Tools: Compressed air (low pressure), Damp lint-free cloth

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 450 hours

John Deere says replace the oil filter initially after 300 hours on the 5225 and 5325, or 100 hours on the 5425, 5525 and 5625, and that the interval can be extended to 450 hours with John Deere Plus-50 oil and a genuine John Deere filter. The sheet states no shorter figure, so check your handbook for ordinary oil. The oil is always changed with its filter.

  1. Warm the engine, then park on firm level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the filter, check the old seal came off with it, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Smear a little clean oil on the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the sump plug and fill with the right oil to the full mark on the dipstick.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (20 L), Filter wrench, Spanner or socket for sump plug, Funnel, Gloves, Rags

Hydraulic filter

Transmission · every 600 hours

John Deere says replace the hydraulic oil filter initially after 100 hours and after every 600 hours. The sheet gives no oil change interval, so this is a filter-only task.

  4. Fit the new filter with a lightly oiled seal.
  5. Run the engine briefly, stop, check for leaks and top up with Hy-Gard to the mark.
