Brake band assembly1From the 357 XP parts list537043001
Step-by-step
  1. Wear approved PPE: helmet, hearing protection, eye protection, gloves, trousers and boots with saw protection.
  2. Monthly, engine off: brush dust and resin off the brake and clutch drum and measure the brake band. Replace it under 0.6 mm.
  3. Check the front hand guard for cracks and that it moves freely and is firmly anchored to the clutch cover.
  4. Inertia check, engine off: rest the saw on a stump, let go of the front handle and let it fall by its own weight. The brake must apply when the bar hits the stump.
  5. Running check: start the saw on firm ground with the chain clear, grip both handles, apply full throttle and tilt your left wrist onto the hand guard. The chain must stop immediately. Do not let go of the front handle.
  6. If the saw fails any check, take it to your service workshop.

Tools: Chainsaw PPE (helmet, visor or glasses, ear defenders, saw gloves, saw trousers, saw boots), Brush, Vernier calliper

Guide bar: turn, clean, deburr and grease the nose

Cutting attachment · every month

Husqvarna's schedule says turn the bar daily, keep the lubrication hole clear and the groove clean, lubricate a sprocket-tip bar, and file burrs off the bar edges weekly. The tip sprocket should be greased each time you refuel. The app counts in months.

  3. Monthly: empty and clean the inside of the fuel tank and the oil tank.

Tools: Screwdriver or combination spanner

Muffler and spark arrestor mesh clean

Engine · every month

Husqvarna's schedule says clean or replace the spark arrestor mesh weekly on mufflers that have one. A blocked mesh overheats the engine and damages the cylinder and piston. The app counts in months; Husqvarna's figure is weekly.

PartQtyNotesPart number

  3. File from the inside of each cutter outwards; keep all cutters the same length.
  4. Every third sharpening, check and file the depth gauges to 0.65 mm (0.025 in) with the depth gauge tool and a flat file.
  5. Replace the chain when the cutting teeth are worn down to 4 mm.
  6. Tension the chain so it is snug but still pulls round by hand.

Tools: Round file 4.8 mm (H25, H30) or 5.5 mm (H42), Flat file, Gloves

Carburettor adjustment (owner limits)

Fuel · when needed

The 357 XP has L (low speed), H (high speed) and T (idle) screws. Husqvarna says the owner may set idle with T and adjust L. Fine adjustment, especially H, should be done by a qualified person with a tachometer. On carburettors with limiter caps, H can move at most half a turn. Recommended idle 2,700 rpm; maximum fast idle 14,000 rpm must not be exceeded.

Step-by-step
  1. Clean the air filter and fit the cylinder cover first; adjusting with a dirty filter makes the mixture too lean later.
  2. Warm the engine for 10 minutes with the bar pointing away from you and clear of the ground.
  3. If the chain turns at idle, turn T anticlockwise until it stops. To set idle: turn T clockwise until the chain starts to turn, then anticlockwise until it stops.
  4. L: turn clockwise to its stop; if acceleration or idle is poor, turn it anticlockwise until it accelerates and idles well.
  5. Leave H to a qualified mechanic with a tachometer. Never force L or H past their stops; a too-lean H damages the piston and cylinder.
  6. If you cannot stop the chain turning at idle, do not use the saw: contact your dealer.

Tools: Small screwdriver, Tachometer (dealer), Chainsaw PPE
