Engine oil filter1No number found; check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park on firm level ground. Fully retract and lower the boom with the forks or attachment flat on the ground. Parking brake on, engine stopped, key out.
  2. Let the engine cool for about 10 minutes. Wear gloves.
  3. Drain the sump, change the filter (seal oiled, hand tight) and refit the plug.
  4. Fill to the dipstick mark, run for a minute, check for leaks, then recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (15 L), Filter wrench, Socket for sump plug, Funnel, Gloves

Fuel filter change and water drain

Fuel · when needed

  3. Never work under a raised boom unless the boom safety strut is fitted.
  4. Drain the tank, change the filter, clean any suction strainer, refill, then run every service through its travel and recheck the level with the boom down.

Tools: Large containers, Spanners, Pump, Gloves

Transmission oil and filter change

Known problems

Boom wear pads and main pivot

Rock the extending section for side play. Unshimmed pads can lead to cracking around the main pivot pin.

Pins and bushes

Tilt the carriage to about 45 degrees and check the pins and bushes for wear or cracks.

Axle kingpins and steering bushes

Lift each end and check for play; steering bushes are often neglected.

Transmission

Check all gears engage both ways and ask for service history; rebuilds are expensive.

Model naming

The 526-55 was later renamed 526, and a later 526 (from serial 1182000) uses the JCB 444 engine. Check your serial plate before ordering parts.
