Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 200 hours or every year

John Deere's May 2021 sheet and April 2022 parts guide say replace the engine oil filter every 200 hours or once a year, whichever comes first. (The March 2021 sheet says 400 hours; the shorter figure is used here.) Change the oil with it.

Step-by-step
  1. Warm the engine, park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the filter, check the old seal came off, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the plug and fill with Plus-50 II to the full mark.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (10 L), Filter wrench, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel, Gloves, Rags

Fuel filters (primary and final)

Fuel · every 400 hours or every year

John Deere says replace both fuel filters every 400 hours or once a year, whichever comes first.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Primary fuel filter1MIU802421
Final fuel filter1MIU803127
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around both filters before opening anything.
  3. Drain any water from the primary filter into a container.
  4. Remove the old filters and fit the new ones with clean seals.
  5. Prime the system as your handbook describes. Never crack open the high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Gloves, Rags

Transmission and hydraulic filters

Transmission · every 400 hours

John Deere says replace the transmission oil filter initially after 400 hours and then every 1,200 hours or 3 years. The sheet gives no oil change interval, so this is a filter-only task.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Check your transmission and pump size, then order the right filters.
  2. Park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and implements fully, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  3. With the engine off, work the spool and linkage controls to relieve hydraulic pressure.
  4. Let hot oil cool before starting; it burns.
  5. Clean around each filter, remove it and catch the oil. Fit the new filters with oiled seals.
  6. Run the engine briefly, stop, check for leaks and top up with Hy-Gard.

Hydraulic oil filter

Hydraulics · every 400 hours

John Deere says replace this filter every 400 hours. The sheet and parts guide list LVA12726 (cab) and LVA12678 (MFWD) under the hydraulic heading, but one calls it a fuel filter, so check the part against your tractor with a dealer.

  1. Watch the display for exhaust filter warnings and let regenerations finish.
  2. If the warning stays on, book DPF replacement or cleaning with a John Deere dealer within 250 hours.

Tools: Dealer service tool

Coolant replacement

Cooling · when needed

Cool-Gard II protects against liner pitting, corrosion and frost but wears out. John Deere's sheet gives the quantity but not the interval, so check your handbook and test the coolant every year.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Only work on a cold engine; the cooling system is under pressure when hot.
  2. Drain the system from the radiator and engine drain points into a clean tray.
  3. Flush with clean water, refit the drains and refill with the correct Cool-Gard II mix.
  4. Run the engine up to temperature, let it cool and top up the level.

Known problems

Oil filter interval differs by sheet

Deere's March 2021 sheet says 400 hours; the May 2021 sheet and April 2022 parts guide say 200 hours. The shorter figure is used.

3033R and 3039R differ

The 3033R has a different DPF (MIU803093) and extra filters (front PTO LVA23443, oil cooler hydraulic LVA12726). This entry is the 3046R.

Filter pak

John Deere sells one filter pak, LVA21038, that holds the oil filter, transmission filter, both fuel filters and the primary air filter (M806419, LVA13065, MIU803127, MIU802421, RE68048).

Filters on the hydraulic line

The 3R sheets label LVA12726 as a hydraulic or oil cooler filter in one place and a fuel filter in another. Confirm with a dealer.

Repair guides

The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your tractor.
