Service jobs and parts

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 500 hours or every year

Deere's 6R FT4 sheet says change the oil and filter every 500 hours or once a year. The 500-hour interval only applies with Plus-50 II oil, a genuine filter and diesel under 15 ppm sulphur; otherwise change every 250 hours.

Step-by-step
  1. Warm the engine, then park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and implements to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil and the exhaust after-treatment burn, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the oil filter, check the old seal came off, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the drain plug and fill with Plus-50 II to the full mark.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (20 L), Filter wrench, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel, Rags, Gloves

Cab activated carbon kit (where fitted)

Cab · every 500 hours or every year

Carbon filters protect the driver when spraying. Deere says never clean them, and replace every 500 hours or 1 year, or with the engine primary air filter, whichever comes first.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Open the cab filter covers and remove the carbon filters. Wear gloves and a mask; they may hold spray residue.
  3. Bag the old filters and dispose of them as chemical waste.
  4. Fit the new filters and check the covers seal.

Tools: Screwdriver, Dust mask, Gloves

Fuel filters (primary and secondary)

Fuel · every 500 hours

Deere's sheet says replace both fuel filters every 500 hours. Common-rail injectors are easily damaged by dirt or water.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Primary fuel filter1DZ115389
Secondary fuel filter1DZ115390
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around both filters so dirt cannot get in.
  3. Drain any water from the primary filter into a container.
  4. Remove the old filters and fit the new ones with clean seals.
  5. Prime the system as your handbook describes. Never crack open the high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves

Transmission and hydraulic oil filters

Transmission · every 500 hours

Deere's sheet says change the transmission and hydraulic filters together after the first 100 hours, then every 500 hours. This is shorter than on the 6-cylinder 6R (750 hours).

  2. With the engine off, work the spool valve and linkage controls to relieve hydraulic pressure before opening anything.
  3. Let hot oil cool before starting; it burns.
  4. Clean around each filter, then remove both filters and catch the oil.
  5. Fit new filters with oiled seals, hand-tight.
  6. Start the engine, run it briefly, stop it and top up Hy-Gard to the correct level. Check both filters for leaks.

Tools: Drain tray, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves

Front PTO oil filter (where fitted)

PTO · every 500 hours

Deere's sheet lists a separate front PTO oil filter, replaced every 500 hours.

  3. Fit the new filter with an oiled seal, hand-tight.
  4. Run the front PTO briefly, stop, check for leaks and top up with Hy-Gard.

Tools: Drain tray, Filter wrench, Rags

Engine air filter elements

Engine · every 1,500 hours or every 2 years

Deere says replace the primary element every 1,500 hours or 2 years. The secondary element is replaced at every fourth primary change, or after 4,500 hours or 3 years, whichever comes first.

  2. Open the housing and take out the primary element.
  3. Only remove the secondary element when it is due; never clean it.
  4. Wipe the housing out with a damp cloth. Do not blow dirt down the intake.
  5. Fit the new element(s), check they seat evenly and close the housing.

Tools: Torch, Damp cloth

Crankcase ventilation (OCV) filter

Engine · every 1,500 hours or every 2 years

Deere's sheet says replace the open crankcase ventilation filter every 1,500 hours or 2 years. The number depends on whether the exhaust has a DOC only or a DOC with particulate filter.

  3. Clean around the filter housing, remove the old filter and fit the new one with a clean seal.
  4. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Spanners or filter wrench, Rags, Gloves

Cab fresh air and recirculation filters

  3. Wear a dust mask. Tap the filters out gently if cleaning, or fit new ones if due.
  4. Refit the covers and check they seal.

Tools: Screwdriver, Dust mask

Transmission and hydraulic oil change

Transmission · every 1,500 hours

John Deere's operator's manual (OMAL225926, 4-cylinder Final Tier 4 service list) says to replace the transmission and hydraulic oil and clean the intake screens in the 1500-hour service, repeated at every 1500 hours. Both the hydraulic and transmission oil filters are changed with the oil, and are also due at 100 hours (first change) and every 500 hours in between.

AdBlue (DEF) filter

Exhaust · every 4,500 hours or every 3 years

Deere's sheet lists a 'diesel exhaust filter' DZ114640, replaced every 4,500 hours or 3 years. The same number is the AdBlue line filter on the 6M sheet, so it is treated as the AdBlue filter here.

PartQtyNotesPart number
AdBlue (DEF) filter1DZ114640
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and wait for the AdBlue system to purge before working on it.
  2. Clean around the filter so dirt cannot get into the AdBlue system.
  3. Replace the filter as your handbook describes. AdBlue corrodes metals, so wipe up spills with water.
  4. Start the engine and check there are no warnings or leaks.

Tools: Spanners, Rags, Gloves

Coolant replacement

Cooling · every 6,000 hours or every 6 years

John Deere's operator's manual (OMAL225926) says replace the coolant and check the thermostat after 6 years or 6000 hours, whichever comes first, when Cool-Gard II is used. With Cool-Gard (the older type) it is 3 years or 3000 hours, and with another coolant 2 years or 2000 hours. Test the coolant with test strips every year.

  2. Drain the radiator and block into a tray. Dispose of old coolant properly.
  3. Refit the plugs and fill with Cool-Gard II.
  4. Run the engine to working temperature with the heater on, let it cool and top up.

Known problems

Shorter gearbox filter interval

On these 4-cylinder 6Rs the transmission and hydraulic filters are every 500 hours, not 750 as on the 6-cylinder 6R and the older 6030.

Two front axle types

The 2-piece (730/733/735) and 3-piece (M40 family) front axles take different amounts of oil. Check which you have before filling.

Earlier 6105R–6125R differ

The Interim Tier 4 6105R, 6115R and 6125R use different fuel filters (RE546336 and RE544394), a DPF (RE551147) and 750-hour gearbox filters. Check your serial number.

Six-cylinder 6Rs

The 6145R–6215R have their own entry (6155R).
