Service jobs and parts

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 250 hours or every year

John Deere says change the oil filter after the first 100 hours and then every 250 hours. If your diesel has more than 0.7 percent sulphur, halve that. The oil is always changed with its filter.

Step-by-step
  1. Warm the engine, then park on firm level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the filter, check the old seal came off with it, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Smear a little clean oil on the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the sump plug and fill with the right oil to the full mark on the dipstick.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (20 L), Filter wrench, Spanner or socket for sump plug, Funnel, Gloves, Rags

Cab air filters

Cab · every 250 hours or every year

John Deere says clean the cab fresh-air and recirculation filters every 250 hours and annually, and change them as required. The activated carbon filter is replaced every 250 hours.

  2. Open the filter covers and take out the elements, wearing a dust mask.
  3. Tap or blow clean filters from the clean side, or fit new ones if the sheet says replace.
  4. Refit them the right way round and check the covers seal.

Tools: Screwdriver, Dust mask

Fuel filters

Fuel · every 250 hours

John Deere says replace the final fuel filter every 500 hours on cab models and every 250 hours on open-station models. The sheet gives no interval for the primary filter, so change it with the final filter. The shorter 250-hour figure is used here.

  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around the filters before opening anything.
  3. Drain any water from the filter bowl into a container.
  4. Remove the old filter(s) and fit new ones with clean, lightly oiled seals.
  5. Bleed air from the system as your handbook describes. Never slacken high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Gloves, Rags

Hydraulic and transmission filters

Transmission · every 500 hours

John Deere says replace the hydraulic filter after the first 100 hours and then every 500 hours, and the transmission filter after the first 100 hours and then every 500 hours. The sheet's heading for RE45864 reads 'hydraulic fuel filter', so check which filter on your tractor it is.

  2. With the engine off, work the hydraulic levers to relieve pressure. Let hot oil cool before you start; it burns.
  3. Clean around each filter, remove it and catch the oil.
  4. Fit the new filter(s) with lightly oiled seals.
  5. Run the engine briefly, stop, check for leaks and top up with Hy-Gard to the mark.

Tools: Drain tray, Filter wrench, Gloves, Rags

DEF injection pump (5090E)

Exhaust · every 500 hours

John Deere says replace the DEF (AdBlue) injection pump on the 5090E every 500 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Book this with a John Deere dealer; it needs the DEF system depressurised and the pump matched to the tractor.
  2. Keep DEF containers clean and use only DEF to the right standard.

Tools: Dealer service tool

Engine air filters, primary and secondary

Engine · every 1,000 hours or every year

John Deere says replace the primary and secondary air filters every 1,000 hours or annually, whichever comes first, and change them as required.

  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine with the filter out.
  2. Open the housing and take out the element. Do not let dirt fall into the intake.
  3. Wipe the housing out with a damp cloth. Do not blow dirt down the intake.
  4. Fit the new element, check it seats evenly and close the housing.

Tools: Torch, Damp cloth

Transmission and hydraulic oil and filter change

Transmission · when needed

John Deere's sheet gives the quantities but no oil change interval, so check your handbook. The filters are always changed with the oil.

  3. Let hot oil cool for a while, then drain it from the transmission drain plug(s).
  4. Refit the plugs and fit the new filter(s).
  5. Fill with Hy-Gard, run the engine, work the hydraulics through their full travel, lower everything and recheck the level.

Tools: Large drain tray (70 L), Spanners, Filter wrench, Pump or funnel, Gloves

Front axle and hub oil change (MFWD)

Front axle · when needed

The front axle has its own Hy-Gard in the housing and hubs. The sheet gives the quantities but no interval, so check your handbook.

  3. Drain the axle housing and both hubs.
  4. Refit the plugs and fill the housing and each hub to its level plug with Hy-Gard.

Tools: Drain tray, Spanners, Oil pump or squeeze bottle

Coolant replacement

Cooling · when needed

Cool-Gard II wears out. John Deere's sheet gives ≈10.8 L but no interval, so check your handbook and test the coolant every year.

  2. Drain the system from the radiator and engine drain points into a clean tray.
  3. Flush with clean water, refit the drains and refill with the right Cool-Gard mix.
  4. Run the engine up to temperature, let it cool and top up the level.

Which filter is RE45864

John Deere's sheet puts RE45864 under a 'hydraulic fuel filter' heading. The 5000-series sheet lists the same number as the hydraulic oil filter, so it is treated that way here. Check against the filter on your tractor.

Final fuel filter

250 hours for open-station tractors, 500 hours for cabs.
