Air cleaner (foam) clean and oil
Engine · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says clean the foam air cleaner every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months, and more often in dust, sand or snow.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air cleaner element (foam) | 1 | Replace if torn. Dealer lists 17254-HN1-000 for TRX500 from about 2010; earlier models are listed by sellers as 17254-HP0-A00, so check your handbook | 17254-HN1-000 |
| Foam filter oil | 1 | Honda foam filter oil or equal | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine, take the key out and remove the seat.
- Unclip the housing cover, slacken the screw and lift out the air cleaner assembly.
- Remove the clamp and slide the foam off its frame.
- Wash it gently in non-flammable solvent, never petrol. Squeeze it out without twisting or wringing.
- Replace it if the foam or seams are torn.
- When dry, work foam filter oil evenly through it inside a plastic bag and squeeze out the excess.
- Refit to the frame, grease the sealing face lightly, refit the clamp and put the assembly back. Refit the cover.
Tools: Bowl of non-flammable high-flash-point solvent (such as paraffin), Plastic bag, Gloves, Grease, Screwdriver
Air cleaner housing drain tube check
Engine · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says inspect the drain tube every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months, and more often after riding through water or mud.
Step-by-step
- With the engine off, find the drain tube under the air cleaner housing.
- If you can see deposits or water in it, release the clip, pull it off and drain it.
- Refit the tube and clip before starting the engine.
Tools: Pliers for the clip, Rag
Spark plug inspection
Engine · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says inspect the plug every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spark plug | 1 | NGK BKR5E-11 or Denso K16PR-U11, gap 1.00–1.10 mm | BKR5E-11 |
Step-by-step
- Let the engine cool, take the key out and remove the seat and tank cover.
- Clean around the plug base, pull off the cap carefully and unscrew the plug.
- Replace the plug if it is heavily fouled, worn or cracked.
- Set the gap to 1.00–1.10 mm with a wire feeler gauge, bending only the side electrode.
- Screw it in by hand, then tighten as the handbook says (a used plug 1/8 turn after seating).
- Refit the cap, tank cover and seat.
Tools: Plug spanner (in the tool kit), Wire-type feeler gauge, Wire brush
Valve clearance check
Engine · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says inspect the valve clearance at 150 km, 20 hours or 1 month and then every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months. It is a dealer job unless you have the service manual and tools.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valve cover gasket/seals | 1 | Genuine Honda, TRX500FM2 (2014), per Elliott Bros OEM fiche. Other years may differ: check your model year. Listed as head cover gasket. | 12315-HR0-F01 |
Step-by-step
- Only check with the engine cold. Take the key out.
- Follow the Honda service manual to remove the covers and set the piston at top dead centre on the compression stroke.
- Check the gaps: inlet 0.15 mm, exhaust 0.23 mm.
- Adjust if needed as the service manual describes, then recheck. Otherwise have your dealer do it.
Tools: Feeler gauges, Spanners and adjusting tool, Socket set, Service manual
Brake fluid, pads and rear drum check
Brakes · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says inspect the brake fluid every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months and replace it every 2 years, and check pad and shoe wear every 2,000 km, 200 hours or 12 months (more often in mud and water).
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brake fluid | 1 | DOT 4. Honda DOT 4, fresh from a sealed container. Aztec Oils match: HYDRATEC DOT 4 BF | check your handbook |
| Front brake pads | 1 | Genuine Honda, TRX500FM2 (2014), per Elliott Bros OEM fiche. Other years may differ: check your model year. Pad set, front. Earlier 2005–2013 models not checked. | 06435-HP7-A01 |
| Rear drum brake drain bolt washer | 1 | Genuine Honda, TRX500FM2 (2014), per Elliott Bros OEM fiche. Other years may differ: check your model year. 8 mm gasket with sealing bolt 90109-371-000. | 90471-580-000 |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, engine off, parking brake on.
- Check the front brake fluid level is between the marks. A falling level means worn pads or a leak.
- Check the pad wear indicators on both front calipers and replace both pads on both sides if worn to the mark.
- Rear drum: apply the brake fully. If the arrow on the brake arm lines up with the reference mark, the shoes need replacing.
- After wet work, remove the rear brake drain bolt. If water comes out, have the brake seals replaced. Refit the bolt with a new washer at 12 N·m.
- Have the brake fluid replaced every 2 years.
Tools: Torch, Rag, Torque wrench (12 N·m)
Drive shaft and yoke boot inspection
Drivetrain · every 1,000 km or every 6 months
Honda's schedule says inspect the drivetrain boots every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|

Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, engine off, key out.
- Check the propeller shaft boots, the yoke joint boot and both ends of each front driveshaft for cuts, damage or leaking grease.
- Have any split boot replaced by your dealer before the joint wears.
Tools: Torch, Rag
Engine oil and filter change
Engine · every 1,000 km or every year
Honda's schedule says replace the oil and filter every 1,000 km (600 mi), 100 operating hours or 12 months, whichever comes first, after a first change at 150 km, 20 hours or 1 month. The oil also lubricates the clutch, so use motorcycle (JASO MA) oil.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 1 | SAE 10W-30 JASO MA, ≈3.0 L with filter. Aztec Oils match: AGRITEC LAWNMOWER 10W-30 | check your handbook |
| Oil filter (cartridge) | 1 | Fits TRX500FE 2005–2019 (Honda dealer listing) | 15412-HM5-A10 |
| Filter cover O-ring | 1 | Manual says fit new O-rings to the cover and crankcase cover; dealer kit lists one | 91302-KF0-003 |
| Drain bolt sealing washer | 1 | 94109-12000 |
Step-by-step
- Park on firm level ground, select neutral, set the parking brake, stop the engine and take the key out.
- Warm the engine briefly so the oil drains well. Hot oil and exhaust burn, so wear gloves.
- Take out the dipstick, put the tray under the engine and remove the drain bolt and sealing washer.
- Take off the seat and tank cover, put towels under the filter cover on the right side, undo the bolts and take the cover off. Let the last oil drain and throw the old filter away.
- Oil the new O-rings and fit them. Put the spring back and fit the new filter with the rubber seal facing out, towards the cover (marked OUT-SIDE). Fitted the wrong way round it can wreck the engine.
- Refit the cover with the bolts at 10 N·m, and the drain bolt with a new washer at 25 N·m.
- Fill with about 3.0 L of 10W-30 JASO MA oil and refit the dipstick.
- Idle for 3–5 minutes, stop, wait 2–3 minutes and check the level is between the marks. Check for leaks and refit the tank cover and seat.
- Take the old oil to a proper disposal point.
Tools: Drain tray (5 L), Socket set, Torque wrench (10–25 N·m), Funnel, Shop towels, Gloves
Front and rear final gear oil change
Transmission · every 2 years
Honda's schedule says inspect the final gear oil every 2,000 km, 200 hours or 12 months and replace it every 2 years. Check for milky oil after wading.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|

- Rear: remove the fill cap and drain bolt and drain. Refit the drain bolt with a new washer at 12 N·m.
- Rear: remove the level check bolt and fill slowly until oil runs from the check hole (about 85 ml). Wait 2–3 minutes, then refit the check bolt and the fill cap with new seals at 12 N·m.
- Front: remove the fill cap and drain bolt, drain, and refit the drain bolt with a new washer at 12 N·m.
- Front: fill with about 325 ml to the lower edge of the fill hole and refit the cap with a greased new O-ring at 12 N·m.
- Milky old oil means water is getting in: have the seals checked.
Tools: Small drain tray, Socket set, Torque wrench (12 N·m), Oil syringe or squeeze bottle, Grease
Coolant replacement
Cooling · every 2 years
Honda's schedule says replace the coolant every 2 years and inspect it every 1,000 km, 100 hours or 6 months.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coolant | 1 | Honda HP coolant or ethylene-glycol antifreeze for aluminium engines, 50/50 with distilled water, ≈1.6 L | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Work only on a cold engine. Never open the radiator cap hot.
- Honda says replacement needs the service manual; otherwise have your dealer drain and bleed the system.
- Mix 50/50 with distilled water only. Top up through the reserve tank to the UPPER mark.
- Wash mud off the radiator with low-pressure water only.
- Catch and dispose of old coolant properly; it is poisonous to animals.
Tools: Drain tray, Funnel, Antifreeze tester, Soft brush and low-pressure hose

Known problems
Oil filter fitted the wrong way round
The cartridge filter must go in with its rubber seal facing out towards the cover (marked OUT-SIDE). Honda warns that fitting it wrongly can cause serious engine damage.
Water in the rear drum brake
The sealed rear drum has a drain bolt. Water coming out means the brake seals have failed.
Water in the air box
After wading, check and drain the air cleaner housing drain tube before starting.
Electric shift (ESP) faults
On FE models, failed gear changes are often traced to the shift angle sensor or water in its connector.
Wrong oil makes the clutch slip
The engine oil also lubricates the clutch. Use JASO MA motorcycle oil, not energy-conserving car oil.
Repair guides
- Oil filter fitted the wrong way round: check and put right (Easy, 45 minutes): Oil warning or rattling valve gear soon after an oil change, engine running hot, or you are simply not sure which way the cartridge went in last time.
- Water in the sealed rear drum brake: drain, reseal and overhaul (Hard, 3–4 hours): Water runs out of the rear brake drain bolt after wet work, the rear brake grabs or fades, the parking brake will not hold, or the wear indicator has reached its limit.
- Water, petrol or oil in the air box: drain and dry before starting (Easy, 30–60 minutes): Liquid or dirt visible in the air box drain tube or check hose after wading or deep mud, engine misfiring or stalling after water, or a soaked foam element.
- Clutch slip from the wrong engine oil (Honda) (Easy, 1 hour): Engine revs rise but the quad does not pull, especially on hills or with a trailer; slip got worse after an oil change or an oil additive.
- Electric shift (ES / ESP) will not change gear (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Pressing the shift buttons does nothing, gear changes are missed, the gear display flashes or goes blank, or the fault came on after washing or wading.
- Brake fluid change and brake hose replacement (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Dark fluid in the reservoir, spongy lever or pedal, hoses cracked or swollen, or no record of a fluid change in the last 2 years.
- CV boots and drive shafts (TRX350, TRX400FW, TRX500) (Hard, 2–3 hours per shaft): Torn boot with grease flung round the wheel arch, clicking on full lock, knock when taking up drive.
- Valve clearance check and adjustment (screw and lock nut rockers) (Moderate, 1.5–2.5 hours): Ticking from the top end, hard hot starting, loss of compression or power, or the check is due on the maintenance chart.
- Front and rear final gear oil leaks and seals (Honda) (Hard, 1 hour for oil; 3–6 hours for a seal): Oil weeping at a drive shaft, the propeller shaft joint or the rear axle; milky gear oil after wet work; whine or knock from a gear case.
- Winch will not pull, runs one way only, or runs weak (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Nothing happens at the switch, the winch only runs in or only out, motor hums but the drum does not turn, slow line speed, or the winch got soaked.
