (TRX350) oil running hot with the oil cooler fan silent.
- Valve clearance check and adjustment (screw and lock nut rockers) (Moderate, 1.5–2.5 hours): Ticking from the top end, hard hot starting, loss of compression or power, or the check is due on the maintenance chart.
- Front and rear final gear oil leaks and seals (Honda) (Hard, 1 hour for oil; 3–6 hours for a seal): Oil weeping at a drive shaft, the propeller shaft joint or the rear axle; milky gear oil after wet work; whine or knock from a gear case.
- Winch will not pull, runs one way only, or runs weak (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Nothing happens at the switch, the winch only runs in or only out, motor hums but the drum does not turn, slow line speed, or the winch got soaked.
The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your quad.
