Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 250 hours or every year

John Deere says replace the oil filter after the first 100 hours and then every 250 hours. If your diesel has more than 0.7 percent sulphur, halve that. The oil is always changed with its filter.

Step-by-step
  1. Warm the engine, then park on firm level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the filter, check the old seal came off with it, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Smear a little clean oil on the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the sump plug and fill with the right oil to the full mark on the dipstick.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (20 L), Filter wrench, Spanner or socket for sump plug, Funnel, Gloves, Rags

Fuel filters

Fuel · every 250 hours

John Deere says replace the final fuel filter every 250 hours.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around the filters before opening anything.
  3. Drain any water from the filter bowl into a container.
  4. Remove the old filter(s) and fit new ones with clean, lightly oiled seals.
  5. Bleed air from the system as your handbook describes. Never slacken high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Gloves, Rags

Hydraulic oil filter

Transmission · every 500 hours

John Deere says replace the hydraulic filter after the first 100 hours and then every 500 hours. The sheet gives no oil change interval, so this is a filter-only task.

  3. Clean around each filter, remove it and catch the oil.
  4. Fit the new filter(s) with lightly oiled seals.
  5. Run the engine briefly, stop, check for leaks and top up with Hy-Gard to the mark.

Tools: Drain tray, Filter wrench, Gloves, Rags

Engine air filters, primary and secondary

Engine · every 1,000 hours or every year

John Deere says clean the air filters as required and change them every 1,000 hours or annually, whichever comes first, or after six cleanings of the primary element.

  4. Fit the new element, check it seats evenly and close the housing.
