Known problems

Hy-Tran only in the transmission

IH says only Hy-Tran may go in the transmission, final drives and hydraulics. Other oils can give poor performance from the brakes, hydraulics and transmission.

Transmission level must drop on start-up

The handbook says the dipstick level should fall once the engine starts. If it stays the same, stop the engine and get it checked.

Do not clean the air cleaner element

IH says renew the element; do not clean it. Check the dust unloader lips every 200 hours.

Never turn the engine with no fuel

The injection pump is lubricated by fuel, so do not crank with an empty fuel system.
