Service jobs and parts
Greasing: front axle, king pins, hitch, rear axle
Chassis · every 50 hours
The manual puts the front axle pivot pins and king pins/spindles at 50 hours (10 hours only in very wet, muddy work), the lift links at 250 hours and the rear axle bearings at 600 hours.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multipurpose EP grease | 1 | John Deere high-temperature EP non-clay grease, or SAE multipurpose high-temperature grease with EP | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Front axle: give the MFWD front and rear pivot fittings several shots (and the adjustable axle pivots if fitted).
- Grease the steering king pins, top and bottom (MFWD), or the spindles (adjustable axle).
- Every 250 hours: grease the left and right lift links.
- Every 600 hours: grease the rear axle fittings, both sides.
- In very wet and muddy work, also grease the tie rod ends daily; do not over-grease because it can damage seals.

Engine oil and filter change
Engine · every 250 hours or every year
The manual says change the engine oil and filter after the first 100 hours, then every 250 hours and at least once a year; every 125 hours if the diesel has over 0.7% sulphur. Deere's sheet shows 375 hours for the 5420/5520 with Plus-50 oil; that is the extended figure, so 250 hours is used here.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 1 | Plus-50 diesel engine oil (viscosity by air temperature: check your handbook). 8.5 L with filter. Aztec Oils match: AGRITEC SUTO 10W-30 | check your handbook |
| Engine oil filter | 1 | Deere filter sheet, Jun 2021: T19044 on the 5220 and 5320, RE59754 on the 5420 and 5520. One filter per tractor | T19044 (5220, 5320) or RE59754 (5420, 5520) |
Step-by-step
- Run the engine to warm the oil, then stop it. Park on level ground, apply the park brake, lower the linkage and any implement to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Remove the drain plug and drain the oil into the tray.
- Remove the oil filter. Wipe a film of oil on the new filter's seal and fit it hand-tight plus half a turn.
- Refit the drain plug and fill with seasonal-grade oil to the full mark on the dipstick (about 8.5 L).
- Start the engine, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level. Take the old oil to a proper disposal point.

Known problems
Fuel prime and starting
TractorByNet owners of 5220–5520 tractors report the fuel system sometimes loses its prime and the engine will not start; fixes discussed include a new check valve (RE503242 quoted for a 5420), an in-line prime bulb or an electric lift pump. Anecdotal; ask your dealer for the service bulletin.
Hydraulic filter interval
Deere's 2021 sheet says 1,200 hours for the transmission/hydraulic filter on the 5020 series, but the manual and the 5010 sheet say 250. Check your handbook.
Repair guides
- Engine loses its prime or will not start: fuel filter, air leaks and the check valve (5010, 5020) (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Engine will not start after standing or after a filter change, cranks and fires then dies, or has to be primed every time.
- Weak hydraulics or slow lift: transmission and hydraulic filter (5010, 5020) (Easy, 1 hour): Hydraulic lift slow, loader slow, noisy hydraulics.
- Overheating or loss of power: air filters and coolant conditioner (5010, 5020) (Easy, 45 minutes): Engine runs hot, coolant temperature warning, black smoke, low power.
The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your tractor.
