PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1Type: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park level, lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Wipe each nipple clean, then grease the points on the handbook's diagram: propshafts, suspension and steering joints.
  3. Wipe off surplus grease so dirt does not stick.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 500 hours or every 6 months

Eurol's guide, built from the maker's data, gives the engine oil every 500 hours or 6 months, with a first change at 100 hours and a level check every 10 hours. The filter goes on with the oil every time.

Step-by-step
  1. Park on firm level ground, lower the linkage and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand for a few minutes so the oil is warm but not scalding. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Clean around the filter head, unscrew the old filter and make sure its seal has come off with it.
  5. Oil the new filter seal and fit it by hand as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the sump plug with a new washer and fill with about 21 L of the oil your handbook specifies, to the full mark.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it, wait a few minutes and recheck the dipstick.
  8. Take the old oil to a proper disposal point.

Tools: Drain tray (30 L), Filter wrench, Socket for sump plug, Funnel, Rags, Gloves

Hub reduction oil change (four hubs)

Axles · every 500 hours or every 6 months

Eurol's guide gives the hub reductions, front and rear, every 500 hours or 6 months, with a first change at 100 hours and a level check every 100 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Engine fuel filter change

Fuel · every 1,000 hours or every year

A parts dealer's listing of JCB's 1000-hour kit for the 4220 shows an engine fuel filter in it, so 1,000 hours is used here. No handbook page was read, so check your handbook for the interval and for any pre-filter or water separator. Common-rail injectors are easily damaged by dirt and water.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Engine fuel filter1A reseller lists this JCB number for the Fastrac 4160, 4190, 4220, 8250, 8330 and 3230. Confirm by serial number320/07416
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around the filter head so no dirt can get in.
  3. Drain the filter into a container and remove it.
  4. Fit the new filter with a lightly oiled seal.
  5. Prime the fuel system as the handbook describes. Never crack open high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
  6. Start the engine, let it idle and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves

Engine air filter elements

Engine · every 1,000 hours or every year

The same dealer listing of the 4220's 1000-hour kit shows a main (outer) air filter, so 1,000 hours or a year is used. Change it sooner in dusty work. Check your handbook for the safety element.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Outer (main) air filter element1No genuine number confirmed; check your handbook or ask a JCB dealer with your serial numbercheck your handbook
Inner (safety) air filter element1Check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run it with the element out.
  2. Open the air cleaner and take out the outer element. Leave the inner one in place unless you are changing it.
  3. Wipe out the housing with a damp cloth. Do not blow dirt into the intake.
  4. Fit the new element, check the seal sits evenly and close the housing.
  5. Squeeze the dust valve clear.

Tools: Torch, Damp cloth

Front and rear differential oil change

Axles · every 1,000 hours or every year

Eurol's guide gives both differentials every 1,000 hours or 12 months, with a first change at 100 hours and a level check every 500 hours or 6 months.

PartQtyNotesPart number

  2. Warm oil drains better but burns, so wear gloves. Drain the front differential, then the rear.
  3. Refit the drain plugs and fill each to its level plug.
  4. Wipe the housings clean and check for leaks after the next run.

Tools: Drain tray (25 L), Spanners or hex key for plugs, Oil pump

Hydraulic oil and filter change

Hydraulics · every 2,000 hours or every 2 years

Eurol's guide gives the hydraulic system oil every 2,000 hours or 24 months, with a level check every 10 hours. JCB's 1000-hour kit for the 4220 lists a hydraulic return filter; change the filter with the oil every time, and also at 1,000 hours if your handbook says so.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Hydraulic return filter element1No genuine number confirmed; check your handbook or ask a JCB dealer with your serial numbercheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park on firm level ground, lower the linkage and implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. With the engine off, work the spool controls to let out trapped pressure. Oil at pressure can pierce skin.
  3. Put a large container under the tank drain. Stand to one side when you open it.
  4. Change the filter element with a new seal.
  5. Refit the plug and fill with the oil your handbook specifies. The wrong oil can damage the system.
  6. Start the engine, work the hydraulics through their full travel, lower everything, stop and recheck the level.

Tools: Container (140 L), Spanners, Filter wrench, Pump or funnel, Gloves, Lint-free rags

CVT (V-tronic) transmission oil and filter change

Transmission · every 2,000 hours or every 2 years

Eurol's guide gives the CVT transmission oil every 2,000 hours or 24 months, with a level check every 10 hours. JCB's 1000-hour kit for the 4220 includes a CVT transmission filter, so change the filter with the oil every time.

PartQtyNotesPart number
