Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 500 hours

John Deere says replace the oil filter initially after 100 hours. If Plus-50 II oil and a genuine John Deere filter are used the interval is every 500 hours. The sheet gives no figure for ordinary oil, so check your handbook for that. The oil is always changed with its filter.

Step-by-step
  1. Warm the engine, then park on firm level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the filter, check the old seal came off with it, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Smear a little clean oil on the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the sump plug and fill with the right oil to the full mark on the dipstick.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (20 L), Filter wrench, Spanner or socket for sump plug, Funnel, Gloves, Rags

Fuel filters

Fuel · every 500 hours

John Deere says replace the fuel filters every 500 hours. The 5085M to 5115M have a pre-filter and a final filter; the 5075M has one fuel filter.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around the filters before opening anything.
  3. Drain any water from the filter bowl into a container.
  4. Remove the old filter(s) and fit new ones with clean, lightly oiled seals.
  5. Bleed air from the system as your handbook describes. Never slacken high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Gloves, Rags

Cab air filters

Cab · every 600 hours or every year

John Deere says clean the recirculation and fresh-air filters every 600 hours or annually and as conditions require. Two of each are fitted.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Recirculation air filter2RE195491
Fresh air filter2RE198488
Step-by-step
  1. Switch the blower off and open the filter covers.
  2. Take the filters out. Tap them gently or blow clean from the inside with low-pressure air; never wash paper elements.
  3. Replace any that are damp, oily or torn, and refit the covers.

Tools: Compressed air (low pressure), Damp lint-free cloth

Transmission and hydraulic filter

Transmission · every 600 hours

John Deere says replace the hydraulic oil filter after the first 100 hours, then at 600 hours, then at 1,200-hour intervals. The task uses 600 hours for the second change; after that it is every 1,200 hours. The sheet gives no oil change interval, so this is a filter-only task.

Step-by-step
  1. Park on firm level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. With the engine off, work the hydraulic levers to relieve pressure. Let hot oil cool before you start; it burns.
  3. Clean around the filter, remove it and catch the oil.
  4. Fit the new filter with a lightly oiled seal.
  5. Run the engine briefly, stop, check for leaks and top up with Hy-Gard to the mark.

Tools: Drain tray, Filter wrench, Gloves, Rags

John Deere says service the primary and secondary air filters after every 1,200 hours or annually as required by conditions.
