Service jobs and parts

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 500 hours or every year

John Deere says change the oil and filter after the first 100 hours, then every 500 hours or once a year. The 500-hour interval only applies with Plus-50 II oil, a genuine John Deere filter and diesel with less than 15 ppm sulphur; otherwise change every 250 hours.

Engine oil filter1RE539279
Step-by-step
  1. Warm the engine, park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the filter, check the old seal came off, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the plug and fill with Plus-50 II to the full mark.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (30 L), Filter wrench, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel, Gloves, Rags

Fuel filters (primary and final)

Fuel · every 500 hours

John Deere says replace both fuel filters every 500 hours. Clean fuel matters on a common-rail engine.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around both filters before opening anything.
  3. Drain any water from the primary filter bowl into a container.
  4. Remove the old filters and fit the new ones with clean seals.
  5. Prime the system as your handbook describes. Never crack open the high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves

Transmission and hydraulic filters

Transmission · every 750 hours

John Deere says replace the transmission oil filter and the hydraulic oil filter after the first 100 hours, then after the first 750 hours and every 750 hours, always as a pair. The sheet gives no oil change interval, so this is a filter-only task.

  1. Park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and implements fully, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. With the engine off, work the spool and linkage controls to relieve hydraulic pressure.
  3. Let hot oil cool before starting; it burns.
  4. Clean around each filter, remove it and catch the oil.
  5. Fit the new filters with oiled seals.
  6. Run the engine briefly, stop, check for leaks and top up with Hy-Gard.

Tools: Drain tray, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves

Engine air filter, primary (outer) element

Engine · every 1,500 hours or every 2 years

John Deere says replace the primary air filter every 1,500 hours or 2 years, whichever comes first, or when the restriction message shows on the display. Change the cab filters at the same time.

  2. Open the housing and take out the primary element. Leave the secondary element in place.
  3. Wipe the housing out with a damp cloth. Do not blow dirt down the intake.
  4. Fit the new element, check it seats evenly and close the housing.

Tools: Torch, Damp cloth

Crankcase ventilation filter

Engine · every 1,500 hours or every 2 years

The crankcase breather filter stops oil mist being blown out of the engine. John Deere says replace it every 1,500 hours or 2 years, whichever comes first.

Cab recirculation filters

Cab · every 1,500 hours or every 2 years

John Deere says replace the two cab recirculation filters every 1,500 hours or 2 years, whichever comes first, or with the primary air filter. The activated carbon kit is never cleaned and is replaced every 500 hours or yearly.

Cab fresh-air filters

Cab · every 1,500 hours or every 2 years

John Deere says replace both cab fresh-air filters every 1,500 hours or 2 years, whichever comes first, or with the primary air filter. Change them sooner in dusty work.

Engine air filter, secondary (safety) element

Engine · every 4,500 hours or every 5 years

John Deere says replace the secondary element at every fourth primary change, or after 4,500 hours or 5 years, whichever comes first.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Secondary air filter1AL215054
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Remove the primary element, then the secondary element, without letting dirt fall into the intake.
  3. Fit the new secondary element straight away, then refit or renew the primary.
  4. Close the housing and check the clips.

Tools: Torch, Damp cloth

Transmission and hydraulic oil and filter change

Transmission · when needed

John Deere's sheet gives the oil quantity but not the oil change interval, so check your handbook. Both filters are always changed with the oil.

  5. Fill with Hy-Gard, run the engine, work the hydraulics through their full travel, lower everything and recheck the level.

Tools: Large drain tray (100 L), Spanners, Filter wrench, Pump or funnel, Gloves

Diesel particulate filter (DPF)

Exhaust · when needed

John Deere says replace the diesel particulate filter within 250 hours after the exhaust filter and warning light show on the display. There is no hours interval, so it is on demand.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Diesel particulate filter1RE551148
Step-by-step
  1. Let regenerations finish when the display asks; do not switch off mid-regeneration unless you have to.
  2. When the exhaust filter and warning light show on the display, book the replacement with a John Deere dealer within 250 hours.
  3. Never work near the exhaust until it has cooled; it runs very hot, especially after a regeneration.

Tools: Dealer service tool

Front axle and final drive oil change

Front axle · when needed

The front axle has its own Hy-Gard in the housing and both final drives. John Deere's sheet gives the quantities but not the interval, so check your handbook.

  4. Refit the drain plugs and fill each to its level plug with Hy-Gard.

Tools: Drain tray, Spanners, Oil pump or squeeze bottle

Coolant replacement

Cooling · when needed

Cool-Gard II protects against liner pitting, corrosion and frost but wears out. John Deere's sheet gives the quantity but not the interval, so check your handbook and test the coolant every year.
