| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brake band assembly | 1 | From the 550 XP Mark II parts catalogue; fit if under 0.6 mm | 505199502 |
Step-by-step
- Wear approved PPE: helmet, hearing protection, protective glasses or visor, gloves, trousers and boots with saw protection (boots with steel toe-cap and non-slip sole). Keep a first-aid kit with you.
- Monthly, engine off: remove the clutch cover and brush wood dust, resin and dirt off the brake and clutch drum. Measure the brake band; replace it if it is under 0.6 mm at the thinnest point.
- Check the front hand guard has no cracks, moves freely and is firmly attached to the clutch cover.
- Inertia check, engine off: hold the saw over a stump with both hands, let go of the front handle and let the bar tip fall against the stump. The brake must engage.
- Running check: start the saw with the chain clear of the ground, hold it firmly, apply full throttle and tilt your left wrist against the hand guard. The chain must stop at once. Do not let go of the front handle.
- TrioBrake models: check the rear brake trigger moves freely and is undamaged; never carry the saw by it.
- If the brake fails any check, speak to your Husqvarna servicing dealer before using the saw.
Tools: Chainsaw PPE (helmet, visor or glasses, ear defenders, saw gloves, saw trousers, saw boots), Brush, Vernier calliper

Step-by-step
- Daily check: run at three-quarter throttle with the bar about 20 cm above a light surface. After 1 minute you should see a clear line of oil.
- If not, check the bar oil hole and groove; see a dealer if that does not cure it.
- Oil flow: engine off. Turn the pump screw clockwise for less oil, anticlockwise for more. Husqvarna recommends medium flow for 38-46 cm bars and maximum flow for 50-71 cm bars.

Known problems
Run-in
Husqvarna says do not use full throttle without load for long periods during the first 10 hours.
Chain oil viscosity
Oil that is too thin runs out before the fuel, and below 0°C some oils become too thick and can damage the pump.
Repair guides
- Running in a new saw (or one with a new piston and cylinder) (Easy, First 10 hours of use): New or freshly rebuilt saw; worry about scoring the piston, or a saw that seems short of power for its first few tanks.
- Catalytic muffler and spark arrestor mesh: blocked mesh, overheating and carbon monoxide (Easy, 20 minutes): Saw losing power and running hot, mesh black with carbon, muffler loose or cracked, headache or dizziness when working in a hollow or confined spot.
- 550 XP Mark II won't start: purge bulb, choke, flooding and AutoTune (Easy, 30–60 minutes): Will not fire, fires once and stops, starts then dies, wet plug, or poor running after a change of fuel.
- Starter rope or recoil spring replacement (Moderate, 30–45 minutes): Rope frayed or broken, rope will not rewind, starter slips without turning the engine, or the starter pawls are blocked.
- Rim sprocket, clutch drum and clutch spring replacement; brake band check (Moderate, 30 minutes (rim and bearing); 1–2 hours (clutch)): Worn rim sprocket, chain jumping or wearing fast, chain turns at idle, clutch slips or rattles, dry or noisy needle bearing, or a chain brake that is slow to stop the chain.
- Chain oiler not oiling, or oil too thin or too thick (Moderate, 30–60 minutes): No oil line on a light surface after a minute at three-quarter throttle, chain oil running out before the fuel, chain dry in frosty weather, or the bar tip sprocket jammed.
- Guide bar rail dressing, groove cleaning and wear check (Easy, 20–30 minutes): Saw cuts crooked, burrs or a lip on the bar rails, chain leaning over, rails worn unevenly, chain drive links touching the bottom of the groove, or a hollow under the bar tip.
- Vibration damping units: check and replace (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Handles vibrate more than they used to, numb or tingling fingers, handle unit loose against the engine, cracked or deformed damping units.
- Fuel filter and fuel hose replacement (Moderate, 20 minutes (filter); 1 hour (hose)): Starts but stops again, runs out of power at full throttle, purge bulb will not fill, fuel smell or leak at the tank, cracked or hard hose.
