Step-by-step
  1. Warm the engine, park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the filter, check the old seal came off, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the plug and fill with Plus-50 II to the full mark.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (10 L), Filter wrench, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel, Gloves, Rags

Fuel filters (primary and final)

Fuel · every 400 hours or every year

John Deere says replace both fuel filters every 400 hours or once a year, whichever comes first.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Final fuel filter1MIU803127
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around both filters before opening anything.
  3. Drain any water from the primary filter into a container.
  4. Remove the old filters and fit the new ones with clean seals.
  5. Prime the system as your handbook describes. Never crack open the high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Gloves, Rags

Hydraulic oil filter

Hydraulics · every 400 hours

John Deere says replace the hydraulic oil filter every 400 hours. The sheet gives no oil change interval, so this is a filter-only task.

PartQtyNotesPart number

  1. Check your transmission and pump size, then order the right filters.
  2. Park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and implements fully, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  3. With the engine off, work the spool and linkage controls to relieve hydraulic pressure.
  4. Let hot oil cool before starting; it burns.
  5. Clean around each filter, remove it and catch the oil. Fit the new filters with oiled seals.
  6. Run the engine briefly, stop, check for leaks and top up with Hy-Gard.

Tools: Drain tray, Filter wrench, Gloves, Rags

Transmission and hydraulic filters

Transmission · every 400 hours

John Deere's wording is unclear: it says replace the transmission oil filter after every 400 hours, and change every 1,200 hours or 3 years. The shorter 400-hour filter figure is used here; ask a dealer which one applies to the oil.

  3. Flush with clean water, refit the drains and refill with the correct Cool-Gard II mix.
  4. Run the engine up to temperature, let it cool and top up the level.

Transmission filter wording

Deere's 4R sheets say 'replace after every 400 hours, change every 1,200 hours or 3 years'. It is not clear which applies to the filter and which to the oil. Check your handbook.

DPF depends on model

The 4052R is listed against both DPF numbers. Check your serial number.
