Service jobs and parts

Grease front axle and MFWD shaft

Chassis · every 50 hours

The technical manual says grease the MFWD universal-jointed shaft and the front axle and its bearings every 50 hours, and every 10 hours in wet and muddy conditions.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Multipurpose grease1check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Wipe each nipple and grease the front axle pivot and bearings.
  3. On MFWD tractors, grease the universal joints on the front drive shaft.
  4. In wet, muddy work do this every 10 hours.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags

MFWD oil level check

Front axle · every 100 hours

The technical manual says check the MFWD axle oil level every 100 hours.

Step-by-step
  1. Park level, stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Remove the axle housing level plug; oil should reach the hole. Top up if needed.
  3. Turn the wheels so the hub plugs are in the level position and check each hub the same way.
  4. Refit the plugs.

Tools: Spanner for level plugs, Rags

Grease clutch release bearing

Clutch · every 100 hours

Where the tractor has a grease nipple for the clutch release (throw-out) bearing, the technical manual greases it every 100 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Find the release bearing grease nipple (only some tractors have one) and give it a small amount of grease. Too much can reach the clutch disc.

Tools: Grease gun

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 200 hours

The technical manual gives 200 hours for both the engine oil and the oil filter. Old oil loses its protection and lets soot wear the engine.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Engine oil1SAE 30 or 10W-20. 8.5 L with the filter; grade: check your handbook. Aztec Oils match: EMPROTEC SDX 30check your handbook
Engine oil filter1John Deere parts catalogue PC5054 (2040S/2140, built in Spain). Confirm for Mannheim-built tractorsT19044
Step-by-step
  1. Run the engine to working temperature, park on level ground, lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Remove the sump drain plug and let the hot oil drain fully. Wear gloves; it burns. Refit the plug.
  3. Clean around the filter, remove it and throw it away.
  4. Smear clean oil on the new filter's seal and fit it hand-tight.
  5. Refill with 8.5 L of oil and check the dipstick.
  6. Start the engine, check for leaks at the filter and plug, stop it, wait a few minutes and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (10 L), Spanner for sump plug, Filter wrench, Funnel, Rags, Gloves

Grease three-point hitch, front hitch and front PTO shaft

Linkage · every 200 hours

The technical manual greases the three-point hitch, front hitch and front PTO drive shaft every 200 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Multipurpose grease1check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the linkage, stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Grease the lift rod and top-link nipples on the three-point hitch.
  3. Where fitted, grease the front hitch and the front PTO drive shaft joints.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags

Transmission/hydraulic oil filter change

Hydraulics · every 500 hours

The technical manual changes the transmission/hydraulic filter every 500 hours, twice as often as the oil (1,000 hours). Dirt in this shared oil wears the piston pump, Hi-Lo and PTO clutches.

Known problems

Two transmission oil figures

The manual gives a larger initial fill (64 L or 52 L) and a smaller oil-change figure (56 L or 44 L) because some oil stays in the system. Fill to the dipstick, not by the bigger number.

Hydraulic filter twice per oil change

The transmission/hydraulic filter is due at 500 hours but the oil only at 1,000 hours, so the filter is easy to forget halfway.

Serial number splits

MFWD capacities change at tractor serial 450 000 L and the 540 PTO engine speed changes at 507 868 L. Check the plate on the right of the front axle carrier before ordering oil or parts.

Wet and muddy work

The manual cuts front axle, MFWD shaft and rear axle bearing greasing to every 10 hours in wet and muddy conditions.
