Service jobs and parts

Oil the drive chains

Drives · every 10 hours

The handbook says to oil the chains every 10 hours while they are still warm, so the oil soaks in.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Chain oil1SAE 30 or heavier engine oil (handbook: SAE 30 or heavier). Aztec Oils match: AGRITEC CHAINSAW 100XTcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and wait for everything to stop. Do not oil chains with the baler running.
  2. Straight after baling, while the chains are still warm, oil each drive chain generously.
  3. Let the baler stand a short while so the oil can soak in, then wipe off the drips.

Tools: Oil can, Rag

Grease pivots, tension arm and cylinder rods (10-hour points)

Chassis · every 10 hours

The handbook lists the tension arm and cylinder pivots at 10 hours (and the shear-bolt PTO shaft lubrication fitting after any shear-bolt failure).

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1EP grease. John Deere SD Polyurea preferred, or HD Lithium Complex (NLGI GC-LB)check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower and lock anything that could move, stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Grease the tension arm pivots and cylinder pivots on both sides (459). On the 469 / 569 the 10-hour list is the tension arm pivots, tension cylinder rods and the push bar shock absorber and spring bolt, if fitted.
  3. Pivot points must be greased again after every high-pressure wash.

Tools: Grease gun, Rag

Grease the 30-hour points and PTO shaft

Chassis · every 30 hours

The handbook lists the pickup lift crank, twine arms, pickup drive idler, pickup idler arm, bellcrank pivot and the PTO driveline fittings at 30 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1EP grease. John Deere SD Polyurea preferred, or HD Lithium Complex (NLGI GC-LB). PTO shaft: John Deere EP Moly High-Temperature Grease or equivalentcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lubricate the pickup lift crank thread with SAE 30 or heavier oil, or with EP Moly grease.
  2. Grease the twine arm hub and pivots (keep your hands out of the twine arm path), the pickup drive idler pivot, the pickup idler arm and the pickup lift bellcrank pivot. Wipe crop build-up off the twine actuator rod first.
  3. Slip-clutch PTO shaft (459): pumps per fitting are 5, 5, 30, 5, 5, 5 and 10 as marked A to G on the diagram on the shield. 469 / 569 PTO shaft: all fittings are on the 30-hour interval, with 5, 5, 30, 5, 5 and 10 pumps (A to F). Follow the diagram on your shaft.
  4. On balers with the Cover-Edge net wrap counterknife, grease the counterknife arm pivot lightly. Over-greasing gets grease on the rubber roll and causes net wrapping on the roll.

Tools: Grease gun, Oil can, Rag

Change gear case oil after the first 50 hours

Gear case · every 50 hours

The handbook says to drain and refill the gear case after the first 50 hours of a new baler, then once a season.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Gear case oil185W-140. Gear oil API GL-5, SAE 85-140 (John Deere GL-5 Gear Lubricant), 1.2 Lcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Drain the oil from the drain plug under the gear case.
  2. Refill to the dipstick: the oil must fall between the grooves. 1.2 L is the capacity. Do not overfill because it overheats and leaks.
  3. Tighten the dipstick to 29 ± 3 N·m.

Tools: Drain tray, Spanner for drain plug, Torque wrench

Check gear case oil level

Gear case · every 100 hours

The handbook lists the dipstick check in the 100-hour list. Top up with the same grade.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Park level and wait a few minutes for the oil to settle.
  2. Pull the dipstick: the oil must be between the grooves. Top up with SAE 85-140 API GL-5 gear oil if low.
  3. Do not overfill. Tighten the dipstick to 29 ± 3 N·m.

Tools: Rag

Gear case oil change, wheel bearings and gearbox output U-joint

Gear case · every year

The handbook's annual list: drain and refill the gear case, remove the wheels and repack the bearings, and grease the gearbox output shaft U-joint (annually or every 250 hours).

PartQtyNotesPart number

Wheel bearing grease1EP multipurpose grease (John Deere EP Moly or equivalent SAE multipurpose grease, or wheel bearing grease)check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Drain and refill the gear case with 1.2 L of SAE 85-140 API GL-5 gear oil. Check the level on the dipstick and tighten it to 29 ± 3 N·m.
  2. Support the baler on stands, remove the wheels, then clean, repack and adjust the wheel bearings with EP Moly or wheel bearing grease. Refit the wheels.
  3. Tighten the wheel nuts: 115 N·m (459) or 237 N·m (469 / 569). Check them again after one hour and after the first 10 hours.
  4. Grease the gearbox output shaft U-joint fitting (annually or every 250 hours).
  5. On balers with the Cover-Edge net wrap actuator, oil the actuator rod end and base end mounting pins with SAE 30 or heavier oil (469 / 569 annual list).

Tools: Drain tray, Axle stands, Wheel brace and torque wrench, Grease gun, Bearing puller

Check belt pins and tension arm wear channels

Belts · every year

The handbook gives these by bale count: belt pins every 1,000 bales (459) or 2,000 bales (469 / 569), halved in sandy conditions; wear channel groove depth every 5,000 bales (2,500 in sand). A yearly prompt is used because the app counts hours, not bales.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Belt pins1Replace if the plastic covering is worn. Check your handbook or parts book for the numbercheck your handbook
Wear channels1Replace if the groove is deeper than 3 mm. Check your handbook or parts book for the numbercheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Raise the gate fully and engage the gate lock before working under or around it.
  2. Check the belt lacing pins for wear or breakage. Replace pins if the plastic covering is worn.
  3. Check the wear channels and tension arm for groove depth. If the groove is deeper than 3 mm (1/8 in), repair or replace the channels and the tension arm (see your dealer).
  4. Excess grooves wear the belt edges and can wear through the tension arm.

Tools: Gate lock (use it), Rule or depth gauge, Hand tools

Start of season check

General · every year

The handbook's start-of-season list for the baler.

Step-by-step
  1. Check the gear case oil is up to the dipstick level.
  2. Take the heavy storage oil off the chains and oil them with SAE 30 or heavier oil.
  3. Grease the whole machine. This forces any moisture out of the bearings.
  4. Check the tyre pressures (459: 207 kPa, 469 / 569: 103 kPa).

Tools: Grease gun, Oil can, Tyre gauge, Torque wrench

End of season storage

General · every year

The handbook's storage list.

Step-by-step
  1. Store in a dry place. If it must stay outside, cover or remove the belts to keep sunlight off them.
  2. Take the twine out of the boxes and store it indoors. Clean the baler inside and out.
  3. Oil all pivots and linkages. Grease the whole baler. Retract all the hydraulic cylinders.
  4. Wash the chains with diesel, dry them and coat them in heavy oil. Paint worn areas.
  5. Put blocks under the frame to take the weight off the tyres. Do not let the tyres down.

Tools: Pressure washer (keep away from bearings), Oil can, Grease gun, Blocks

Replace the PTO shaft shear bolt (if fitted)

Driveline · when needed

Only when it shears. Shear bolts are made to break under a set load, so use the right grade. A shear-bolt PTO shaft is not on every baler (some have a slip clutch).

PartQtyNotesPart number

Known problems

Gear case overfilled

The handbook warns that overfilling the gear case overheats it and makes it leak. Keep the oil between the grooves of the dipstick.

Bearing fires

Chaff and crop build up round the roll bearings and slip clutch. The handbook says to clear it at the end of each use and not to pressure-wash close to bearings.
