Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 250 hours or every year

A UK John Deere dealer gives the oil filter interval as first 100 hours, then every 250 hours or once a year, extendable to 500 hours with Plus-50 II oil. Deere's North American 5E sheet says the same. The Stage IIIB/V sheet's wording ('every 375 hours, every 500 hours') is muddled, so the 250-hour figure is used.

Step-by-step
  1. Warm the engine, then park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and implements to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the oil filter, check the old seal came off, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the drain plug and fill with Plus-50 II to the full mark.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (10 L), Filter wrench, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel, Rags, Gloves

Engine air filter elements

Engine · every 250 hours or every year

Deere's Stage IIIB/V sheet says change the primary and secondary air filters every 250 hours or once a year. In dusty work check them more often.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Primary air filter1SU29300
Secondary (safety) air filter1SU29301
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine with the filter out.
  2. Open the housing and take out the primary element, then the secondary.
  3. Wipe the housing out with a damp cloth. Do not blow dirt down the intake.
  4. Fit the new elements, check they seat evenly and close the housing.

Tools: Torch, Damp cloth

Fuel filter change

Fuel · every 250 hours

Deere's Stage IIIB/V sheet says 'replace every 250 hours, every 500 hours'. The North American and Stage II 5E sheets say every 500 hours. The shorter figure on the UK-type sheet is used; check your handbook.

  3. Drain any water from the filter into a container.
  4. Remove the old filter and fit the new one with a clean seal.
  5. Bleed the fuel system as your handbook describes.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves

Transmission and hydraulic oil filter

Transmission · every 500 hours

Deere's Stage IIIB/V sheet says replace the hydraulic oil filter after the first 100 hours, then 'every 500 hours and every 1,200 hours'. The North American sheet says 'every 250 hours and every 1,200 hours', and the Stage II sheet 'after every 1,200 hours'. The 500-hour figure from the UK-type sheet is used; check your handbook.

  4. Fit the new filter with an oiled seal, hand-tight.
  5. Start the engine, run it briefly, stop it and top up Hy-Gard to the correct level. Check for leaks.

Cab fresh air and recirculation filters (cab models)

Transmission and hydraulic oil change

Known problems

Muddled interval wording

Deere's own Stage IIIB/V sheet gives two figures for several filters. Until you have the operator's manual for your serial number, use the shorter one.

Several oil and fuel filter numbers

The 5E sheets list more than one oil filter (RE519626, DZ114256) and fuel filter (R536698, DZ114096) for the same models. Check your serial number with a dealer.

Older 5E models differ

The earlier 5055E and 5065E, and North American 5045E–5075E, use other air and fuel filters (RE282286/RE282287, RE60021). This entry covers the Stage IIIB/V 5050E–5075E.
