Cab activated carbon filter (where fitted)
Cab · every 250 hours
Carbon filters protect the driver when spraying. John Deere says replace after every 250 hours.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Activated carbon filter | 1 | From serial KK552301 Deere also lists SJ14010 (fresh-air carbon) and SJ14011 (recirculated carbon) | SJ14288 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine and take the key out.
- Remove the carbon filter, wearing gloves and a mask as it may hold spray residue.
- Bag the old filter and dispose of it as chemical waste.
- Fit the new filter and check the cover seals.
Tools: Screwdriver, Dust mask, Gloves
Engine oil and filter change
Engine · every 500 hours
John Deere's 5R Stage IIIB sheets give 500 hours for the oil filter, with the extended interval allowed when a genuine John Deere filter is used. Oil and filter are changed together. Deere's sheets for other models halve this to 250 hours unless Plus-50 II and a genuine filter are used, so check your handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 1 | 15W-40 (10W-30, 5W-40 or 0W-40 in colder weather). Plus-50 II, ≈11.6 L with filter. Aztec Oils match: EMPROTEC EHPD 15W-40 | check your handbook |
| Engine oil filter | 1 | RE504836 |
Step-by-step
- Warm the engine, then park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
- Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
- Remove the filter, check the old seal came off, and wipe the filter head clean.
- Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
- Refit the plug and fill with Plus-50 II to the full mark.
- Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.
Tools: Drain tray (15 L), Filter wrench, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel, Rags, Gloves
Fuel filters (primary and final)
Fuel · every 500 hours
John Deere says replace both fuel filters every 500 hours. Clean fuel matters on a common-rail engine; drain water from the primary filter whenever it shows.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary fuel filter | 1 | RE546394 also listed from serial KK552301 | RE546336 |
| Final (secondary) fuel filter | 1 | RE544391 also listed from serial KK552301 | RE544394 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
- Clean around both filters before opening anything.
- Drain any water from the primary filter into a container.
- Remove the old filters and fit the new ones with clean seals.
- Prime the system as your handbook describes. Never crack open the high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
- Start the engine and check for leaks.
Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves
Transmission/hydraulic filter (open-centre tractors)
Hydraulics · every 600 hours
On open-centre tractors John Deere says replace the transmission/hydraulic filter after the first 100 hours and then every 600 hours. This is more often than the oil itself is changed, so it is a filter-only task.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transmission/hydraulic filter, open centre | 1 | Earlier sheet lists SJ11784; RE577612 from model year 2020 and serial KK552301 | RE577612 |

Tools: Large drain tray (60 L), Spanners, Filter wrench, Pump or funnel, Gloves
Exhaust after-treatment (DPF / AdBlue pump): dealer service
Exhaust · when needed
John Deere says see your dealer for these. The earlier 5R Stage IIIB sheet lists an AdBlue (DEF) injection pump; the sheet from serial KK552301 lists a diesel particulate filter. Check which your tractor has.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diesel particulate filter (serial KK552301 on) | 1 | Dealer service | RE568454 |
| DEF (AdBlue) injection pump (earlier tractors) | 1 | Dealer service; DZ114640 from model year 2020 | RE554498 |
Step-by-step
- Book this with a John Deere dealer; the sheets do not give an owner procedure.
- If the tractor uses AdBlue, keep the tank topped up with clean AdBlue only and keep the cap shut.
- Never work near the exhaust or DPF until it has cooled; it runs very hot, especially after a regeneration.
Tools: Dealer service tool
Front axle and hub oil change (MFWD)

Known problems
Parts change at serial KK552301
John Deere has two filter sheets for the 5R Stage IIIB, split at serial KK552301, with different fuel, hydraulic, carbon and after-treatment parts. Check your serial number before ordering.
AdBlue or DPF: check which yours has
The earlier sheet lists an AdBlue injection pump and the later one a DPF. A buyer's guide flags the AdBlue dosing module and tank as costly parts to check.
Powershift shifting
A buyer's guide says check the CommandQuad powershift for poor shifting; reconditioning the powershift pack is expensive.
Loader brackets and front axle
Check the front-loader mounting brackets for cracks and the front axle for oil leaks, especially on loader tractors.
Injectors and turbo
The PowerTech engine is generally sound, but check the injectors and turbo on high-hour tractors.
Repair guides
- DPF (exhaust filter) warnings: owner checks (Specialist, 30–60 minutes plus the cleaning cycle): Exhaust filter warning lamp, a request for parked cleaning, reduced power, cleaning that keeps stopping or repeats very often.
- AdBlue (DEF) warnings: owner checks (Specialist, 30–60 minutes): AdBlue level or quality warning, a dosing system fault, reduced power or speed limit, white crystals round the AdBlue tank or dosing parts.
- CommandQuad / Command8 powershift faults: owner checks (Specialist, 1–2 hours for owner checks): Poor, slow or harsh shifting between powershift steps, a gear that slips, no drive in one direction, or transmission codes.
- Front loader brackets: checking for cracks (Moderate, 1 hour to inspect): Cracks in paint or metal round the loader mounting brackets, loose bracket bolts, knocks when the loader is worked, loader sitting out of line.
- MFWD front axle: hub and kingpin seal leaks (Hard, 3–5 hours per hub): Oil on the inside of the front wheel or round the kingpins, low hub oil, knocking from the kingpins, or the suspended axle sitting low.
- Thermostat and water pump (5R 4.5 L PowerTech) (Moderate, 1–2 hours for the thermostat; 3–4 hours for the pump): Overheating, slow warm-up, coolant weeping from the pump, a noisy pump bearing or a squealing belt.
- Rear hitch or spool valves weak or slow (Moderate, 1–2 hours for checks): Hitch lifts slowly or will not lift a load, spool valves weak, steering heavy at the same time, pump noise, milky oil.
- Common-rail injectors, fuel priming and turbo checks (Specialist, 1–2 hours for checks and filters): Hard starting, misfire, rough idle, black or white smoke, loss of power, fuel in the oil, turbo whistle or oil around the turbo.
- Rear PTO won't engage, slips or won't stop (Moderate, 1–2 hours for checks; internal repairs are much longer): PTO does not turn when switched on, engages slowly or slips under load, keeps turning when switched off, or oil leaks round the PTO shaft.
- Cab air conditioning not cooling: owner checks (Moderate, 1 hour for owner checks): Air con blows warm, cools only at high revs, compressor clutch clicks in and out, weak airflow, musty smell, or water dripping in the cab.
- Starter and alternator: no crank, slow crank or not charging (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Click but no crank, slow cranking, nothing at all when the key is turned, battery warning light on, flat batteries, or a whining alternator.
The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your tractor.
