Service jobs and parts

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 500 hours

John Deere says change the oil filter after the first 100 hours, then every 500 hours when Plus-50 II oil and a genuine John Deere filter are used. The sheets do not give the shorter interval for other oil, so check your handbook for it. Change the oil with the filter.

Step-by-step
  1. Warm the engine, park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the filter, check the old seal came off, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the plug and fill with Plus-50 II to the full mark.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Fuel filters (primary and final)

Fuel · every 500 hours

John Deere says replace the primary and final fuel filters every 500 hours.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around both filters before opening anything.
  3. Drain any water from the primary filter into a container.
  4. Remove the old filters and fit the new ones with clean seals.
  5. Prime the system as your handbook describes. Never crack open the high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Gloves, Rags

Cab fresh-air and recirculation filters (clean)

Cab · every 600 hours or every year

John Deere says clean the cab filters every 600 hours, annually, and as required. Replace them when they will not come clean.

Tools: Screwdriver, Dust mask

Transmission and hydraulic filter

Transmission · every 600 hours

John Deere says replace the hydraulic filter after 100 hours and then every 600 hours. The sheet gives no oil change interval, so this is a filter-only task.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Check your transmission and pump size, then order the right filters.
  2. Park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and implements fully, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  3. With the engine off, work the spool and linkage controls to relieve hydraulic pressure.
  4. Let hot oil cool before starting; it burns.
  5. Clean around each filter, remove it and catch the oil. Fit the new filters with oiled seals.
  6. Run the engine briefly, stop, check for leaks and top up with Hy-Gard.

Tools: Drain tray, Filter wrench, Gloves, Rags

Engine air filter, secondary (safety) element

Engine · every 1,200 hours

John Deere says service the secondary air filter every 1,200 hours or as required.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Remove the primary element, then the secondary element, without letting dirt fall into the intake.
  3. Fit the new secondary element straight away, then refit or renew the primary.
  4. Close the housing and check the clips.

Tools: Torch, Damp cloth

Crankcase ventilation (OCV) filter

Engine · every 1,500 hours or every 3 years

John Deere's March 2022 guide says replace the crankcase vent filter every 1,500 hours. The April 2021 sheet says service every 600 hours and replace after the first 3 years or 3,000 hours. The shorter 1,500-hour figure is used here.

  3. Fit the new element with its seal and refit the cover.
  4. Run the engine and check for oil leaks around the housing.

Tools: Spanners or screwdriver, Rags

Engine air filter, primary (outer) element

Engine · when needed

John Deere's April 2021 sheet lists the primary air filter but gives its interval only under the secondary filter heading (service every 1,200 hours or as required). Check your handbook for the primary interval.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine with the filter out.
  2. Open the housing and take out the primary element. Leave the secondary element in place.
  3. Wipe the housing out with a damp cloth. Do not blow dirt down the intake.
  4. Fit the new element, check it seats evenly and close the housing.

Tools: Torch, Damp cloth

Transmission and hydraulic oil and filter change

Transmission · when needed

John Deere's sheets give the oil quantity but not the oil change interval, and disagree on the quantity (53 L or 39.5 L), so check your handbook. The filter is always changed with the oil.

  3. Let hot oil cool for a while, then drain it from the drain plugs.
  4. Refit the plugs and fit the new filters.
  5. Fill with Hy-Gard, run the engine, work the hydraulics through their full travel, lower everything and recheck the level.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF): dealer service

Exhaust · when needed

The 5M has a DPF. John Deere says see your dealer for service; the sheet gives no hour interval.

Step-by-step
  1. Watch the display for exhaust filter warnings and let regenerations finish.
  2. If the warning stays on, book DPF replacement or cleaning with a John Deere dealer within 250 hours.
  3. Never work near the exhaust until it has cooled; it runs very hot, especially after a regeneration.

Tools: Dealer service tool

Front axle and final drive oil change

Front axle · when needed

The front axle has its own Hy-Gard in the housing and wheel hubs. John Deere's sheet gives the quantities but not the interval, so check your handbook.

  3. Drain the housing and both final drives.
  4. Refit the drain plugs and fill each to its level plug with Hy-Gard.

Tools: Drain tray, Spanners, Oil pump or squeeze bottle

Coolant replacement

Cooling · when needed

Cool-Gard II protects against liner pitting, corrosion and frost but wears out. John Deere's sheet gives the quantity but not the interval, so check your handbook and test the coolant every year.

Step-by-step
  1. Only work on a cold engine; the cooling system is under pressure when hot.
  2. Drain the system from the radiator and engine drain points into a clean tray.
  3. Flush with clean water, refit the drains and refill with the correct Cool-Gard II mix.
  4. Run the engine up to temperature, let it cool and top up the level.
