Drawbar eye and ball hitch check

Hitch · every 40 hours

Horsch says check the hitch wear and fixings every 40 hours and lubricate the ball socket. Daily checks apply before each road journey.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1EP2 grease to DIN 51825 KP/2K-40. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Check the mounting screws of the drawbar eye and link arm hitch for tightness at 560 N·m.
  2. Check the ball and spherical cap for wear. The wear limit is reached when the gauge rests fully on the ball or goes into the cap. Replace worn parts (workshop job).
  3. On the ball coupling, adjust the hold-down so its gap to the ball is no more than 0.5 mm, secure it with bolts and split pins, and refit the protective cap.
  4. Replace the foam ring if damaged or heavily soiled, and grease the ball socket.
  5. On a lower link hitch, check the pin against the wear sizes in your handbook (Cat 2 28.7 mm new, 28.0 mm wear limit; Cat 3 36.6 / 35.9 mm; Cat 4 50.8 / 50.1 mm).

TurboDisc coulters: discs, bearings, preload, rubber mountings

Wear parts · every 40 hours

Horsch's maintenance overview lists the coulters and discs for regular checks and says check them for wear, play and free turning. The discs sit slightly angled with a preload set by washers. As the discs wear, preload falls, so fit new discs and then take out washers to restore it.

Coulter mounting rubbers1Replace if aged or the coulter has lost tension. Check your handbook for the numbercheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the machine, stop the tractor and make it safe.
  2. Spin each disc by hand. It must turn freely with no roughness, play or damage.
  3. Check disc wear and the preload washers. Do not set the preload too high on wet or loose soil: the discs can block and wear unevenly.
  4. When fitting new discs, remove shims in left and right pairs under the disc bearing to bring the preload back.
  5. Tighten the disc bearing screws to 130–150 N·m and the disc screws (6 × M8) to 38 N·m.
  6. Replace the rubber mountings and coulters if they are aged or have lost tension.

Grease to the lubrication chart

Lubrication · every 50 hours

Horsch's lubrication chart lists the folding cylinder, filling auger, seed bar lift cylinder, lift shaft and coulter pressure spindle, fertiliser coulter, bout marker pivot, swinging drawbar and tractor link arm hitch. The intervals on the chart are 50 hours, with one daily entry; the copy I could read did not show which point is which, so grease all of them at 50 hours and check your handbook for the daily one. Grease again after every pressure wash.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1EP2 grease to DIN 51825 KP/2K-40. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the machine, stop the tractor, take the key out and secure the machine against moving.
  2. Wipe each grease nipple clean, then grease the folding cylinder, filling auger, seed bar lift cylinder, lift shaft and coulter pressure spindle, fertiliser coulter, bout marker pivot, swinging drawbar and tractor link arm hitch. Some points are fitted on both sides of the machine (marked 2x).
  3. Use the chart in your handbook for the exact number of points on your width.
  4. Wipe off excess grease. Do not use a high-pressure washer on bearings.

Retighten bolts and wheel nuts

Frame · every 50 hours

Horsch says retighten all screw and hydraulic connections after the first 10 hours or 50 km, again after the next 10 hours or 50 km, then daily until nothing moves, then before each season and every 50 hours. Wheel nuts are M18 × 1.5 at 300 N·m or M22 × 1.5 at 510 N·m.

Step-by-step
  1. Park on firm level ground and lower the machine. Never work under a raised machine unless it is mechanically supported.
  2. Retighten all screwed and plug-in connections, the hydraulic connections, and the frame and connecting parts to the torque table in your handbook.
  3. Tighten wheel nuts to 300 N·m (M18 × 1.5) or 510 N·m (M22 × 1.5), whichever your axle uses.
  4. Check the fan impeller drive flange for tightness at the first 50 hours.

Tools: Torque wrench, Socket set

Metering unit: sealing lip, rotor and bearings

Seed metering · every year

Horsch says the metering unit needs no special routine servicing, but the sealing lip must be replaced at least once a year and checked for wear. Dressing dust can wreck the side cover bearings, which are the main wear point.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Side cover bearings2Keep spares; replace before they fail. No genuine number found: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. After the season, empty the hopper and open the fall sluice so any water can run out.
  2. Clean the cell wheel with a brush and compressed air. Do not use a pressure washer on the metering unit.
  3. Check the rotor runs true and that no cells stick. Check the sealing lip's condition and setting.
  4. Turn the drive motor and bearings by hand to check for roughness, and run a function test.
  5. Replace the sealing lip each year.

Tools: Brush, Compressed air, Screwdrivers

Calibration test (each seed or fertiliser change)

Seed metering · every year

Horsch says calibrate with the machine lowered and parked, using the E-Manager. Do it for each seed or fertiliser change and for each metering unit on a twin hopper.

Step-by-step
  1. Do not use seed with sticky dressing: it upsets the metering. Check the hopper for foreign objects.
  2. Fit the rotor and rape brushes (or the coarse-seed adapter frame, deflector and wide sealing lip) to suit the seed. Remove the accessories for grain and fertiliser.
  3. Fill the hopper, open the flap under the metering unit and clear the fall sluice and pipes.
  4. Hang the calibration bag on the rails and run the calibration from the E-Manager.
  5. Close the flap and check it is sealed. Repeat for the second metering unit if you have twin hoppers.

Tools: Calibration bag or tray, Scales, E-Manager terminal

Hydraulics, hoses, tyres and air brakes

Hydraulics · every year

Horsch says replace hydraulic hoses 6 years after the date stamped on them, earlier in harsh conditions, and have the hydraulic system checked by an expert at least once a year. The brake line filters are cleaned at least yearly.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Hydraulic hoses1Replace at 6 years or if damaged. Check your handbook for the numberscheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Check all hydraulic lines for leaks, chafing and fixing. Never feel for a leak with your hand.
  2. Replace any hose over 6 years old (hose and crimp sleeve are stamped with the date).
  3. Check the packer tyre pressure: 4.25 bar for 7.50-16 AS packer tyres, 2.80 bar for the optional front packer (185/65-15 AS).
  4. Check the brake lines and hoses for damage, drain the air reservoir, clean the line filters and check the coupling heads for wear.
  5. Have the pressure accumulator and hydraulics checked by an expert once a year.

Tools: Tyre gauge, Rags

End-of-season cleaning and lay-up

Storage · every year

Horsch says clean thoroughly at the end of the season, empty the seed and fertiliser hoppers, relieve the coulter rubbers, protect the machine from rust with biodegradable oil, and store the terminal dry.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Penetrating oil1For the DiscSystem bearings after cleaningcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park under a roof if possible. Empty and clean the seed and fertiliser hoppers and blow out the coulters, seed lines, metering unit and fan with compressed air.
  2. Wash the outside with plain water. Keep jets away from electrics, the fan, cylinders and bearings. Open the fall sluice. Clean off fertiliser well, as it corrodes quickly.
  3. Spray the DiscSystem bearings with penetrating oil after cleaning, then turn the discs by hand to check they spin freely.
  4. Wind the coulter pressure down and park in the working position to take the load off the rubbers. Open the clearing valve.
  5. Take the load off the wheels, spray the hydraulic cylinder rods with corrosion protection, and do not spray plastic or rubber with oil.
  6. Unplug the terminal and keep it dry. Grease all points.

Known problems

Sticky seed dressing

Seed with sticky dressing upsets metering accuracy and can block the metering unit.

Dust in the metering unit

Horsch says dressing dust damages the side cover bearings, which are the main wear point. Keep the hopper lid shut while drilling.

Over-high coulter pressure

Too much coulter pressure can lift the machine out of the ground. Set all cranks the same and check the depth in the field.

Fertiliser corrosion

Fertilisers are aggressive: rinse the fertiliser parts thoroughly after use.

Intervals not mapped

The maintenance chart in the copy I read did not show which interval belongs to which row; the 40 h and 50 h figures here follow the ones in the text. Check your handbook's table.
