Service jobs and parts

Greasing: 50-hour points

Chassis · every 50 hours

JCB splits greasing into 50-hour and 500-hour points, shown on the greasing diagrams: boom and chassis pivot pins, front and rear axle points, carriage lock pins, and extension ram pivots. This interval is with JCB HP Grease. If you use JCB MPL grease, JCB says do the 50-hour greasing every 10 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1EP2 grease. JCB HP Grease or JCB Special MPL-EP Grease, NLGI 2. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park level, fully retract and lower the boom with the attachment on the ground, parking brake on, engine stopped and key out.
  2. If any point can only be reached with the boom raised, fit the JCB boom safety strut over the lift ram before going near it. Never stand under a raised boom without it.
  3. Wipe each nipple clean and grease the points your handbook diagram marks as 50-hour until fresh grease shows. The manual's greasing sections cover pivot pins, front and rear axle, carriage lock pins, fork pivot pins, extension ram pivots, drive shafts and steer axle pivots, but our copy did not show which belong to the 50-hour or the 500-hour group.
  4. Wipe off surplus grease so it does not collect grit.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags

Hydraulic oil filter change

Hydraulics · every 250 hours or every 3 months

JCB's service schedule (manual 9803/3600) changes the hydraulic filter every 250 hours (monthly column), more often than the hydraulic oil (1,000 hours). Do it with the oil change too.

  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully into the tray.
  4. Clean around the filter head, unscrew the old filter and check its seal has come off with it.
  5. Smear clean oil on the new filter seal and fit it by hand. Do not over-tighten.
  6. Refit the sump plug, fill to the full mark on the dipstick, run for a minute, check for leaks, stop, wait a few minutes and recheck the level.

  3. Test the brakes at low speed in a safe place before work.

Tools: Bleed tube and jar, Ring spanner, Rags

Coolant change

Cooling · when needed

JCB's service schedule in manual 9803/3600 (pages 2-1 and 2-2, read in full) lists checking coolant level and condition at every service from 10 hours to 2,000 hours, cleaning the radiator from 500 hours and checking hoses, but gives no timed coolant change. Change it if the check shows weak or dirty coolant, or as your handbook says.

Known problems

Brake fluid type

The brakes use JCB Light Hydraulic Fluid ISO VG15. Topping up with DOT brake fluid damages the seals and the brake pack.

Boom wear pads and main pivot

Rock the extending section for side play. Unshimmed pads can lead to cracking around the main boom pivot pin; front pads usually wear first and shims are cheap.

Carriage and pin wear

Lift the carriage, tilt it to about 45 degrees and check the pins and bushes for wear or cracks. Pick-up pins wear with heavy use.

Axle kingpins and steering bushes

Lift each end and check the kingpins and rear axle centre pivot for play. Steering bushes are often neglected and wear fast.

Transmission

Check all forward and reverse gears engage cleanly and ask for service history. A transmission rebuild on a Loadall can cost £5,000 or more.
