Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 300 hours or every year

John Deere's table shows the oil filter replaced after the first 100 hours and then in both the 300-hour and 500-hour columns. 300 hours is used here; check your handbook to see whether 500 hours applies to your oil. The oil is always changed with its filter.

Step-by-step
  1. Warm the engine, then park on firm level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the filter, check the old seal came off with it, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Smear a little clean oil on the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the sump plug and fill with the right oil to the full mark on the dipstick.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (20 L), Filter wrench, Spanner or socket for sump plug, Funnel, Gloves, Rags

Fuel filters

Fuel · every 500 hours

John Deere says replace the fuel filters every 500 hours. The primary and secondary filter numbers depend on whether the tractor is iT4 or FT4.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around the filters before opening anything.
  3. Drain any water from the filter bowl into a container.
  4. Remove the old filter(s) and fit new ones with clean, lightly oiled seals.
  5. Bleed air from the system as your handbook describes. Never slacken high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Gloves, Rags

Cab air filters

Cab · every 600 hours or every year

John Deere's table shows the cab air filter replaced at 600 hours and annually.
