Service jobs and parts

Grease the rolls and pickup (10-hour points)

Chassis · every 10 hours

The handbook says to grease the roll nipples after each working day while the bearings are still warm, along with the Powerline shaft and rotary feeder pickup (balers without the extended greasing interval).

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1EP multipurpose grease. John Deere GREASE-GARDcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and wait for everything to stop.
  2. Grease every roll bearing nipple (568 and 578 each have their own list in the handbook diagram), straight after work while the bearings are warm.
  3. Grease the Powerline shaft and the rotary feeder pickup nipples. If you have the extended greasing interval Powerline, grease it every 50 hours instead and give it a full service every 250 hours or yearly.

Tools: Grease gun, Rag

Oil the pickup drum drive chain (balers without the automatic oiler)

Drives · every 10 hours

Balers without the automatic chain oiling system need the pickup drum drive chain oiled every 10 hours. Balers with Multiluber oil from the reservoir do not.

Chain oil1SAE 30 or heavier oil. Aztec Oils match: AGRITEC CHAINSAW 100XTcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Do not lubricate a chain with the baler running.
  2. Remove the shield. Oil the chain generously straight after work while it is still warm, so the oil penetrates.
  3. Refit the shield.

Tools: Oil can, Spanner for the shield

Grease the 30-hour points

Chassis · every 30 hours

The handbook lists the standard net tying device and single arm twine tying, the double arm twine tying and the gauge wheel at 30 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Keep your hands out of the twine arm path.
  2. Grease the net tying device pivots (standard net tying or single arm twine tying), or the twine arm and link pins (double arm twine tying).
  3. Grease the pickup gauge wheel.

Tools: Grease gun, Rag

Check the hydraulic hoses

Hydraulics · every 100 hours or every month

The handbook says check every 100 hours or monthly, whichever comes first, and more often in rough conditions. It recommends replacing the hoses every 6 years.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Hydraulic hoses1Replace every 6 years. Check your handbook or parts book for the numberscheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Relieve the pressure and look over every hose for rubbing, cuts and leaks. Use cardboard, never your fingers, to find a leak.
  2. Replace damaged hoses. Replace all hoses every 6 years.

Tools: Piece of cardboard (to find leaks, never your hand), Safety glasses

Check gear case oil level

Gear case · every year

The handbook says to check the level every 1,000 bales. The app counts hours, so use this as a yearly prompt and look at it more often in a busy season.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Park level. Undo the level plug: the oil should be up to the bore of the plug.
  2. Top up through the refill plug if low. Do not overfill because it overheats and leaks.

Tools: Spanner for the level plug

Change the gear case oil

Gear case · every year

The handbook says drain and refill every 4,000 bales or yearly, whichever comes first.

Step-by-step
  1. Drain the oil while it is hot, straight after work. Pull out the refill plug and the drain plug and drain into a tray.
  2. Clean the drain plug and refit it. Add 1.7 L of oil: this is the amount that comes up to the level plug bore.
  3. Refit the plugs. The breather on top must be clear.

Tools: Drain tray, Spanner

Grease the net tying device (yearly or by bales)

Net wrap · every year

Standard net tying device: idler pivots, cylinder pins and net box brake pivots every 2,000 bales or yearly. The Cover-Edge net tying device is greased every 1,000 bales (two lists in the handbook for serial numbers up to 78999 and from 80000).

  3. Grease the bale shape indicator Bowden cables and the baler tongue as shown in the handbook.

Tools: Axle stands, Wheel brace and torque wrench, Grease gun

Step-by-step
  1. Check the gear case oil up to the check plug level.
  2. Take the oil off the chains and lubricate the complete machine, which forces any moisture out of the bearings.
  3. Check the tyre pressures, tighten all bolts, nuts and set screws and check the baler settings.
  4. Wipe the net feed rolls clean. Never use solvent on rubber feed rolls. Check the net knife is sharp.

Tools: Grease gun, Oil can, Tyre gauge

Top up the Multiluber chain oil reservoir
